If immigration depresses wages, then why do so many conservative neo-liberal parties in Europe with an overt anti-labor agenda oppose it?
Sarkozy of the UMP (now LR) in France and Berlusconi of the FI/PdL in Italy both infamously campaigned on a strongly anti-immigration platform in the last decade and it could be argued that Trump might be the apex of that market nativism — he both railed against immigrants and claimed wages in America were "too high".
Wouldn't it make more sense for them to support mass immigration as a ploy to weaken class-based politics?
Noah Cook
You're confusing their elections agenda with their actual agenda. You'll notice, if you pay attention, that once they got to power those people did literally nothing to stop or reduce immigration.
Berlusconi had 20 years to "solve" the issue and couldn't be bothered to do so.
Their "anti immigration" policies are nothing more than propaganda to entice alienated citizens into joining their party.
Grayson Jenkins
It's called populism for a reason. You appeal to some notion as if private sector is "based job creators" and government is "evil & corrupt tax-payer-money-wastin' commie opressor mediator", and from that, you or the people deduct that less tax is good because "less money for those evil commies, that restricting immigration is good because "dey tayk our jobs that based job creators create" plus they are probably terrorists too, that there needs to be less welfare because "them mentally ill trannies do sex change operations on taxpayer money" etc.
Of course they never restrict immigration on the basis that they can shove loans on them and turn them into low-paying jobs so they can become good, obedient wageslaves. Those immigrants that are on welfare which conservatives like to moan about are not nearly as much as any of the native population, simply because lots of the immigrants are not even qualified to receive any welfare at all.

This. It's just like liberals who pay lip service to social justice and do jackshit about it.

But that was their actual agenda. Sarkozy even set up a "Ministry of National Identity" that enforced deportation quotas…

Uh? What's "reddit spacing"…?

To be fair, liberals do actually think that their whining solves problems.

Immigration is reverse outsourcing: instead of moving his factories abroad, Porky simply enjoy the movement of cheap labor into the country he's already based in at zero cost.
Charles Robinson
Then why is porky spending any dollar to "intergrate them" if it's more beneficial they don't intergrate and form a "slave caste"?
Angel Kelly
Because they aren't. "Integration" is literal virtue signalling by liberals that never do shit.
Nathaniel Gray
What about all those government programs in Sweden/Germany and these nonprofits that spend lot of time trying to intergrate them though?
Juan Davis
obviously there are elements of racism involved but if you believe the race/IQ/genetics stuff it's obvious: the short-term GDP benefits of third-world immigration outweigh the long-term costs (welfare spending, policing, surveillance, increased violence) of having a ton of Africans or Arabs move in. Once they settle they're basically there forever, too. this is pure utilitarianism.
you'd have to be a hardline white nationalist to oppose, say, Chinese immigrants, for example.
Jacob Murphy
They basically do nothing because they openly reject the economic basis of migration. Cultural tensions are rarely caused by ideological conflicts like muh sharia law, they are a proxy for the material relations that inherently divide demographics.

It actually does work the way with Asians though, "HBD" bullshit is mostly an American thing.

As oposed to this.

Neoliberals claim the opposite from the outset. Immigrants create demand for diverse local services (healthcare, barbers, ethnic restaurants and so on) and those new jobs are more likely to be filled by middling native workers. So while immigrants take the manual labour jobs it pushes natives into the new emerging service sector and due to the demand there is a slight real wage increase
The people who lose out are the immigrants who arrived earlier and the undereducated natives competing in the manual labour market. The rise in the wages of the service sector is slightly better than the decrease in the manual labour sector so all is fine in the neoliberal world.
Ryan Jenkins
Uh? So proper spacing for improved readability is "reddit spacing" now? What does it even have to do with fucking Reddit?

Because cracking down on immigration doesn't stop it, it just makes the immigrants more vulnerable to exploitation by driving them underground.
Jason Ward
I pointed this out in another thread but basically immigration is always going to be kept selectively operating, they pick and choose who they let in based on Porky's needs while capital is free to cross borders and money is free to flow away into tax havens.
pretty intelligent responses imo.

Reddit spacing is two line spaces between each sentence.
Like this.
Normal spacing only uses new lines between paragraphs. It's called reddit spacing because at reddit you have to double space between each sentence. There's nothing that makes it more readable any more than saying literally makes a point stronger. Btw this paragraph is how you should space posts.

Don't forget that almost every Berlusconi government was backed by Lega Nord, a party whose whole platform is muh immigrants, and they never did anything worth of notice about immigration.
Wyatt Scott
There have been more immigration under Sarkozy than under any president before or after him. It was all a facade.
