Theres a little bit more to the ending then just muh meta. Although it basically takes center stage the moment it appears, I don't think the message it was trying to convey was entirely centered on bashing the fans. Basically what happens at the end of v3 is what happens at the end of SDR2: The characters think that they're in a "fucked if they do, fucked if they don't" situation. However, even though their confidence are at an all time low, they instead reject the notion that they're are powerless and try to change their own future by doing things they can only do. It doesn't matter who you are or where you came from, you still matter to the world.

It's not even just the meta shit that's bad about it.

It still doesn't make sense in this universe when the rules are established. There is no getting around it. They got the wrong person so everyone should die. Now, if the writers were competent they would have stopped at DR2, or even 1, but nah, they had to keep going and had to keep giving NISA the chance to fuck up the localizations.

Only Tsumugi knew they voted wrong (since she's the actual killer). But it wouldn't make good television to just kill everyone before the big twist, so she just executed Kaede as a patsy so the game could go on.

In the first game the first death was actually pretty clever, ultimately Junko was executed for the killing of her own sister, the rules were always respected, even by Junko herself.
Someone who claims to be making a perfect imitation of Junko can't break the fucking rules willy nilly and if people are watching it they wouldn't have waited until the final trial to leave the show, they would've left if at the first.

Two things they did well in this came: the character development with some (not all) of the characters and the whole twist with Gonta.
The character originally are as stale as a piece of moldy bread but some of them manage to redeem themselves, I honestly felt like shit while having to accuse Gonta while he kept going "I don't understand", Kaito too had a great character development.

The rest was absolutely tedious however, glad I pirated it.

No other thread about Danganronpa, so I'll post here. A friend loaned me the DR 1 & 2 collection for PS4, and I quite literally just finished the first game. What the fuck did I just play? I'm not one for visual novels, and I have to say the story was absolute trash, as was the ending. Is the 2nd one better, or do I just fuck off an enjoy the Junko porn?

Also, are other installments so god damn Japanese-style long-winded? The final trial of the first game was like two and a half hours long, with the ability to save before the trial starts. That's worse than MGS4's hour and a half cutscene. I never fucked up a trial, but I feared the consequences of losing at the end of one. A lot of time potentially wasted.

I am a pleb who died a few times in DR1 and DR2, but there's basically no punishment for it. You can continue right where you left off and it only affects the final grading. DR2 has a mid-trial save but still no meaningful penalty.

Long story short, people liked it because the original game had extremely dark undertones that would be lost in the official translation, basically the cartoony over the top art style and cooky characters were living in a post apocalyptic world and all details around their stay and snippets on what the outside world was like drove the game's story more than the murders themselves, in the end they make sure that you yourself must wonder what kind of shitty world the protagonists must have escaped from when they originally chose to get shut in the vaults. Every character is a stereotype of popular series of the time, like Celes being the stand in for FKMT's mangas, Maizono being the idol type from sol etc. with the odd one out being the mastermind herself. Now people who dislike it play it on the whole keikaku aspect of the game, which doesn't really make sense since the game itself doesn't try to. Anyhow, people got the wrong message from it and hence Spike Chunsoft started milking the series for all its worth and, most terribly, pandering to western weeaboos. This became the main reason why not only we're getting no better Kenka Bancho titles, but why DR itself keeps on living and its plot keeps on getting increasingly retarded. People think that this new game's ending is supposed to be meaningful or them trying to say they're DONE with their cashcow franchise, I'm much more inclined to believe they just ran themselves into a corner and decided that the only way out was the Samson option. I'm happy for it because it means people will stop talking about the series but at the same time 1) Suda51 claims he wants to put Monokuma in his fucking games, as if he wasn't enough of a sellout fucking over Grasshopper already, and 2) they didn't even attempt at hiding the fact they couldn't handle their own creation's success. It has to be, specially that fight of Fukawa against Utsigi, I bet she had underwear more revealing in the original, did she? What other censorship there is beside this one, if it was censored at all, not only on AE but also on DR2?
Finally, after finishing AE I'm going to watch DR3, so in what order should I watch it? That confuses me a lot.

I was worried about the underwear, Utsugi's underwear looked more like pajamas than underwear, I thought that maybe in the original she used a childish bra instead of the 18th century underwear she is using, the writing could tone it down, but it was pretty explicit nonetheless. I was surprised they went as far as to include something like fucking child prostitution that mom/daughter set sounds hot as fuck.
As for the game, it's the PC version. Screenshots could look better but I have it at minimum. Dunno about the audio, but I'm willing to bet it is. If you're going to use M+K make sure to adjust the camera speed. I had it at 5 and it was hilarious.

Also, I didn't know you could hit shirokuma with the dance bullet. I want to replay to get the things I missed. One of the things that frustrates me is that there's no gallery, or episode select, at least not yet, I hope you can unlock that later.

As for the graphics, I fucking hate bloom, which is probably what gives that look. Other than that is an straight 1:1 vita port, it seems, dunno if the PS4 improved the graphics, but just check which options I have deactivated. Not sure if pushing it more will make it look like it wasn't a vita game.

Actually, I think DR2 have way better characters than DR1. DR2 characters feel more like a group, not exactly sure why, but there's a lot more chemistry between them. You can actually feel that they want to work together, unlike the DR1 characters, where you feel they hate each other. I guess that's both good and bad, but in DR1 you can expect a kill every time because, well, you feel how much they hate each other, whereas when someone dies in DR2 it's a surprise, specially the way they do it, and it's usually actually reduced to Monokuma's motive, with some help of the white haired piece of shit.
Also, DR1 characters were way more bland than DR2 characters, and I just don't care about half of them, they are just forgettable, whereas DR2 characters are pretty hard to forget, maybe except for Teruteru, because they were all pretty active in the course of the story and there was always something that happened that made you remember them clearly.
Sure thing, DR1 is a pretty self-contained story. I really hate that they made fucking unnecessary sequels for the sake of milking. Someone else already stated why the ending have such an impact, because no matter what waits for the group outside, that wasn't really the point of the game at all, but rather how did they get there, and all of that is thrown out the window with the sequels, even when the sequels have similar messages.

No the first game ended vague so you could imagine whether Junko's wilde ride was real or not. The only thing you knew was that some cataclysm happened, that's it. Some autist like a year ago did this whole examination of how actually stupid Junko was, that she only thought she was smart and charmed dopes into doing things for her with her tits. If it wasn't for her sister she'd never have gotten far like she did.
There's clues about her having taken over the school on just her and her sister since her sister is le super Black Water extraordinaire or whatever. There's also clues that everything from Monokuma to the execution sets were just re-purposed aspects and equipment from the school itself (most obvious is that dumb bear's eye is on the school building). Considering it was made from the bones of DISTRUST which was basically anime SAW it makes sense.
Junko is a perpetual liar, when she explains technology it's like a kid talking about spaceships. She has no idea what she's doing her whole motivation is dumb - but because she has tits and because her sister had a severe mental complex she pulled off the take over of the school.

Then DR2 came out, made Junko's wild ride legit, made her a supervillain and made the "team despair" thing real - when before it was just allusions to the multiple personas she plays up because she's a mental brat who "gets bored easy." Oh and all the other stuff was stupid, too.

Then there's the spin-off which only cements it more, and the anime which is the worst and ends with a happy ending that retcons the whole series to some extent and made no sense.

Then we get DV3 which goes full Anno and End of Eva's the whole thing, complete with egotistical autofellatio, empty half-assed philosophizing and basically a whole last act and epilogue which talks down to the audience for wanting more of the only game that's even making SpikeyChun money and fame.

I think it's endemic in Japan that once they start getting famous they shoot themselves in the head. The Nips have a suicide taboo kink so it makes sense.

On one hand, it was a closure, it was kinda half-assed, but a closure, and I wasn't expecting such an ending. It was pretty fucking uninteresting after Kirigiri's death, though.
Also, the fact that everyone from DR2 was actually alive was expected but an ass-pull and makes me mad that the people from the first killing couldn't be brought back, although for logical reasons. Hagakure was till the very end, but other than that, it was pretty nice, the ending made me shed a tear and all. Should I play DRV3 or just end the damn thing on this high note, just like I should have done with DR1?

I'm in the same boat. I'm still tossing up weither to give V3 a shot or just leave it simply because the whole meta angle and the translation give me bad vibes from it.

It was a nice serie and I like the fact that DR3 wrapped it up, which is why I'm concerned with V3. Also, I'm glad TWEWY doesn't have sequels.

user, the second game is miles better than the first one. The characters are way more interesting and likeable, the cases are better designed and the murderers actually have motivations this time. The story still sucks, of course, but it's way more entertaining and batshit insane.

The third game is pretty much in line with the second game quality, except the end sucks.

You're likely thinking of Komaeda, because that's all there is to that game, and he's only interesting because he's a blunt subversion of both the protagonist and perspective of the first game. He is a living sequel unto himself.

That's not the "entire second act", it's one chapter, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that motive, the problem is the reason the murder was committed on itself. But I do admit that's the sole reason Gundham is the best male character of the gameFuck you for saying it's Nagito, even though his approach to the whole thing is interesting. Also, the setting of the murder is pretty fucking cool on itself.

There was because they were forced to kill someone in that situation. With earlier motivations it was actually optional and avoidable, they could've gone about their lives afterwards. Fuck you Sayaka.
