What would a leftist alternative even look like?

It can't happen in a capitalist society, that's for certain.

Why can't we have a decentralized social network that doesn't datamine and manipulate its users? One that lasts instead of rising and falling unlike the shitty gimmicky startups the market keeps propping up. Might be slow going at first but with a drive behind it in the current political atmosphere it could be something.

perhaps the site won't datamine but other parties sure as hell will. The government could insert a tentacle into this and use it as yet another means of spying.

So how about this. Base it out of the TOR network or other encrypted decentral system, no personal details are put across but you may fill a profile with your personality, beliefs and trivia about yourself.

You can friend people, form groups, post and have feeds, share content and use it to organise. But I must emphasize, absolutley no personal details, to ensure that it can't be used by our opponents to single out members.

We should seize normalfags though at some point, if there are too many individuals to keep track of they can't stop all of them.

There is and It's called GNU social.

There is also a bunkerchan masterdon instance

I thought it was just a Twitter replacement for now.

What's masterdon?

what defines a normalfag in this instance? Being snobs is just going to turn people off, instead we should get to people from existing leftist communities and encourage anti-idpol sentiment and push away liberals and the like.

Your thinking of quitter which is a popular GNU Social UI

on the Other instances its more akin to Tumblr imo

Mastodon is a twitter clone thats compatible with gnu social.

I would say to maintain security the best way to expand would be to connect with people you already know for sure and form local networks that will eventually coalesce.

The average social media user who is there for the photos and friends. None of the content which social networks offer is really original, they all take from each other. The biggest problem is probably marketing because we won't have a media machine behind to drive up investment.

Do you know if people are already setting up on GNU Social? I think the new opportunities really need to be taken advantage of instead of people posting memes on the monitored places like FB or Reddit, since they're all obscure for now. A new place with a different atmosphere, and a lot of fun around the politics, like an imageboard except not as autistic. So it drive away from the liberal/conservative nonsense and focus on core issues.

Probably needs a good brand like LeftConnect or something.

I don't know the overlap between Holla Forums and Holla Forums but if somebody can get some working group of developers together, there's a sympathy for decentralization in places.

How about we just purge it and teach people not to use their real identity online?

imageboards are leftist alternative, no commercialised superdata

Are you joking. kikebook is 100% hardcore leftist.

be careful, people lurking here tend to get commie-pilled

Social networks are extremely anti-human structures, and should be completely abandoned and replaced by forums, imageboards and the like.

An aspect of social networks which plays to capitalism's advantage is that it tends to hinder dialectics. The best example being Twitter, because it feels like absolutely everything about it was designed to promote circlejerks and prevent debate.

The left should encourage people to meet in person, discuss their ideas and reinforce civil society. It's clear by now that talking on the internet does nothing to sate the human need to socialize, and with capitalism endlessly isolating people, we're encouraged to still in our cocoons, our contact with the outside ending at the computer. Of course, you can't cure alienation when capitalism itself is spreading it nonstop, but it's still a step in the right direction. People have to have their humanity returned to them before they can do anything to the system, because if they can't even find themselves, how can they find Porky's yoke upon them?

Everyone has blurry photos. No one asks for information. Everything is shared though.

The leftist alternative is to create a fake facebook page and to use it to collect pics from real people for your fap folder.

There used to be Unionbook. RIP.

Am I stupid or is there no way to just browse without logging in?

You're not stupid. That's how it works.

There was a project called Crabgrass awhile back. Dunno if it's still going.

I think the trick to popularising an alternative is interoperability. Create a platform which can login and aggregate feeds from Facebook, Twitter, other popular sites without the crap (like ads), and which also has its own stuff (XMPP chat, timeline, image boards etc).

People will start using it for the easier decluttered social media and gradually their core account with the new system will expand too. This could be aided by allowing stuff the other sites don't - peer-to-peer transfers, uncensored political speech, anonymity, etc.

Ideally base it on distributed onion systems like Tor, or better yet, those networks they have which run peer-to-peer through boxes, without relying on an ISP.

We all do.

Does anyone else remember Diaspora*

Why clone Facebook when you can clone Miiverse?

I stopped doing that back when my cousin told me it gave her this pop up message when I was

This is why the fake facebook profile is key and so is having a changeable VPN for certain things.
