I live in the south and I can say I agree. Most rednecks are some of the most fiercely independent people I have ever seen if you can just sway them on like one or two issues they are all basically commies anyways. I like you, Peebles, but I would argue that a great deal of that 'spirit' has been manufactured to benefit the status quo, not the people that have adopted the aforementioned 'spirit'.
Also, how is the 'spirit' in this scenario not a reflection of the people and their views, which you claim to dislike? How long can the 'spirit' realistically expect to stay static in an ever-changing world with more new people added every day?

I think this is exceptionally true on the surface - no one receiving welfare, going to food banks, living on a tight fixed income, etc. likes the idea that there are people out there who are making fucktons of money - more than they ever could in their lifetimes - just on the interest on the money they got from daddy. You, me, and everyone else who works every day just to keep food on our plates and a roof over our heads realize that this is not fair and that there could be a more equal system put into place that benefits more people by keeping wealth from concentrating in the hands of the few.

However, at a deeper level, do we expect that most of these poor people would behave differently if the roles were reversed? I think that this requires some degree of ideology, born out of theory and/or empathy. To be clear, I don't think that this is a North vs. South divide, I think it is rather a natural human inclination to hoard things for ones self interest. I mean really, we've talked a little bit about how the specter of Christian theology is still haunting the south (and the US in general) - but isn't Christianity at its core a communistic philosophy? How could, what, like 70% of people in the US claim to be Christian and yet have so little to give to the poor and needy? This is what my fear is - that even if you are able to persuade your fellow southerners that the struggle against capital is valid, how many of them would actually hold that idea if they suddenly found themselves outside of grinding poverty? You've called them A+ proles, I guess I just don't see that in their behavior yet, though I hope you are correct in this assertion.
