Abrams said the movie wasn't a sequel. They're not the same worlds. If there's a next one I expect a third narrative device apart from the "found footage" and "low budget film noir" of the first two, in a third separate universe that uses the same extremely long build up of tension and nearly unsatisfactory release.
JJ pretty much declared his fetish in ruined orgasm porn by making both of these movies.

it's a "blood relative" whatever that means (closest I can think of is how Prometheus had "some of the same DNA" or whatever of Alien, but that was still an Alien prequel unlike if someone referred to Species as a "blood relative" with some of Alien's "DNA")
and then the guy who actually directed 10CL said it was the same universe but not the same timeline, which doesn't make sense unless the third one involves time travel (somehow they prevent the New York incident, but cause the alien invasion?).
but they're probably just making this up as they go along in order to justify slapping the Cloverfield title on an unrelated movie, and whatever the third movie ends up being, it'll be like somebody doing their homework the night before it's due.

I know Abrams is a fan of Stephen King's Dark Tower series, it sounds a bit like they're trying to shove a round hole into a square peg to make it look like they planned it all from the beginning.

i really liked this movie. i even liked the goofy twist at the end.
