We had two presidents that came from a socialist background but have strayed away from the movements to gain popularity and campaign funds. I can call them social democrats if i'm feeling generous.
The rest of our congress and senate still a bunch of neo liberals and conservatives who defend whatever company pays for their campaign, if they are not buisnessman themselves.
Bullshit, all of their "socialist" measures were basic wellfare strategies that are pretty commonplace for most first world countries. Most buisnessman especially bankers got even richer during the last 12 years. And finnaly when Dilma decided to take some more left leaning measures she got her ass Coup'd.
As for the country being ruined. Aside from the last 4 years the first decade of 2000 was one of the best periods in our economic history and the best when i comes to quality of life. During the last 4 years we got hit by international crisis,China bought less steel and Right wing politicians stagnated the senate and congress along with midia fearmongering to justify the coup d'etat. But still even with all this bullshit qualitty of life and economy still pretty much the same they ware last decade.

Brazil was ruined by neo-liberalism and techno-capitalism. Its also an unstable hell-hole with varying climates, elevations and terrains that makes it nearly impossible to effectively govern. Huge mixture of different ethnic and racial groups. Large amount of tribalized, aleatory violence in the sprawling slums that no one did anything about. I don't think Socialism was the problem.
