I don't mean to be a complete newfag, but what did the warrant canary cover, and what specifically does this mean?

Basically it means that 4chan has been forced legally to hand over data as part of an investigation. When this happens, a website/business is legally barred from telling its users that their data is under investigation, so to get around this, they use a warrant canary which is a statement that they are not under investigation that is released at regular intervals

As soon as they stop releasing this regularly, you know they ARE under investigation and are legally unable to tell us so.
