I think my main problems right now deterring me can come down to 2 things

1.) Lack of motivation

2.) Lack of inspiration

How the fuck do you guys get motivated and/or inspired?

One thing I find helps motivate me is if I doodle a character, I'll give it a name, so the doodle becomes a bit more meaningful too me and I can try drawing it in different expressions and poses. I also feel like I send too much time and focus on actually drawing a fucking picture, so I end up doubting myself and go back to endlessly watching different tutorials that never helps

How did you niggers get started and what inspires and motivates you?

I just force myself to draw. If I'm having trouble with something, like say anatomy, I try to draw that thing 10-20 times on a couple of sheets of paper, as accurately as possible, and erasing if I have any mistakes.

I have the opposite problem. It's hard for me to even finish a sketch sometimes.

What really gets me in the mood for drawing is listening to podcats, or just someone talking while playing a game. Andrew Dobson's vlogs have surprisingly been good material to listen to while drawing, as well as for a laugh or two at him whining about people criticizing him.

On half/co/ (I went there for the kek and Holla Forumsco/'s Bizarre Adventure) there is an ongoing shitstorm on their drawthreads about the inclusion of OCs for requests, all originating from this OC character named Adelaide, which they eventually allowed (and deleting furry requests on caturday as usual).

What's full/co/'s stance on this? Let OCs into the drawthreads, or build a wall and let them stay in a dedicated OC thread? I would personally pick the former since allowing it would be the same as letting Syrian "refugees" in.

Is the drawfags' decision to make art out of the requests they like or want to deliver.

I've seen a lot of requests that are more suited for a commission, since they can range from drawing an autistic OC to porn or drawing several characters at once, but if any drawfag does it, why should anyone get salty? It's not like the one that complains lose his time doing it against his will.

Sure, you can make fun of the shitty OC or how autistic a request is, or argue that an artist should be compensated for his work mainly in such specific requests, but no one has control over others from what they should draw or not. Also, this is a drawthread, so yeah, draw whatever.

Tracing is a legitimate way to learn. Tracing and eyeballing are complementary. Don't neglect them. I like to study in steps. First I trace a figure, them I eyeball it. After that I do gestures and them construction. That way you internalize the pose.

Say, I was tracing over this cover of Judge Dredd, or to be specific, drawing it because I didn't have the original picture at that moment

It's okay to trace. A good ideia is to trace,for example, various Judge Dredd drawings, in various poses. Them try to draw him from imagination.

After you fail (hehe), try to see what was harder to remember. Like, if you find difficult to remember how his helmet looks, trace lots of drawings from his helmet. Then, draw from imagination again.

Tracing is only forgivable if used as a last resort when you are trying to figure out how figure is put together, but you hit the wall and can't get it right after multiple attempts.

You just roughly trace, and finish it up without tracing. Next, break object down to simple figures (or fill up muscles, draw skeleton, etc.) over traced image. Next, start drawing, but this time you start with simple figures you broke drawing down to and then gradually add more and more detail.
Otherwise you don't learn shit or even exercise your imagination.

She's a halfchan OC that someone made in an OC thread. Her design is really plain though; looks like the bastard child of Creepy Suzie and TT Jinx.

On April Fools day someone requested drawings of her doing stuff on a non-OC drawthread, and that request was fulfilled not by one but several artists, which naturally makes everyone else go apeshit. (The AF Google+ layout didn't help matters)

This went on well past over AF, turning every drawthread into a shitpost thread, before they caved in. She marked a turning point in the drawthreads where OC characters can be requested so long as they aren't furry.

Arts student here. I've only ever heard tracing encouraged on the internet by randoms. No art teacher I've ever had has encouraged it. Probably because trying to copy the same pictures without tracing will teach you to see and control much better than tracing will.
I mean if you max out how good you are at a technique hen you're 6, it's probably not doing you much good past then.

You have much room to improve, that's all I can say.

Since it's Mrs. Kat you could base her off of other peoples work. Not the base model. By that I mean, some other R34 of her. Also just turn her torso a bit to the right. It will work fine. I can bend like that. Then add any little details, like nipples, and her tail.
So put hand a bit more on hip to rest some of her weight, and have her somewhat turned to the right so she's looking back towards you. As that's where you were going with it. Here's some r34 of her.

If you're European, free school earned through a lifetime of paying a 25% VAT on everything you buy besides bread and water means that you may as well attend whatever ambiguous institution is at hand, but if you're American things get more complicated.

Statistically speaking, there is an evil-you with a pointy mustache and beard out there somewhere that didn't attend art school and has roughly the same skillset.

All things considered I urge you to reconsider white-knighting for a for-profit art school apparatus that has ruined the lives of tens of thousands of people just because it may have worked out for you.

I agree that it's NA problem since I'm from europe and our countries will pay for our education if we're good. But your argument boils down to "does it pay off" while I argue for "does it make you a good artist".

For every self-taught artist there are about 1ooo schooled ones with same skillset. There is a very major reason why they are so rare and why there are only few self-taught names out there. Also think outside of the box. All of them successfull self taught ones come from artistic families or surroundings so they really didn't need art school to begin with.

I worked in a game design studio but I don't anymore. I'm getting paid better thorugh freelance and I'm working on exibitions.

I have 8 years of art education (high school and academy) behind me and I can say with pride that I'm better than any self-taught goon that I know.

An art school that emphasizes a traditional curriculum of representational art is arguably the best environment possible for an artists' improvement and networking opportunities, however if you are american you are basically asked to make a deal with the devil; a lifetime of crushing debt for a poor chance at an artist's meager median wage. 7 of the 10 most expensive educational institutions here are art schools, I'd be surprised if any were less than $15,000 a year.

Rob Liefield, yet another example of a working artist that never graduated I suppose. Some of his artwork is pretty silly but I guess he has to be counted. He's kind of a product of his time, you'd be hard pressed to get into his position with art like his these days.

There aren't really many guides per se but the mega file does have a lot of books and tutorials from other artists though, definitely worth scoping out.

Neal is wrong. It happens. You'll notice his whole argument is "People who say tracing is bad are buffoons.(citation needed) do want you want because everything will do an equally good job of teaching you to draw.(citation needed)" You'll also notice this argument is completely idiotic and unsubstantiated. In fact pretty much every single great artist since at least the renaissance has agreed that life and gesture drawing are the best ways to learn how to draw, and usually this opinion comes from first hand experience.
On top of that, the legality of tracing is in a very grey area. It is definitely possible to get sued for tracing work. Possibly even photographs.
Using photos as reference is a completely different thing than tracing (although even that can sometimes end up in a legal grey area depending on what and how much you reference).

If you want to trace, then this is your likely future.

I don't really know to be honest i could do a comic or 2 for 'em. It would be great practice before i get into my own. Or i could just do characters and stands for them. Either way it'll be more of a load on me drawing wise but apparently drawing this much lately actually caused me to improve a bit.

First time posting on a drawfag thread. Here is some OC I made.

Gotta say this the design universal is decent can be done in anyway and can easily be recognized. Im making a guess here that the overall aesthetic of the clothing comes from concepts of knights and crusaders. Try sketch different looks and dont be afraid to change the body type, hair, face even taking an arm or leg away may bring out something in your character. Also draw them in an environment usually its best to draw your character doing something they do. Try drawing him swinging a sword or riding a horse evening sitting down.
Last piece of advice I'd give is make sure your challenging yourself when you draw a new character because if it was easy for you to draw you could do a whole lot better, or thats at least what I tell myself.

The image itself is a screen capture of an entire thread in jpg format. If anyone knows what to do to fix this problem, that would be great.

You need to work a little on the line weight m8. You got some solid ideas, but you need to work on using the thickness of lineart to show the volume. Thicker lines were shadows would be and stuff like that

I'm working from thick to thin at the moment, but yeah, I'm not terribly good with line weights. I mostly do animation which doesn't really use any line weight and sometimes your goal is often to work out line weight, so going to a comic style has been throwing me for a bit of a loop.
