You don't need university to do cool things, if you want to be a sysadmin going to university is a waste of time.
You can be a programmer without going to university or you can learn CS without going to university.
The thing is can you put up learning everyday for couple of years ? If yes you should go to university if no you should choose something else than computers or find a comfy sysadmin job.
