The speed of battles would be an objective improvement, meaning running into a Zubat wouldn't turn into a 5 minute affair just trying to push the run button. Not to mention it visually looks better to have games running at 30 FPS or higher.
user I know the point your trying to make but FPS isn't on equal ground as 4 vs 8 direction movement. Like I said the way Game Freak implemented it there was no improvement that came with 8 directional movement. Exploring the region wasn't changed, the game was still effectively grid based, grass tiles were still tiled and not shaped, the only puzzles that involved 8 directional movement were the roller skate puzzles. Very few of the routes were diagonal or had diagonal movement central to them. Luminose was better navigated through 4 direction movement. Hoenn didn't change with OR/AS dramatically and they didn't add many new things to take advantage of 8 direction movement. It wasn't an improvement, it just was there. Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness had 8 directional movement too, and those games accounted for it by designing the world with it in mind. Now with Sun and Moon yes 8 directional movement is an improvement because they're actually designing the game world with it in mind and dynamic camera angles in mind.
