The Japanese have this condition iirc called Paris Syndrome. Some Japs have this idealized version of France in their mind, so they go on vacation or whatever, and are badly shocked to discover the rude, smelly reality. Ouiaboos, basically.

Anime fans basically have Tokyo syndrome. They're often so alienated in their native environment that when confronted with these idealized relationships in anime they cling to them like a drowning man. Some seem to legitimately think that people in Japan actually behave this way. When I was studying Japanese in school I encountered these people pretty frequently, at least in the first semester. Most lost interest when confronted with the reality of learning the language as well as interacting with actual Japanese people.

But anyway, I don't think it's surprising that anime has only become increasingly overrun by wish fulfillment of that type as economic pressure squeezes both the industry and the consumer. The more alienated they become, the more addicted they become to these fantasy worlds without competition, where women are plentiful, available, domestic, easily attainable, etc. Obviously not all anime is bad, but it definitely seems that a certain type of anime has begun to predominate, and I don't think it's an accident.
