I take the position of Socrates. A functioning Democracy is one in which the average voter can be trusted to rely upon logical argument and reason to direct their vote, and that anything less is mere demagoguery.
This is why I feel that people calling for Socialism now are too early: we don't even have proper Democracy yet, and Socialism requires proper Democracy before it can begin to function otherwise it devolves into an eternal DotP, Fascism, or back into Capitalism.

He never even so much as entertained the thought that, maybe, the reason he was so much smarter than the average American was the fact that he was born to a wealth factory owner. He is not 100% wrong about democracy but overall his writings are really insufferable.

This manner of "people are stupid" critique that is applied to masses can easily be applied to representatives or singular autocrats. Individuals or groups, both have biases and blindspots. Similarly, if you argue that experts or technocrats will help an individual autocrat rule, then that argument can be applied to groups as well. Because, technocrats or experts can help groups decide as well.
If you want a serious leftist critique, read Badiou. Badiou doesn't dismiss democracy in every instance, merely the fetishization of it.
