To answer your question satisfactorily: Trump's selection of Pence as his VP shored up one of his major weakness– the evangelical "base." Pence was not a no-name inside that group of people, even though there were likely christian republicans who could have been swayed to stay home or even vote for Clinton (as he campaign expected), putting Pence on the ticket really assuaged their fears.

I'm from Alabama and for whatever reason a lot of non-racist people fly the confederate flag. Most white people see it as a southern pride thing rather than a racist symbol. Personally always liked the flag and living in the south in general, but would never actually fly it because of the obvious negative connotations associated with it. Things are weird down here.
