I dunno what the fug is going on in this thread, but I played a little and it seems like a neat game. I messed around with some settings with the FPS display on, and tl;dr
You would think any modern PC could run this at 6 million FPS, but (probably because of driver overhead in the ancient engine design) it frequently drops to around 100FPS on my very respectable gayman PC, so do yourself a favor and at least disable shadows. I tried to record a demo so I could do more meaningful benchmarks, but couldn't get it to play.

I also messed around with the overbright bits settings. Overbright lets textures be displayed brighter than they are stored (where the lightmaps are bright enough), which helps with lighting effects. 2 bits is the default, you can see that 3 makes the game look washed out and 0 is too dark and results in too much contrast around coronas. 1 bit actually looks more pleasant to me on this map, but I think I'll leave it at the default of 2 bits.
Also, the "overbright bits yes\no" setting appears to have no effect, either way it uses the "map overbright bits 0-3" setting

Had some trouble getting it to work initially but after following everything that was posted in the thread, I finally got in. Had to do the compatibility mode deal and the direct ip join. Then later had to do that \vid_restart.

Glad I got to learn how to play while the server was low though, as it picked up to a good amount of players shortly after the map changed to that snowy depot map with the tank.

Could you try emptying your jaymod server and telling me what happens exactly when you try and connect to the server in the OP: does it download things correctly then give you the error? RE5 is a dumpster fire and RE6 just made that fire even higher. If I had to choose to co-op in one of these two games I'd choose to go back in time to September 11th 2001 and somersault off the top of world trade center onto the plane as it rams into the first building. atleast you can shoot negros in RE5

IF and ONLY IF you take RE5 and RE6 as popcorn B-movie tier over the top action schlock then it would be alright and I wouldn't want to hang you from the highest and strongest tree branch I could find. But guess what? They are still called Resident Evil. If the games were called "Cockpunchers vs zombies I think" then I'd probably consider them to be fantastic games. Every Resident Evil game between 4 and 7 are absolute garbage that have nothing to do with what Resident Evil is supposed to be. Fuck, even RE4 was already deviating from the norm and started this fucking shit trend that ruined the later games but ATLEAST RE4 TRIED KEEPING THE HORROR ELEMENT EVEN WITH ALL ITS ACTION SHIT AND CAMPY NONSENSE. Same goes for 7, it tries something new and still keeps that horror element that RE had, but knowing crapcom if they continue down that line it'll just be a repeat of 4,5 and 6.

Not saying that RE should be what RE 1-3 were in terms of gameplay and style and I'm not saying that it should be "100% serious business 100% of the time" or else we wouldn't have "you almost became a Jill Sandwich" or any funny/lighthearted/memorable moments from RE 1-4. 5 and 6 have a serious lack of the atmosphere that the series had going. Everyone just turns into a superhero and does whatever the fuck they want like punch a fucking bolder.

TL;DR: RE5 and 6 are schlock. They are god fucking awful Resident Evil games. However, the games themselves are fun over the top B-movie style action games. If they were called something else with no relation to RE, then we could've some serious potential. This same argument goes for games like Splinter Cell Conviction and Blacklist, okay games on their own, but horrible splinter cell games.

I eventually switched to medic and realized i can bypass explosions by simply bhopping everywhere, it's fun. Just carry a shotgun, the thompson and mp40's suck when on the move.

It's easy to place mines. Just pay attention to where the enemy may come from and account for chokepoints, hiding holes, cover and abuse that the enemy won't be expecting mines there.

By the way, do the custom maps work with the OG game? I can't run Legacy for whatever reason on this shitty old XP machine and it's sending me memory allocation errors whenever i try to join the new map.

RE4 is gritty, rusty, slimy and everything is horrible looking. RE5 was bright and green. RE6 tried to dial that back but the atmosphere isnt quite there yet.
Agreed there, RE4 has to be treated as a different beast compared to RE1-3. Is it a good RE game? Debatable, depending on which angle you approach it from. Personally, I like it but im not blinded by how fun/good it is. It still is the black sheep of the series if you will.
RE6 could've followed the same notes that 4 did. Could've, Should've, Would've. RE6 is just not a good Resident Evil game, it does no justice to the series and does plenty of wrong. If you thoroughly enjoy the action and how B-movie tier and stupid everything is, i cant stop you because i like stuff like that myself be it in actual movies or in vidya, but they have no place if you are just going to slap the RE name, lore and characters to it.
Conviction also has fun co-op, dunno about blacklist. I'd rather CT co-op anyday though.

It's practically impossible to find a server in older FPS games like UT99 that have a vanilla experience. Most servers have custom sounds, meme maps, stupid mutators like low gravity or instagib and bad gamemodes like sniper only. I'd rather play with the bots tbh

The trick with custom content is really not to overdo it. Also you really don't want to play stock ET. There are 6 maps and only two good ones and balance issues out the ass. Hell it doesn't even have a shotgun.

Custom sounds would be fun. Most servers have custom songs in the V menu.
