I was listening to a mainstream brazilian rapper and in one of his songs he actually mentions Marx, but it's in a line that translates more or less as: "these rich kids know Marx, but we know hunger"

I stumble upon similar lines all the time so my question is: why is throwing Marx under the bus such a go-to technique to stress how much hardship you've endured? I mean if you went through poverty shouldn't you be interested in social thinkers that try to grasp the roots and causes of this poverty instead of dismissing them because you think it gives you legitimacy? Fuck these people

Because Marx was a rich kid who ruined his own wealth and mooched off a bourgeois i.e. Engels.

He wasn't different than the rich kids the brazillian complains about.

Sounds like he's complaining about champagne socialists that read theory but don't do anything about it.

Marx wasn't wealthy, and saying he "mooched off a bourgeois" is just a twisted way to portray the reality: that he was living in exile, under heavy vigilance, blacklisted, virtually banned from the places where intellectuals traditionally get their financing and living from (including universities, where liberal intellectuals decry public enterprise while mooching off the state) and making his income from newspapers that got systematically erased by censorship, so his only source of income was Engels, which hardly made for a comfortable lifestyle. He was certainly no stranger to poverty for most of his life.

And either way, this is of no relevance. There are tons of rich people for them to attack if that's their concern, even left-leaning ones. They're attacking a symbol for "academic socialist thought", not an embodyment of wealth.

They're attacking the same boogeyman of champagne socialists that liberal conservatives have, yes.

This. Though there are the equivalent of lifestylist liberals in Brazil who use Marx to virtue signal, there are also plenty of hardcore Marxists among the lower class. Having the rich academia removed from the class struggle isn't even a unique thing to Brazil.

It sure as hell isn't a boogeyman where i live.

Of course it is, after all it's based on the dumb assumption that real Marxists make quasi-religious vouch of poverty, and someone holding a regular job and owning a car is violating its values.

That's not what people call champagne-socialists here. Our champagne-socialists earn high salaries yet use their networks to jump queues for "luxury" social housing. Our champagne-socialists call for socially-mixed state schools yet have their kids attend catholic private schools.

Because Marx was just getting famous for mostly other peoples works. What communism he wrote himself was vague and authoritarian. People at the time knew he was full of shit. Other people actually explained communism and it was libertarian. Somehow he got famous for it after his death when he should not have.

it isnt the marx the rapper is throwing under the bus, its the entitled rich spoiled kids who like pretending they are fighting for the revolution

People who rise out of poverty and become petty-bourg are some of the most reactionary people. They believe in bootstraps because if they did it then it is possible for everyone to do it. It's not a surprise they would throw Marx under the bus to protect their new found position in society. The same goes for all USA gangster rappers who glorify 'the grind' etc.

Earn high salaries from where? Which networks? Is "champagne socialist" meaning "the one party that isn't the Conservative one" here?

And it's this supposed to be a contradiction? Again, you're just echoing the stupid conservative assumption that a Socialist carries himself as if not living in the capitalist world and not bound by the realities of it. We don't need to endure the worst elements of an unfair system or make our families endure it in order to prove our integrity to others. We live in the system while trying to change it, there's no room for believing we can change-your-lifestyle-maaaan capitalism away from existence, there's no "revolution starts with you" bullshit here.
