How bad is Dead Island?

It's on sale and I'd like to know if it's worth giving it a try.

I'm looking for a co-op game to play with a friend of mine. We played Dying Light together before and although we hated the game at times, we feel like playing another one like it.

Dead Island is trash. Dying Light, their second attempt at pretty much the same concept is much better.

You want to play the inferior to dying light then?
Movement is slow and combat is clunky, horror is not a description for this game.
You should count your blessings that you didn't play this before playing Dying Light.
If you're looking for a good coop zombies exclusively for you and your friend, I can't recommend you because there are not that many.

It had potential, but there were so many retarded design decisions and the story goes to shit a bit early. There are only 4 protags to choose from and only 1 or 2 of them are likeable. A wooden paddle has the same durability as a steel pipe and other stupid shit. As others have said, just go play Dying Light instead.

Its really really bad. Starts nice enough. The dichotomy of the modern tropical resort and the scenes of violence and gore as society collapses is great stuff. But then you get to the 'oh shit we need special zombies' that are so dull and uninspired like "uhhhh fuck i dunno fat guys that explode?" and it does nothing new. You get to the city and so much of it is the same copy pasted sewer levels on repeat and it ends in a fucking run through an asylum to fight a military super zambambo for no reason. It gets worse by the hour.

I sometimes take Dead Island for another spin, just to play through the resort area again, then call it quits. There is no reason to play on really, the enemy level scaling makes it so you're always using the same strategies.

OP, you can play offline coop (split screen I believe) with your friend in Resident Evil Revelations 2. Could be fun.

Well, that certainly sounds bad.
Any played the expansion, Riptide or something?

Riptide is worth a play through, original game is just shit though.

This is a great game to play if you like watching a movie or listen to podcasts or something in the background.

I hated it.

yeah riptide was alright, it's the same shit as before but they made the levels more action oriented and gave you an actual final boss, you can also import your saves from vanilla dead island to play in the expansion as well.

I liked it and the sequal too, but I got them really cheap so I felt I got some value out of them as I played through both 2 and 3 times. I didn't monkey around with multiplayer and did not care for any of the characters but it was fun and spooky at times. I hope to play Dying Light when it goes really cheap too.

I enjoyed riptide because you can play as an aussie cunt who uses his bare fists to obliterate zambies. Also, Dying Light, made by the same faggots is pretty enjoyable after you unlock the dropkick and the dropkick upgrade.

Oh
Didn't read the whole post, you already played Dying Light. My bad.

you should pirate it regardless

Shit game. "Tedious" would be an understatement – everything is a sponge, especially early on, story is shit, locations are mostly shit (especially once you get to the city), and it has probably the worst enemy respawn I've ever seen. Not only are even regular mobs spongy, making killing your way through them a chore, not only does EVERYTHING respawn the moment you pass a loading screen, but there's even quite a bit of backtracking, especially in the city, meaning you have to kill those cunts again and again and again, which serves no benefit other than wearing down your fucking weapon, so not only did you just waste a shitload of time with a boring and repetitive task, you also ended with a net negative as your weapon likely broke, so now you need to waste even more time looking for a new one. Shit was infuriating. Dying Light was better in every possible regard

Dead Island is one of the shittiest games I've ever played on a technical level. Imagine borderlands 2 level scaling weapons with brain dead ai escort missions and waves of sponge enemies. Tons of glitches, imbalances not in your favor, and other crap. If you want an online coop zombie game, get dead rising 2 or left 4 dead. Duke Nukem Forever is better than this trash.

I'd recommend playing Dead Island Riptide instead. It's pretty much Dead Island but moderately better, unless you really, really like the first game's tropical resort setting.

And yeah, the new guy they added to Riptide is more fun to play than any of the original four player options.

You're probably meaning that raid mode or whatever it was, right?

the files are rather easy to figure out how to mod so you should increase stamina and give super power to kicks

But it is.

heh
ok, you're rig-

the first level is the best it goes to shit after that (literally because of all the sewer levels)

No need to get sad, Brendan. You can do both the campaign and raid mode in split screen co op.

Is there a way to make weapons not break?

Moira looks like tumblr, but she's not that bad. She ends up loving her dad and learns that guns are good, so whatever.

Or hell, I don't even mind the breaking weapons, is there a way to reduce respawning so that I don't feel like the weapons are wasted?

Yes to both, you can also manipulate containers to even spawn only specific weapon.
I played it 3 years ago, but it's a matter of ini editing in notepad

I'll give it another look then.

I liked how they made a sequel that one of it's selling points was that they allowed you to port over your stats and items but they added another stat in the sequel and all ported over characters started with 0 in that stat.

Yeah Moira is the worst part of Revelations 2. We never, ever needed to meet Barry's family.

Dead Island is super fun if you are playing with a good friend.

It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't any good. It'd have been completely forgettable were it not for their trailer, which is the only reason people say it "had potential". It had no potential. I hope their trailer guy went on to better things, though.

Legendary (orange item) come every 8 hours of ingame time. The looting is not random.

wrong
it was marketed as a zombie survival game with some deep and engaging story shit playing their cards very close tot their chest before release and revealing as little as possible, the problem was that only the "zombie" part of it was correct;everything else was in true german fashion either the most generic shit or the most rushed, generic and unfinished generic shit

Played through this with my squeamish sister and we both enjoyed it. Pretty buggy at times but otherwise quite good.

Worse than dying light in literally every way.
Setting is interesting for the first hour, then you get bored of palm trees and blood covered huts.
Combat is wonky, it tries to be an rpg with enemy levels and weapon rarities, but the melee weapons have very little heft to them, and guns sound like shooting compressed air. The zombies become bullet sponges so you can look forward to smacking them for a while.
It tries to be over the top and comedic, and then becomes very serious in the next setpiece, and it just feels off.
Also, Techland went full kike and "rereleased" DI 1 and Riptide, full of bugs and shit, and quietly pulled the original copies off of steam.
Dying Light was a lot of fun, don't bother with this mess, go play the Following or something if you want zombieshit.

I guess everyone gave their opinion already, but I'll say something anyway.

Is the zombie game being sold as emotive and with meaningful story just to be Borderlands with zombies, with shitty mechanics and with shitty characters.

It was only interesting when there was a rumor that the chinese girl was a boy.

Gotta give it to them, the trailer was pretty amazing.

I played this and it felt like single player MMO with FPS view. Though could be fun with a friend, but garbage at solo

Ok let me be the counterpoint for this. Dying light is basically an improved Dead Island, partially due to being able to come out way later and just copy and paste and then improve on it. I honestly think that Dead Island is good for what it is. Wasnt the greatest game but still was pretty decent. The game gets better when you get to the city and has a few crazy missions especially one escort mission where you practically run as fast as you can from one side of the map to another almost.

If you like running around and killing shit, Its not that bad and has a few characters that have decent skill trees. I would honestly only recommend it for less than 10 dollars though.

Dying light is a more tuned and polished zombie game (though it still has its bugs and issues) so if both were the same price i would say dying light. I still really like dead rising though.

lol, i didnt think they still sold this game. one of those shitty games my parents bought me when we got a PS3. Don;t waste your time

What gaem is this?

Dyling light is just a better Dead island. Play Dead Rising if you want to co op

Doesnt Dying Light have co op too? I will agree when I played it with friends Dead Rising was fucking hilarious.

Has there ever been a bigger bait and switch?

Dropkicking zombies off the roofs of the buildings in the second area of Dying Light was the best shit ever. We need more games about sending zombies ragdolling from high places.

I played it, I suppose its only fun when you bring friends.

Dying Light is the best zombie game i've played. There's nothing like the first night in Dying Light. Shit is scary as fuck. The only thing that sucks about dying light is the story is weak, but other then that, the game play at night at max difficulty is always enjoyable.

Dead island on the other hand…

I pity you.

I pity you more, there is plenty of shit in dying light that you can criticize it for yet here you are spouting lies.

It's decent with friends, better yet with alcohol.

Pirate it. Jesus why not just make a thread about the game instead of asking such a stupid question.

I played it with 3 friends and we enjoyed laughing at how fucking awful the story and writing was and the retarded animations so I remember it as a good experience, but I'm sure playing it solo would be one of the worst games ever.
