Imprisonment is potentially useful for people who could be rehabilitated, especially in a society free of capitalism's ineptitude and apathy whilst execution is, imo, just fine for people who do nothing but hurt others and stir shit up with no reason and no claim to insanity.

I don't think it's horrible, but it depends on the context and sort of work. In the US prisoners are used as de facto slave labor, but in Norway (or so I hear) some prisoners are able to work jobs during the day and can even go home on the weekends.

Gulags are antithetical to socialism. You're extracting surplus-value, or at least labor, from a man at gunpoint. It's still exploitation, regardless if it helps public works or not, or if the man's a criminal or not.

That said, like others mentioned, the current prevalent regime of pure idleness sometimes accompanied by complete isolation is remarkably primitive, not to mention cruel in its own way.

Of course, the idea is to minimize crime, via the two paths of a society hopefully free of poverty and bigotry, and libertarian laws. With a small enough prison population, they can be rehabilitated instead of punished. Aren't Norway's and Sweden's prisons like spas? Something like that. Reintegrate the perp in society.

All of this, of course, once the new society is already built. Until then, Cheka and regular prisons, but no gulags.
