Why is UBI even talked about in the first place? Why is it even needed?
There's no jobs, everything is too expensive, and social mobility is quickly coming to a grinding halt. UBI isn't going to fix any of that in a real sense, it's just going to be a tiny little bandage that hopes to numb people to the real decay that is going on at the societal level. This isn't what we need.
What we need is a real and well functioning society again. Family units will give what is essentially UBI to their offspring as needed. Why are we letting the government take the role of the family? This is a recipe for disaster. And with UBI the pressure for immigration will become astronomical.
I can't quite put into words how bad things are going to be with UBI but honestly it feels apocalyptic.

UBI is lifetime welfare. If you're on a UBI, your income will be set by the state, unchanging, for your entire life. You will be unable to work to increase it. You will be set into your social and economic class for your entire life. It sets a permanent underclass of dependants on the government. How the fuck does anyone think that's a good thing?

If everyone gets a certain amount of money in an inflationary economy, doesn't that money essentially become worthless? UBI would have to keep rising over time in an exponential manner in order to hold the same purchasing power wouldn't it?

The government doesnt create wealth because it doesnt produce anything or generate economic activity of its own, it can only take wealth and then give it back (minus its administrative fees) to other people. Now, they CAN buy goods from the economy that does produce something generating economic activity right? Say, a desk. But how does it buy that desk? It takes money from lots of people and uses that money which they could otherwise use to buy goods of their own on their own, it limits THEIR economic activity in order to create it owns.

Meaning, no real economic activity is taking place that wouldn't have otherwise done so of its own as people work to earn compensation and then use that compensation to purchase things they want, they dont need the government to spend their money for them. Hell, considering it also takes admin costs to process all this, its basically taking money from people who generate economic activity, then giving some of that to a person to "work" and who is then instructed to spend the rest of it on other things for.. well.. themselves basically. Government itself is basically the ultimate welfare system unto itself. It goes out and takes money from everyone else, to buy things for itself and pay its people to do all this.

Now they can just print money, but as you pointed out, theres this thing called inflation. If we all traded in cheeseburgers for our "wages" and used cheeseburgers to purchase goods, BUT cheeseburger production was limited and thus they were less common, but then suddenly some place comes along and starts mass producing cheeseburgers of the same quality we trade with and starts giving them to everyone free of charge, its going to take far more cheeseburgers to purchase something because suddenly there are far more burgers out there, less rare, and thus far easier to come by so people will expect more for goods and more for their work effort. Driving down the value of burgers and up the number of burgers needed for an item. Paper money is literally no different. If suddenly EVERYONE in the USA was given $100k with no strings attached, prices would skyrocket as the dollar would be FAR more common suddenly, more people would have more to throw around, and vendors would ask for more of them (because of how common and less valuable they are now) for goods, it would drive up costs a great deal over night.

So what happens when you start putting this into context of UBI? Well, you have one of two options for how the government can do this. They can:

And then give this money to other people (minus admin costs). But this won't improve the overall quality of life in the USA. You'll simply be lowering some peoples wealth, while raising others, and you can only raise others by "nearly" the same rate at which you've lowered other peoples. Thus, you aren't adding any wealth to the system, you're just playing robin hood and hurting even middle income earners.

Well,but theres the ultra rich right? Just take their money. We've tried that, and we've also mathed it out, it doesnt work. There are videos from a few years back that explain even if you took everything the top 1% or even I think 10% HAVE (not earn, so we're talking all their wealth) you couldn't run the government at its current levels for an entire year. We've also taxed the shit out of people for awhile, and what happens? They leave and go to lower tax areas or nations. See: lots of exporting of jobs to china or india to pay lower wages and lower taxes.

So, in total, you're lowering the quality of life, to bump it back up by about the same amount. You aren't "helping" the nation improve here.

But hey you're helping PEOPLE right? Individuals who need income! Wrong again. People are best helped by having opportunities to help themselves, if all you're doing is giving them money for nothing, and you're not ADDING wealth to the system, well, you're not generating more economic activity than would have already existed to begin with, thus, no new opportunities are created. And so you'll have to KEEP giving them money.

Theres also the problem of people letting themselves fall below that UBI line in order to work less and still earn the same, or just stopping work completely. We've seen this in Seattle. People ASKING to work less so they can stay on government programs because the city raised the minimum wage. They would rather work less and earn the same overall. People will see this with UBI and bandwagon on that quickly. Why work when the government will give me money? Same money, more free time. Then you have the problem of to many takers and not enough payers. The system collapses as it doesnt have enough people earning enough to support everyone, and economic activity slows over time as more and more people STOP working and producing. Forcing government to milk even more from those who do work, encouraging them even more to STOP working.

So, you cannot simply tax and redistribute the money to allow for a UBI. It won't work. It will ultimately destroy the economic activity and prosperity of a region due to human nature.

So, you aren't going to tax people to pay for it, so how do you get the money? Simple, just create it, print it off and give it out. But this comes with a huge downside. If UBI were set at something somewhat low, say $500/mo. And lets assume a modest poverty rate of 14% (assuming this includes all unemployed people, though it doesnt, but it will make this easier)

So, thats roughly 45 million people. Obviously not all are adults, lets say just half of them are adults. So thats 22.5 million people.

To provide JUST those 22.5m people with UBI of $500/mo, would cost 11 and 1/4th billion dollars PER MONTH. Thats nearly $140 billion a year.

Now, imagine what would happen if suddenly over $11B per month were dumped into the economy. Thats about 550 MILLION pizzas worth $20 a piece, or about 28 million $400 tvs, or well into the billions of gallons of gasoline a month. ALL that is suddenly able to be bought for essentially nothing, no work put in to generate that gasoline or make those pizzas or build those tvs. Just all that money being dumped into the system for people to buy things with.

Well what is naturally going to happen? Simple, demand will go up while supply remains steady, that means prices go up. Theres also the fact that suddenly there are more dollars "out there" and decreases the value OF the dollar as a commodity or item of currency, which will also see prices rise.

So, now you've just caused prices to go up over night. So what happens next? Well, UBI isn't want it used to be (last month) it isnt "enough" anymore because prices have gone up, so UBI has to be increased. Which causes prices to go up, which causes UBI to need to be raised, and so on. This is called inflation, or hyper inflation if its bad enough.

So in order to simply "print money" to create a UBI, you've destroyed the economy. You've lowered the value of work more and more as UBI goes up, raised the value of goods, and all for what? No one is better off for it. The people on UBI arent any better off since now they cant buy those tvs or pizzas because they're even more expensive in a never ending cycle.

And we've established that taxing it out and redistrubting it doesnt work… so.. how else does the government provide UBI? It doesnt. It CANT. There is no method of doing this that does not ultimately destroy an economy.

Now I know what you're thinking, "but user, there have been stimulus spending efforts before, they even gave tax payers extra money back sometimes in the past and THAT didnt wreck everything!" Yes, you're right. But 1) those methods are ALWAYS a temporary thing, not long term. and 2) they HAVE caused prices to go up with them, albeit in the short term so you don't notice them for long and its been quite a while since we had something like that, so you won't be thinking about it. But yes, even THOSE things caused temporary inflation during a temporary "UBI" of sorts. Now imagine it being long term. How much damage it would do.

So no, there is never going to be a sustainable UBI because such a thing has to come from the government, and the government doesnt produce any wealth of its own, it can only tax or print, and neither method ends well. So it has no method of creating wealth for people who would be on UBI. The only way to truly get yourselves out of poverty and create a better life, is to work for it yourself. Thats it, end of story.

Yeah, not everyone can do that. Some people are just going to fail, some people are going to be so unlucky in life they will try and still fail, some people simply wont try. But there is NO WAY to solve this problem. Its just another part of being human. its best NOT to worry about those things. Help where you can, but do not ever expect someone else to earn your way for you, it just will not work.

Yes and no. While it is true we are supplementing the income of a great many people, effectively "giving" them money. What that money can be spent on is limited.

Something like section 8 for example, is basically giving money to people for homes, but its limited purely to housing and generally in bad areas to begin with, but which would otherwise likely be paid for by other low class occupants so the owner isnt making much extra really (especially when you consider the damage section 8 people do to those houses, its bad, and costs so much to fix). So it doesnt circulate easily into the wider economy in the end, its pretty limited.

Same can be said for most forms of welfare. The two major exceptions are social security disability which is basically just money for being disabled which a great many people take advantage of, and food stamps which itself is more on the level of section 8 housing BUT which people manipulate into getting money for other things.

The levels are limited though, so the impact is smaller. But you aren't wrong, it DOES have an impact. Food prices in general are higher simply because of food stamps in the first place, and this impacts everyone. And you'll notice, people are always campaigning to raise the level of food stamp money given out, or demanding it be done if they're on them. The cycle would just repeat though, prices go up, people complain and want more, lefty fucks campaign to raise rates, again and again.

But, theres also the fact that the impact of those things is spread across both forms of governments ability to give out money. Some is taxed out, some is printed out. It diminishes the impact on either front, but it still has an impact. And as you said, its becoming more noticable as time goes along.

There is some truth in that of course, but most food stamp recipients dont get THAT much in total. Welfare as it stands is unstable, but not explosive at any given moment, because the bulk of it is directed to certain "necessities" (food, water, shelter) and less of it is just direct free money (disability). Plus most of the people ON those welfare problems, in order to receive what they do, have basically piss all other money to actually spend on anything to begin with, food stamps and the like RAISE the quality of food they would be buying if they were doing it on their own budget. I just thought about this today. Internationally it may be a commie fantasy but here in Germany (and other nations that place emphasis on exporting products) I think there is another component: If you hand out money to everyone then everyone buys more shit and purchasing power of your currency goes way down. Suddenly prices for every day things increase, even multiply depending on how big the universal income is. So it can be used as a lever to weaken your own currency, just like adding a bunch of poor countries to your currency like we did by creating the EU and the Euro currency. They're expensive and limited in usefulness, but will help companies expand their productivity. The future of robotics will gradually shrink the initial costs and increase the scope of their labor. While large companies can still enjoy improvements in specialized machinery, garage-based businesses enjoy the reduction in cost and increase in scope to create many different things of value.

The garage economy is something that can't quite exist until automation exists on the small scale. Labor is one of the primary prohibitive expenses for small businesses, and automation makes that disappear in exchange for one-time expenses. There's still issues like materials, transportation, overhead, individual productivity, and so on. Most of these are minimized in small businesses but labor doesn't see significant reductions until you can expand to scales where automation is dominant. If you could mirror those same effects at small scales, you'd have a whole class of businesses that couldn't exist until now.

There are niches not being explored because of prohibitive labor costs. Things that could be produced for profit if they were on a national scale, but are not because of smaller demand, can be made available if the marginal cost is reduced. Think of the difference between a local restaurant and grocery store ZOGchow and apply that to everything. A whole new market emerges, and it's not just artisinal hipster bullshit. Think about how you supply goods to remote areas, or how you produce something for the needs of a small group of people. Endless possibilities.

There's a whole infrastructure for this that is dependent on automation as well. Transportation of raw materials to, and finished products from, homes and small offices/warehouses is a business in itself, and it stands to gain greatly from driverless vehicles.

There are two obstacles that can stop this - legal formalities and UBI. The former will eliminate the ability for one man to run a business and the latter will destroy his incentive to. I'd suggest opposition to both.

it is based on taxation, plain and simple and yes it involves redistribution of wealth in the same sense that taxation involves the redistribution of wealth

the point of UBI (how I see it at least), is simply to streamline the welfare system
it actually involves much less central planning than many current systems
just the same amount to everybody regardless of their income, and then tweaking the amount of taxes paid that for most people it will be net zero (you get UBI but your taxes are slightly higher as a result)

this will probably save money, if we assume a welfare system is in place
