Venezuela has a mixed market economy who happened to nationalize certain sectors, and decided to mismanage the whole thing because it was all managed by the state rather than the people. Not a socialist country at all.

Venezuela's problem isn't the "socialist" system it enacted, it's that it's an oil-fueled economy. All oil-fueled economies in the world are doing badly right now, which is compounded by the fact that Maduro is not a good manager. Venezuela did great under Chavez, lowering poverty rates and raising literacy. Venezuela's current troubles illustrate the issues of non-diversified economies and the importance of democracy, not the failure of socialism.

"explaining" does absolutely nothing. after about 10 words your audience's attention span will give up to go listen to a hysterical reactionary that gives them an easy, punchy answer.
