Kenshi Thread

An indie squad-based game with RPG bits, buildable settlements, robot skeletons, and a ridiculously large non-procedural map where nobody cares about you and you'll probably starve to death in the desert or get your legs eaten by frogmen.

Aesthetically, it's somewhere between Morrowind and feudal Japan. Visually, it looks like it's from the mid 2000s, which is roughly when it started development. Gameplay-wise, it's hard to find a comparison but it's pretty fun, and very open-ended.
The dev is a cool guy, but if you want to pirate it, magnet link here:

Is game still controls like poop? Proper interface and tutorial when?

A thanks to the user from the previous thread who got these mods for me and other pirate anons. And the mod folders must be the exact name of the mod itself.

Also a map so that you know where you are going

let's see if it actually gets past 92% this time

still runs like shit though

don't mind me just shilling my mods.

steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1172950799

I'd upload them to the nexus or somewhere but I update them so frequently that it'd be a blitzkrieg of small patches I'd have to keep track of and I'm too lazy to do that.

Yeah, Nexus is like the GoG of mods. Pretty cool service but hella shit with updates.

Oh this probably goes without saying but if anyone here downloads my mods and finds an issue with them please let me know so I can correct the problem. Bugtesting all the stuff I put in is really tedious and players doing all sorts of crazy stuff is a pretty good way to iron out the kinks.

Anyone has the latest stable version that was recently just released? Preferably without the dolphin porn.

I HAVE A FUCKING SEEDER WHY THE FUCK IS IT STUCK AT 92.96 PERCENT REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Did you try pausing it and un pausing it?

stopped reading at indie

Buy it.
Give your shekels to the Dust Bandit.

You're so cool man.
Can I be as cool as you when I turn 16?

Update to the fish people. The Sultanate can be allied with. Or if you don't wanna do that, you can just pay some money to atone for your sins if you make them too mad.

not until I play it

everyone except for this french faggot is stuck at 92 percent too, how the fuck does this happen

Is there anything actually interesting to do yet? Something that isn't pointless, compulsive grinding?

For the guy with the gourd man mod, you should have called the black gourds niggourds.

There aren't any black ones, just purple ones I think. Unless you mean the thief faction, in which case yeah but I don't want steam shooting up my ass.

The tutorial is actually great, I never touched the wiki until I needed to learn about things like weapon stats.

OP, the new map version was pushed out to stable.

lofigames.com/0-97-6-out-now/

Might want to keep an eye on TPB, hopefully Dauphong will throw another torrent up soon.

There's at least one new skeleton flavor in the new map, so RecruitPrisoners might be broken. Pic related.

Lots of bosses. A few bandit outposts you can kill. Tengu's vault. And of course, the citybuilding aspects.

gas yourself. It's indie in the same way that Dwarf Fortress is indie.

...

What do you even get out of building a city? Every time I tried to play, it just seemed completely pointless like it provided no benefit whatsoever.

With enough effort, it will eventually provide an infinite amount of food, then money. You get a staging location for your adventures. You can make excellent armor and weapons for your entire party.

It's also incredibly comfy. You can get detailed with your interiors, if you want. You can build up a fairly large city, and watch it thrive. You can be autistic and automate supply chains. It's an oasis of cozy in a world that doesn't care about you.

One big thing you can do is aim to try and take down the leaders of factions. I won't spoil anything, but if you manage to kill, say, the Holy Pheonix or the Emperor of the UC, fun geopolitical shenanigans may occur.

...

Where the fuck is anywhere for good base locations?

Rate my squad

The developer's intent was that you have multiple bases to exploit different resources. It was specifically designed so there were very few places that give you everything you need.

I mean in the sense that fucking nothing is flat. There's that one spot north west of the great desert, and some other places, but there is fuck all that is flat.

Press [ or ] to make your buildings level. Now you can build on any terrain.

Has somebody managed to build an human zoo?

Cleared Simion's Fort. It wasn't easy I went straight to the main building that Boss Simion was in. The Seven Samurai did an admirable job, but at the worst of it, we had 5 down and bleeding out while Simion and two of his guards were still up. Kikuchiyo recovered quickly and saved the day.

Simion himself was wielding a Edgewalker 1 Horse Chopper - 1.64 cutting damage, 0.35 blunt. I also got a Mk2 iron club from a chest, which was a bit strange. It had to be a prank - maybe some godly skeleton smith millennia ago decided "I'm going to make the best goddamn iron stick in the world" and then gave it to a friend as a joke.

Simion himself and his elite guard are now locked up in the RoboDojo. Burn takes them out for sparring every now and then. His martial art skill is up to 9 - hardly respectable, but it's progress. I'm looking for engineering blueprints right now so I can build a proper RoboDojo, right now it's just a longhouse.

Pic unrelated, just some cannibals encountered en route to the Leviathan Coast.

Dorohedoro/10

I meant from the modder's perspective you daft cunt. The Nexus client can keep mods updated by itself.

Leviathans are fucking terrifying.

They're basically big ol' cows, don't worry about them.

Don't get too comfy around them, especially if they're by themselves, since there's the ocassional cunt that will try fuck your shit up for shits and giggles, fortunatrly they're not too fast and you can run away from them.

I almost forgot, A few days ago I discovered the lost library on my journey to become a samurai master and it was filled with blood spiders but I was faster than them so I just ran around collecting some Katanas and on my way back I stopped a waypoint when it was being attacked and kidnapped the strongest berserker there and took him hostage until he agreed to join me, How do I get better gear and how do I get more money?

tldr Give me the most efficient base so that I can make better equipment and gear for me and my crew please

6 guys or more to man your shitty base, hemp farm, iron mine, your choice of food source, relatively near a town of some sort, could even be a hive shithole. Hire mercenaries and then re-hire them when possible. Use loot and proceeds to advance. It's likely you can make fuckloads of money just selling iron plates so you can re-hire reliably, also money teleports between squads so if one person makes money in the holy nation the squad in the great desert also has it.

Time to add another city to my Doll mod. The Tarlander Trade Union needs a base of operations.

no comment

Fuck u hive is good now buy something

Buy the lantern. Always buy the lantern, as long as you have the cats. It's so goddamn comfy. Goes on the belt slot and actually casts light.

I packed up the base at Gut because I didn't have enough space to expand and I really wanted a RoboDojo, now moving to an area near Spine Canyon. It's too much of a pain to manually tear the town down and empty out all the inventories, so I'm going to reimport without preserving buildings once we get there.

The one thing I underestimated when I settled down was just HOW far away the iron was on the prospecting map. I built a shoddy little mining camp and threw the slaves in there, with a few villagers to round it out and two of the Seven guarding the gate. Fortunately, it didn't even count it as a separate outpost, I guess it was just close enough.

The main town is continually attacked by sand skimmers, but the remaining samurai finish them off quickly and rarely take hits.

Man its really fun to make cities in this game.

With the modding tools, I mean.

Some of you may have dug enough into the internals of the game to know this, but there's a dev menu you can access with shift+f12. The obnoxiousness of steam taking a screenshot each time aside, there are some really nifty things you can do. One of those is viewing and placing roads.

Characters, both yours and NPCs, will follow preset roads when traveling long distances. This massively cuts down on CPU usage because you don't have to do intensive pathfinding for every single unit in the world. You can take advantage of this by building near a road, you'll get far more general foot traffic in the area. Just next to Spine Canyon here, I've got both Empire and Samurai patrols, and lots of manhunters (who inevitably attack us because "lol they might be slaves" and then end up getting a nodachi to the gut) and mercenaries, who seem fond of walking into the slave mine and entering the small shack, standing there for a few seconds, and then leaving.

However, I'm doing a little city planning here. When you have the road menu open, you can place roads by just clicking on the map. I'm trying this now, hopefully it won't break anything too badly. With luck, peasants and visitors will actually start walking along the paths I want them to. I'm setting up comfy streetlights because wind pretty much never drops below 15mph, and hopefully everyone will actually walk along the proper path. I've even connected it to the main road that passes through this part of the canyon.

With this much foot traffic, I'm also hoping to set up a proper bar. Shop counters are buggy and poorly explained, but apparently people will buy booze from them. The base in Gut never saw anyone but the occasional tax collector, scripted caravan, and bandit raid, so the only patrons to the comfy tavern were my own samurai.

I saved some people from cannibals, and now one of them is following me. Can he join me or is he just staying near me because it's safer around me? I can't seem to interact with him.

keep wandering and he'll either join you or run off, more likely they latter.

Units in follower mode seem to have a very small chance of joining you outright, a chance of joining you when you're a good distance away from where you bought them, and a higher chance of just leaving. Buying slaves puts them in follower mode. I bought 7 slaves from a market at 1k apiece, one joined me outright and two joined me after we left the slave camp.

They were still all named "Slave", so they went into the slave squad and do shitty manual labor. I did take their shackles off, but only because that decreases combat abilities and sand skimmers swarm my town constantly.

All of my worker units get an order to sit somewhere at the bottom of their queue so I can easily spot check the bar or communal houses to see who's idle. I built a shitty metal shack for slave housing and put some furniture on the second floor. I'll throw some sleeping bags up there once I get around to making them - can't grow cotton anymore since we're in the desert, so I'm saving what fabric I have.

Except for banners and sitting cushions. Both were important for the RoboDojo. Burn is sitting there awaiting disciples.

When Tinfist is added to the game, will you join up with him or seek him out to defeat him as the ultimate test of your skills?

He's going to become the new Sensei, even if I have to cheat to get him to join.

My plan originally was to have Burn select two of the Broken Ones (investigate the areas around the Black Desert if you haven't found them) to become his pupils. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to recruit them, and the Recruit Prisoners mod hasn't been updated to add the new skeleton type, so I dropped it.

He did join me actually, i just had to leave the slaver's camp. I'm glad at least one of the people saved was grateful, I freed a berserker and she attacked me for no reason. Back in the cage she goes.

tbh all structures should be buildable with blueprints.

There should also be a way to recreate the ancient faction eventually with your own bases and shit.

I believe you can make the outpost buildings with high enough research

I am starting to realize why people have not settled the Leviathan Coast

Also holy shit there's a little black speck next to the guy in the middle of the gate and I thought it was a dead pixel but its not

Well? What is it?

No idea. Probably part of the armor/weapon or something off in the distance. Nearly had a heart attack though, I haven't had this computer for all that long.

A game that's been in Early Access for 9 YEARS.

stop supporting this cancer

Its been consistently getting updates, and for most of the time it was just one security guard's side hobby before it took off enough that he could hire an actual team, causing the amount of content per update to increase massively.

...

steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=894703352

My Doll race mod got a huge update if anyone cares. Main features are a new city in the Deadlands and a secret thing in the Leviathan Coast.

Dumb frog poster

pepe is an important part of imageboard culture
you are no better than people who post on japanese imageboard but dont like anime
maybe it is time to gtfo??

2/10 bait, not even getting a (You).

My water shortage is currently biting me in the form of a severe delayed food shortage, even though we've got plenty of water now.

Gourdman update soon. The Shek have had it too good for too long.

And its out

WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY SWAMP
tier my man.

this game looks fucking great. downloading.

...

Pretty much yeah. These Gourdmen are exclusively of the Ogre subspecies, meaning they don't have the strength penalty the normal ones do. Also I swear to god that the name wasn't intentional.

I've had for several years and played it in spurts on and off. Also I modded it to be like Mount and Blade and its way more fun now. Check this out:

nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/75200/?

That mod looks neat user, thanks for the recommendation

No problem, its one of my favorites.

Where the fuck do I find research artifacts beyond the books you can buy in stores? Can I buy some from other places or am I missing something?

There's a place in Purple Sands that gets you Engineering Research

I have never been so cockblocked before.

THE SKELETONS DID 9/11

The solution probably relies on modding skeletals as a whole, which is broblems :-DD

Ruins. Ruin type will be shown on the map once you're close enough. For Ancient Science Books, look for ancient libraries and labs. For Engineering Research, you need post-ancient workshops - there's one off the coast of Vain, on an island.

Orange books, as you've seen already, available everywhere, except OMG SO HOLY nation iirc, they're a bit dum-dums, on religious side, okran is good - suitable answer for everything.
Cyan, ancient books, available in many guarded/not completely leveled ruins (not much though), guarantied in labs, but also can be bought/stolen in World's End in shops and Mechanists lab, and in skeltal acid bathing hole aka Black Desert City iirc (scrapyard shop, just outside town).
Engineering researches as said are available in post-ancient workshop, few around map, and also, since few latest updates, in same shops and chests as ancient books in WE and BDC, in even less amounts ofc.
AI cores in ancient labs, and few can be acquired in BDC scrapyard.
Only orange books are replenishable goods, other will not be restocked.

That's definitely what it looks like, and the FCS is too limited to allow me to do so. I am rustled.

wew, what will you do now?

Sit and wait until the new land is unlocked so I can make my dystopian techno-Prussian faction and my yandere super-soldier faction or until the devs give me enough stuff that I can make the submod work.

weew. I tried to import my guys but I only got three of them to come over. Do they not have to be passed out or something?

I don't know why that would happen. If they were added by a mod, the mod would still need to be active if you wanted them to appear in the imported game. I mean that's probably obvious but it doesn't hurt to check.

Vanilla, my skellie bro didnt come and I think someone else. I have a very light team.

Huh, that's odd. Its never happened to me so I dunno why it is.

Graphic wise it sort of looks like mount and blade, so would I be able to run Kenshi if I can run M&B

Its all one 580 square km map though, no overworld. You'd need a fairly decent computer to run Kenshi optimally, but its worth testing it out.

I mean I'm not complaining but this is a silly situation I have found myself in. At least you all will soon have an immersive lemonade experience.

If the holy nation doesn't come for a lemonade tax I'm going to be upset

I believe something like that might be possible when diplomacy is fully implemented. Realistically though I think it would make sense for all the major factions to ask for something like that. Odds are you'd be the only game in town with such an exotic crop and quickly rise to prominence, and the powers that be would want in on that.

BRING ME THE LEMONADE MAN

I want to play this game more but there needs to be more of an endgame added before I can get into it. I'll just run around kicking ass and get a settlement started, then?
I do wanna see where this fag takes the lore though.
what does that skeleton say when you talk to him as a skeleton?

If you ask him about the past and stuff as a skeltal he says something like "You can drop the act now. Don't worry, I've made sure the humans will never discover the truth."

There have been recent updates to optimize some code but it's quite CPU intensive.
Best would be just to pirate it and test if you can play it, and see if you like it as well.

so they literally did do everything wrong?

Holy Nation was probably right all along.

The developer's intent was that you have multiple bases to exploit different resources. It was specifically designed so there were very few places that give you everything you need.

this game makes me

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Bump

All right, for anyone interested, my Scaled Folk race mod has gone through a major update. New features include:

Another update. You can join the commies if you want.

Pros:
-free food and medkits unless there is a shortage
-can recruit soldiers for free
-if you have a base they will give you supplies for no charge

Cons:
-if you have a base and have more than x amount of money they will confiscate a ton of it.
-there is a limit on how many soldiers you can recruit unless you do certain things
-no stores, everything is given to you by the state or shared between individuals, unless you make it yourself.

Oh but the base visits aren't working yet, hopefully soon though.

I can't believe there's not a single mod out there that either adds skin-tight pants that won't clip out past the longcoat, or fixes the longcoat so even the smallest pair of base in-game pants won't jut out through the sides.

Modeling is arguably the most difficult thing its possible to do in Kenshi modding. It'd normally be making an entirely new race model but I don't think that's actually possible for modders to do. Given how small the community is its no surprise no one's done it.

Neat. Not-Mos Eisley and poor man's Kamino

Thanks! I've added a lot more settlements since then as well, so there's definitely a lot more to see now.

Honestly I'm really hyped for the nest update. I have so many ideas for the factions I'm going to put down in there.

*next update

Since the next one will open up the last bit of the map

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to unfuck the armor shop in Mongrel, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Everyone just clips through the damn thing.

Have you tried refreshing navmesh? Shift+f11

Thanks, but it didn't work. Can't a man just steal in peace? Tough world.

I dunno what could be causing it then, that's pretty weird.

Game's amazing but the number one thing that is triggering blood gushing autistic rage is how enemy squads tend to spawn out of nowhere right on top of you.

Try to venture into the fogmen or cannibal territory and watch how 20 men groups appear out of nowhere, sometimes in the middle of the field of battle, leading to a rage quit.

It's not about the strength of the armor, it's about how good it looks when you wear it

What areas are you most hyped for in the next land expansion? I really am excited for the grey area in the far southeast because I'm gonna put a faction in it.

Also, what's the rate buddy has been spitting out updates at? Was it once every 2 months now or sooner? I've lost track.

Oh there's definitely gonna be a faction there I just think there will be enough room for another.

Also updates come like once every 4 months or longer.

All the spots I pick for bases suck. I think I'll just take resources, stock up all my shit and just import without buildings so I can go set up shop somewhere else nearer to ancient places. The desert fucking sucks.

I know exactly how you feel user, Also I lost all motivation to play this game since I couldn't become Master Asia.

REMINDER THAT ONCE YOU GET A DECENT SQUAD UP, HIGH TAIL IT TO THE TOWN IN THE CENTRE OF THE FOGISLANDS
Crumble, Multiple Fogmen on the run, John 60 FUCKING STRENGTH Completely free of charge!

FOGMEN
>Use shitty blunt weapons, meaning even that idiot n00b you just hired with 0 toughness will be able to tank a few hits, and get their toughness rank up safely. Provided they don't get hauled off Wearing decent armor, your survivability is even better. Just make sure you take down Fog princes and their guards first if you see them, they're usually the most dangerous
>Great for levelling up your party members for reasons specified above, and if you get into trouble just retreat to town and be careful not to hit a guard by accident they take it personally and can turn hostile, but this might be in previous versions only, FF isn't as bad as it used to be I think.

DRAWBACKS
>You need a decent amount of guys to be able to take on multiple fogmen at once, that, or you need to have gait over about 18 because you'll need to do a lot of running to town.

I realize that this is high risk, and some of you might be too pussy careful to do that, but once you do this, you can quickly rank up your guys AND get decent money. 10 fog princes robbed of their heads is 60k.

Seconding this. You should also establish a village somewhere north of world's end, place is actually great with safety found nearby in villages and world's end itself. Comfy spot near enough to ancient shit and cannifucks that your existence won't be too bad.

DF is free though, so it's not like you're paying for an unfinished product

what do?

Pick up her unconscious body and run far enough to patch up her wounds and then start running again

Yeah fair enough. That's probably what would happen, even if my guys all have 60~ athletics.

I wish there was a way to disable allies from running off to attack enemies automatically if you set them to follow a character you're directly controlling. Crossing empty stretches of desert is boring and shouldn't require micromanaging, so I browse while traveling across large distances, only to come back when I hear the sounds of fighting to find one of my soldiers has decided to stop following the leader and instead rush off on his own to engage the pack of starving bandits that were off in the distance because one of them set a single foot within his zone of hostility.

Just hit the passive button in the bottom right, mate. They'll stop caring until you tell them to care, or they get hit with a stick.

FUCKING CANNIBALS GET OFF MY LAND REEEE

Swiggity swoogity, Im coming for that delicious booty

Bam

Daily reminder the skeletons go on adventures with meatbags to make sure they never discover the truth.

Don't go into the fog without a lantern non-hive!

I can sell you one for a low price..

steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1196685100

I made a submod for my Doll race if anyone's interested. It makes it so they need to consume a special type of fuel that can be synthesized from oil.

Hot damn, you finnaly worked around it?
I'll give that thing a try tmorrow

Yeah it turns out hunger actually still works if you turn it higher than zero, the bar is just grayed out if the character is a robot. You won't know exactly how in need of refueling your Doll will be unless the starving background appears on the portrait, so its not a perfect system, but as long as you top off your droids every so often it should be fine. I kind of think it fits since robots wouldn't be able to feel hunger anyway, so they'd kind of have to guesstimate how much fuel is left in the tank.

That's exactly how androids should work. Everything seems fine for a while, then a siren pops out of their ass and big light exits one of ears, blinking while she screams "ALERT! I NEED A FUCKING BATTERY CHANGE!" alerting every cannibal in a 250km radious.
Great job man.
Sugestions I've been meaning to try but haven't found time: I think there's a way to evoke the "character create screen" to give yourself a new squad mate. Pretty sure that's how random recruits work.
Look into that "recruitable" prisioner mod, because if there's one thing Fallout 4 did well (relatively speaking) was the "spoopy androids replacing people".
Would be a great way to explain how they "reproduce" too.

That definitely sounds like it could lead to some fun body horror adventures that I would definitely approve of but unfortunately the FCS is too limited to do something like that.

As for reproduction, this is something I am looking forward to addressing when the final map section is released and I can plant down a faction there that I have been waiting a very long time to implement.

I have no idea why i did it.

I'm tired of Crumblejohn getting raped by hits to the stomach. Anyway to get a decent variant of the Holy Nation armor that doesn't have a holy nation flag?

Buy or steal some of the plate from a shop. Or buy or steal the appropriate blueprints and make your own plate.
Things only have the flag if you lift them from faction'd owners.
