help me comrades.

Come to the US. I'll provide food and shelter as long as you dress like a cute girl and have sex with me.

i'm an ardent socialist but if the leaders of the revolution said they'd bring back those grey pieces of shit i'd literally side with the fascists

Commie blocks while a little depressing at least kept the warmth in very well and where built to last I can't say the same about a lot of the cheap apartments going up here in the UK

60s USSR looks comfy as fuck. It would by high on my list if I had a time machine.

Forgot pic.

This is slowly turning into a tankie architecture thread

Move to East Germany.

What if the rent was free?

Commieblocks were the cheapest housing they could build

Are these still typically offered as public housing like they are in the US?

Turning into?

They are also known as "the projects." You don't want to live there.

It's an odd feel tbh

...

I know that feeling.

I'm from Warsaw which is a bit of a clusterfuck architecturally but at the same time it has a lot of lefty architecture that's pretty interesting.
Socialist realism is pretty great. It's very monumental, a lot of the architects continued their ideas from the 30s and it just gives off the feeling of a 'city'. Some of the modernist stuff like the Party HQ is also aesthetic. Overall, it just has some semblance of effort to it rather than the later Gorbachev 'fuck off' approach to architecture.
Some stuff was really modern and slick, like the CDT store, Supersam or the Galeria Centrum. Obviously they were showpieces but nevertheless they had actual thought and quality put into them.
The main failing of modernist planning was the rejection of street-facing buildings, resulting in these weird parallelograms which aren't really practical or comfy. A lot of current urban planning is based around trying to connect these isolated islands together. Also, fethisization of the car above all else which is very anti-pedestrian. Also, the space around the Palace of Culture is a complete urban vacuum. But in any case the stuff produced then, the 'showpiece' architecture (and intellectual culture in general) was at a much more sophisticated level than what came after it.
1 - The courtyard of the PZPR HQ.
2 - Constitution Square. As an aside, some of the socreal structures are somewhat similar to what was being built in America in the 30s/40s.
3 - The CDT Department Store.
4 - This is a historicizing socreal building in a little alley right off of the historical quarter of the city.

Fuck off, modernist architecture is ugly as hell.

All the various housing projects in the US died out a long time ago, the poor are confined to ghettos these days

Those big repetitive blocks are called Khrushchyovka or something like that. For all their lack of comfort or beauty, to this day they serve a vital function in a lot of countries which fucking refuse to offer more low-income housing, either privately or publicly built. I would rather my city be covered in Khrushchyovkas rather than have homeless people, but it's clear Porky disagrees. From inside his limo, an ugly building is harder to ignore than a hobo, I guess.

Those more exotic Soviet buildings are wonders the likes of which the world won't see again.

I lived in one and it gave me fucking PTSD

Had a conversation with a slav electrician in his late sixties about these, a few years back. Apparently, some were so shoddily built, you could smell if someone had taken a shit throughout the whole floor.

Tell us more.

Have you tried welfare?

There is a Renaissance look to some of it.

A permanent smell of piss and Heroin drenched, violent in the air, permanent fight or flight mode. It's disgusting,

Public housing is still around, but the buildings are old as shit. What's really different is the ghetto. Gentrification is pushing the ghettos into the suburbs. Look at what happened to Oakland. That place is going to be nothing by Google drones in five years.

Sounds like Mississippi.

That's not a problem with the Khrushchyovkas themselves, bro.

become intelligent or productive!

….

oh wait!

Living in blocks is like living in fucking jail, no way it's comfy.

...

He thinks being productive pays.

Well it does pay. Just not to the one being productive.

I've always appreciated how the Frankfurt school of witchcraft and wizardry managed to make the weather in the eastern block always grey and cloudy tbh

jackson here, can confirm

How did the USSR ever get so demonized? Like I get that the Stalin years were shit but every post-war pick I see looks nice and afaik everyone was having their basic needs met. The only criticism people seem to have is their were waiting lists for consumer goods which tbqh i dont really give a fuck about.

...

why are their parks always seem empty despite high population density buildings?

shit taste, no aesthetic sense alert

...

Don't forget being embarrassed by Tito
