I'm unironic, but mostly for his stance on suicide. If you're looking for a socialist movement that will keep you alive, lots of guys have done it better.

They committed suicide, ok we all know. The ideology was not one of suicide. The suicide was one of panic after a congressman got shot and they thought the US was coming for them (and they were probably right about that part). I'm not saying he's a perfect man or a great man, he was flawed, but nobody ever addresses the accomplishment for what it was. If they never killed themselves, everybody would be on board with what he built. The ideology itself and organization tactics he used to get there were among the best the west had seen in the 20th century, and he probably had the biggest accomplishment of all of them. Of course, it could have been better, he was flawed and imperfect and even corrupt, but it was a pretty great accomplishment for what it was.

Unfortunately, it ended in mass panic and suicide and that's all people take away from it, but there's no reason we can't study his ideology and methods of organization which led to building a massive socialist commune with hundreds of Americans.

It was pretty close. What they had going on there was a lot closer than anything "socialist" countries were doing at that time.

Except for the fact that they were preparing for a "White Night" (aka mass suicide) event even before they had left San Francisco for Guyana (according to one eyewitness in pic related he came pretty close to ordering a mass suicide while they were still in San Francisco, and was only talked down from it by close associates)

Given that and Jones' deteriorating mental state/prescription drug consumption it's pretty clear that it would have happened eventually
