About to play this for the first time, what am in for? I want to play nosferatu because they seem cool, but I've heard that's a bad idea for your first go. Post some charts / guides and whatnot.

It's a bad idea because there are some shit unique to them. Without spoiling it, like some guy might be hostile to Nosferatus and you might think that he's hostile to all vamps and just skip him in future playthroughs. If you don't have habits like that playing them is fine though

I never actually beat it, i got as far as the museum and i think there was some fight or some shit but i stopped after that.

There are a couple of clans or some shit and you can join one, you have all these vampire powers you can use and unlock, you can choose to feed on humans but you need to hide the fact that your a vampire so you need to lure people into alleys or shit, and you can get some underlings.

Nosferatu isn't really a first playthrough character, it locks you out of a shitload of content

Nosferatu are to be avoided on the first playthrough because they are built around sneaking. You will not be able to show your face to humans in the hubs. Malkavians are also to be avoided because their schizo dialogue tends to spoil the plot.

Lots of fucking around. The first guard that blocks the way can be outsmarted by climbing up on the crate behind him and throwing something that will draw away his attention. Coming back is harder but I managed it by dropping a giant fucking crate that the crane was holding in a place that let me keep out of their site.

I've beaten it the other day and I'm sad they didn't have the time to finish it properly. The endings are kinda shit and the overall plot suffers because of it but the side quests and characters overall are fantastic. There's a lot of options in each situation and the starting clan really matters. I played as Tremere first and now as a Malkavian and there is a real difference in playstyle and progression, it's quite refreshing. I've also missed a couple of things like your personal ghoul and Ash so the replay value is there. The combat is the worst part, but it's worth it to keep going for the freaks you meet along the ride. Great atmosphere.
I'm curious, what are the biggest differences between vanilla and unofficial patch in content? I couldn't tell what wasn't part of the original release, which is a good thing.

You might need patches to get the odd should be working thing to work, or else get friendly with no_clip, Malkavian is an interesting choice purely for the more interesting dialogue.

The only time I played it I got to a mansion level and the cutscene that played after I finished it would always crash no matter what I did and I didn't love it enough to replay the game up to that point to see if it would fix it.

I really think it's more of a problem with Tim Cain being shit at managing a business (much like the 3.3 million dollar man) and the fact they deliberately chose to use an early version of the Source engine. Both Arkanum and ToEE were plagued by similar problems of time allocation and poor QA.

There's a ton of other useful commands there, for example you can also use noclip and god if you're a casual fuck or if you built yourself towards melee and didn't bring a flamethrower for a certain boss during the endgame.

The Taxi Driver was supposed to be Cain, in fact the game files even store his voice lines with that name, but later source material had him hanging out in a cave at the time so there was a later retcon with the the 'high-tier Malkavian who just thinks he's Cain' story.

Interestingly in the grand scheme of OWoD lore Jack isn't that old, 400 years give or take. It's just that you mostly only interact with the surface-middle levels of vampire society rather than the truly high-level fucks. They, in fact, go out of their way to never show themselves at all, everything is done through multiple levels of pawns.

Get wesp's patch, select the basic option when installing and keep the plus version for a second playthrough.

The basic version doesn't add major new content beyond bugfixes and stability changes (also corrects at least one spot you could get struck at in the original game). The plus version adds at least one new level and also rebalances items, feats and skills pretty extensively.

The game seems to attract some pretty dedicated autists. The unofficial patch is basically one man's decade long spergout, and the guy making the Clan Quest Mod not only figured out ways to add new shit to the game, but actually hunts down semi-professional voice actors (or at least semi-competent ones) to make new content for the game.

I think it's a bit of a reach but it's a great theory either way.

I enjoyed the first half a lot, but the second half was so bad it swung me around to disliking it. Might go for a replay and enjoy it more knowing how to build the character appropriately for all of the late game missions.

There are probably some obscure magical ways to mess with it, I suppose, because there are obscure magical ways to mess with anything in OWoD in case you need it for tabletop role-playing.

Mages couldn't hope to alter a vampire in such a way. Altering it would require immense knowledge of how the curse works: who cast it, how long ago it was cast, what precisely was done to the individual that first received it, etc. Information that simply can't found in a book or even by word of mouth, since vampires themselves aren't in agreement about their origins. Many don't even believe Cain existed or that he is their progenitor, that he's a boogeyman cooked up by the elders to keep the kids in line.

There are vampiric rituals that can allow cosmetic changes to last more than one night, but they'd still need to be repeated every so often to maintain effect. Back in '14, just before the exodus, there were some game supplements released that focused on the Anarchs and gave them a more updated world view and Anarch-only powers. Some of those powers and rituals focused entirely on altering their appearance, but involved stupid shit to do it. If an Anarch saw a tattoo they liked they just had to literally rip the tattooed skin off, perform the ritual and then swallow said skin. The next night they'd have that tattoo in the place the original owner had it on their body. Same thing for shit like piercings too.

It's not that it's hard, it's that it gives you an irregular game experience. You end up using tunnels to go everywhere and have to worry about breaking masquerade because you look like a freak.

I also got Nos from the questions, but I'm a Tremere man myself, so I'd recommend that. Ventrue is also a good choice although you'll have issues feeding from rats and bums which might come back to bite you (heh) during a certain late-game segment

I got Gangrel on the quiz, and it's to this day my favorite clan to play as. So I guess there's some merit to it at least.

My first time through was a Malk and it was actually pretty great. You just get the occasional vague hint as to what's going on from some of the dialogue to be paranoid/thinking roughly in the right direction without actually being able to put the pieces together until after things happen.

Couldn't use ghouls. The way it was written you had to do the deed yourself. Something about "wanting it more than the person you got it from wants it". There were other abilities that worked off of the same principle of you wanting shit more than someone else did so you get it.
That's some of the more tame and arguably better written powers too. There's a high level Presence ability that only over social media called "Flash Mob". You activated the power, typed a location and a time to meet up on Twitter (yes THAT Twitter), and anyone that follows you is compelled to be at that place at that time even if they aren't online to see said tweet.

I like going sneaky melee but firearms can be fun too. If you go Tremere you get some pretty strong ranged and AoE blood powers. The second tier of Thaumaturgy damages and stuns all enemies in a fairly large radius around you.

I played melee with a Gangrel, unarmed+protean is really great and there's some good melee weapons as well when you don't have the blood for protean. I shied away from ranged since the first time I played I ended up hating the way guns felt so much I stopped before getting past Santa Monica.

Tremere is broken once you realize that the base blood magic, and one of the upgraded ones, gives you blood equal to the cost it might be more, I can't remember if you don't spam it like a dumbass. When you get blood, you heal. This can trivialize some encounters.

Early guns suck. Late game guns are way too good. Even then, they aren't terribly fun unless you have the speed ability and upgrade it a few times.

Oh I've seen some of the crazy shit they've put in the newer editions. I used to have screencaps of some of it but I seem to have lost them. The one that will always stick out in my memory is the Thaumaturgy power that let you use your menstrual blood as a weapon. The flavortext specified that the caster did not have to be biologically female, they only had to IDENTIFY as female. When I read that, it become abundantly clear that the entire WoD IP was in the hands of complete shitters and that it was probably beyond saving.

So I just finished this game, I went for the independent ending seeing as how it made sense for a Gangrel and because of the fact that everybody in the game either dicked me around(Lacroix, the chinese bitch) or were hopeless retards(Anarchs). Storywise, the ending wasn't THAT disappointing, but holy shit was the gameplay during those last two quests so fucking annoying and tedious you can tell they REALLY had to rush it. Still, I didn't have that big of a problem with the last half/third of the game even though I know Troika had to really rush that part.

I'm thinking of starting a new game as a Tremere since I like Strauss and the idea of blood magic. Are any of the mods for this game worthwhile?

Some stuff is definitely just too good, as you can get the benefits from it without any investment into it. Which makes some sense for guns, but stealth is absurdly good for how little investment it costs to nearly break the game with it.

In theory, I liked those parts. They are the big action sequence pay offs at the end of the game for your character. Except they are too big, drag on way too long for the style of game, and above all, are mandatory if you don't use stealth to bypass most of the enemies. The combat isn't really good enough for it to be really fun.

Why was the subtitle for this game "Bloodlines" if bloodlines and lineage as a theme never comes up at any point of the story? No generational grudges, no stories of neonates trying not to commit the same mistakes as their sires, not even any instances of clan rivalries besides passing comments. I'm not ragging on the game by the way, I still love it to pieces. It's just I'm baffled by this.

Depends entirely on how long said vampire has been a vampire. A tissue sample from a freshly turned shovelhead has a much longer shelf life than someone that's been around for a century.

You know I was thinking about this too, and I think it must just be because it sounds cool. Maybe a better subtitle would be "Blood Hunt" seeing as how there's 2 of them in the game. I don't know how common hunts are in the lore, so I'm not sure how significant the ones in the game are in the grand scheme of things.

That's retarded, the chess player is the Tremere boss. I can't remember specifically but I clearly remember there is a definitive hint in the game (it's either if you play Tremere or Malkav'). Basically the chess game is in between Ming Xiao and him.

Finally the reason why Strauss can't just take LaCroix place is in lore, Tremere are hated by everyone… because they manipulate like crazy, including other vampires through blood magic, they're just one step above Tzimitze when it come to general vampire disgust of them.

The only endings that aren't completely horrible are the indie ending you got and the Tremere ending. The rest are really unsatisfying.

The game is not good, unpolished, and outdated in gameplay terms.
Sure, it has great writing, atmosphere (until the sewers), attention to detail, and in general good characters, but the game is a beat once and be done thing. Mainly because the game turns combat oriented when you enter the sewers, its rushed, and the story feels like it couldn't be finished properly.

He's right though. I've finished the game at least 3 times and love it but still it's quite linear experience and unless your first playthrough is sloppy there isn't really too much left to discover.

What would you guys think of an X-Com like game but set in the World of Darkness?

You would have teams composed of hunters from various societes and organizations, like the Society of Leopold, various governmental organizations, plain hunters of even specials like the Imbued.

You would be hunting for various creatures, mostly Vampires who would break the masquerade, a werewolf (possible boss?), mages etc. You would have to equip your squad properly for each monster they would be hunting like proper ammo, weapons, gear etc.
