Prior to that, I'd only noticed McDonalds, Burger King, and Chick Fil A having kids areas with shit to climb around on and such.
Those were fucking gone before I was even interested in vidya. Only places left with proper machines are an old, cheap-o theater here and maybe Gameworks, but last time I was in there years ago, it was mostly stuff like air hockey, pool, etc. Maybe a few ride-tier cabinets like the classic Jurassic Park one, but still. And then there's shit like Main Event where they claim to have an arcade, but 80% of it is is just ports of mobile shit being projected onto the wall.
What I do remember suddenly going missing during my childhood was sand as a medium for playgrounds, all replaced with woodchips. You can't fucking build cool shit, or dig around, in fucking wood chips. And if you fell in it it was liable to hurt more than sand (possibly splinters too). All because of the idea that cats will shit where your kids play.
