Yes, I whole-heartedly agree. Class as a social construct, wealth inequality, and the continued destruction of our shared ecology are of greater concern to humanity than how one ought best treat the lady with the dark stubble and broad shoulders. Here, my friend, we have true agreement.

However, we do have to accept that there are trans people in every community - and how we treat those individuals while building towards a more communal way of existing on this planet may indeed be indicative of our own capacity towards openness, sharing and cooperation. An oft-misunderstood quasi-sexual minority that springs up naturally in every kind of community provides, I think, an interesting kind of bellwether, as it were, to how open that community is to differences that occur between individuals.

Before we dig into the scientific aspect of treatment for gender dysphoria, let me posit a question-

What if we find a subject which has no apparent neurological abnormalities to speak of who claims to desire becoming or living as the alternate sex? Or perhaps to alternate, what if they feel like they don't have a strong pull towards what we might call a traditional gender role on either side of the spectrum? Totally normal human brain of whatever gender they've been living as up to this point, but strong desire to change and become the other.

I think that there is an underlying assumption in your reasoning with regard to gender that limits you from seeing the potential possibility that gender is, or perhaps can be, a much less rigid binary than you perhaps perceive it.

What if the best possible treatment for people that feel they want to dress this way, talk that way, behave this way, want sex that way, what if the answer to all of these questions was not neurological, or pharmacological, but was instead cultural? What if no one really cared how someone dressed? What if no one really cared if a cisgender woman was extremely masculine or a cisgender man was more femme than any woman you've ever met? What if they were socially accepted either way? What if these things are, at their core, sociological choices for an individual to make and not necessarily disruptions of cognitive functioning?

To some degree there is a sort of war-on-drugs thinking here. Why is cannabis bad? Because it's illegal - not because its bad for you, but because society will outcast you and to some degree torture you for even possessing it. I think that gender is somewhat similar. We have a tendency to shun individuals who do not meet our expectation of 'normal' - but is there a chance that this has nothing to do with their brain chemistry and more to do with our own demands for how others must be? Would this not be the ideal treatment for the patient, and also for ourselves?
