Gearbox's 1v1 Beta Game

Got an e-mail into it last night. I'll post some thoughts on it once I manage to play it.

Game launched in 720p borderless windowed mode and there's no way to change the resolution. Seems promising so far.

Are they just trying every fad from the past few years?

Blunderborn 2 here we come.

Is there a worse combination

I was wrong, this is like the shitty League of Legends launcher it switches to fullscreen when you launch the game. So far it seems serviceable, but that can't keep a game like this alive.

Does it have BL/Battleborn tier dialogue?

I hope randy doesn't try assraping you for breaking the NDA

No dialouge yet from what I can see.

Really? If it's HUD isn't as bad as those games either I might give it a try

...

I'll never fully understand what Randy Pitchford is thinking with games like these.

Spectating a match and recording it. I'll post a webm in a bit.

So far it looks like Quake with 2 weapon loadouts and cooldown based abilities. The cards are just building loadouts.

Do you actually get to shoot stuff from a first person perspective?

Rockets don't hurt you and there's a smash ball for ults.

...

Self shot rockets. So for rocket jumping and the like.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense.

Have you seen his wife? the failed magician clearly never thinks before he acts.

...

Could be an item made specifically for rocket jumping and does no damage to others either. TF2 had that

The gunboats still damaged you slight (-80% self damage at the feet I think) and took away your shotgun. There were reasons not to use them.

There isn't. I tested rocket jumping in the test area and took no damage, but I thought it was just that you took no damage in training. Then in the match I spectated the guy shot a wall near him and didn't take damage.

So is this just money laundering or are they getting government shekels

I don't know if any games do it before, but this is literally the way Paladins differentiates itself from Overwatch

My guess is they're trying to retool Battleborn, since that game was a colossal waste of money, and add shit that's "popular" right now. It's not going to work, since that's exactly why Battleborn failed.

Hopefully they go bankrupt soon. Borderlands 3 will probably be their saving grace, though.

porn when, Randy?

Oh right, I forgot to say that the game has infinite ammo and most of the high level players, not skill-wise but in-game level-wise, often just take the grenade launcher and spam all the corridors with it.

High level play.

I've never played league but isn't that how all launchers work?

I didn't mean the launcher. I meant the deck building. Should've clarified. But as far as I'm aware that's how launchers work. I do waste my life on a few f2p games

Yes, but Paladins does two things right. You can choose the level of any card you own and buying cards doesn't take much currency. Put that ontop a game that is a team game and it's not even something that matters too much.
This game literally locks guns behind loot drops.

Well then I have no idea what it means then because I've never played a digital card game.

Paladins is an FPS made by Hi-Rez
There are certain passive ablilities granted by the cards. It also has ults and abilities like Overwatch. The cards are the only thing that give it a difference really. It's alright for a little while, but the grind to unlock new heroes is way too high.

That's shit

Uh oh, Randy! Isn't that toxic misogyny? What would your lord and savior Anita think? :^)

heh

Kill yourself.

This. I'll pass. Thanks for the info though OP.

Just won my first match. Felt super laggy and I won by just camping a close corridor and spamming missiles. The guy had a railgun and was trying really hard, so towards the end I ran out into the open so he could get kills.
Got my first loot box and cards level up like they do in clash of clans you get a box and then you get a certain number of random cards, for me it was 5, and duplicates get added onto you existing cards to level them up.

Good job showing that furry.

There is no fucking reason as to why in the year of our lord 2017 anyone, ESPECIALLY A BIG PUBLISHER, should have this chinese mobage tier interface.

It's fucking disgusting.
Interfaces are the easiest shit to do, just literally fucking get some dude that has been making websites and phone apps and make him work on your interface. Holy god this looks like shit

WHY THROW MILLIONS OF DOLLARS INTO MAKING YOUR GAME LOOK PRETTY BUT STILL LET THE INTERNS MAKE YOUR INTERFACE
FUCK YOU

This game's color scheme make it look like a Pepsi commercial.

That wasn't me. I'm not going to put my real account name out there, that's just a spectated match.

JEJ

The Triple A industry was a terrible mistake

This is Randy we are talking about. He lives off doing the scummiest shit ever, like stealing from Sega.

...

...

…and I thought that it was impossible to do worse than LawBreakers in terms of visuals.
Maybe I'm too old for this shit but how the hell can they expect you to see the other player in a shiny environment with high level of contrast?

I just imagined something akin to an FPS Megaman Battle Network, instead it's just loadouts that are called decks.

So I've won like 5 matches at this point and I can honestly say, there's no reason to use anything other than an explosive weapon in this game. I tried out the shotgun and an automatic gun I got out of a box and they are just so poor compared to the rocket launcher. The automatic did ~20 damage per shot with a huge spread, and it isn't even hitscan, while the rocket launcher is about the same damage and bullet speed but with explosive damage. The shotgun will half health someone if you're close enough, but in the time it takes to close in on them you could just kill them with the rocket launcher, not to mention the shotgun has a reload animation after every shot unlike the rocket launcher.
As for the skills. There's a bunch of skills that "wall-hack" you and a bunch of skills that slow your movement speed. The wall-hacking is fine, because most of the match isn't spent hunting the other player, but waiting for them to come to you. The slows are bullshit though, they effect all of your movement and I was launched of the map like 3 times because I got slowed and them hit with a rocket and I couldn't jump out of a pit. There's also shit like a sentry turret you can put up, but from what I can tell it's only useful to scout and not damage as it has a long wind-up. Finally, there's a card called "Vampire" which might be the most bullshit thing in the game, you activate the card and it wall-hacks you, but if you survive for 30 seconds you gain 45 more HP and an ability the makes you invulnerable and you just fly forward to where you're looking, combine that with the Tracer rewind card and you'll be literally unkillable.

...

Gearbox has an incredible ability to make games that are so ugly they become unplayable. They don't know that people have to be able to look at games in order to play them.

Honestly this doesn't look too bad. I'll take all the arena shooters I can get. I don't know why the fuck they bother to make it about "cards", it's just a loadout system with a gay name. Visuals are pretty impressive, although the HUD is ugly and the menu assets look very WiP. My worry is that the abilities are going to overpower the value of actual movement and aim skill, which are the points of playing this type of game.

friendly reminder != NDA
also he has not signed anything

Are you using a controller or are you a geriatric pensioner?
Your aiming disgusts me.

Stop fetishizing skill you nazi shitlord.

Is that a real article? Do you have an archive, I actually want to read that, at the risk of my sides.

wooooooooooooooooooooow
that was soooooooooooo hard

Jesus, just fucking die already Gearbox. Whats the point in beating Stillborn in no players?

See

...

...

I mean, Donte's whole argument is

If it came out of a numale's mouth you can be sure said action invalidated it.

They'd say the same thing about sports or cooking if they made themselves look bad.

Why do cards have levels like in fucking Clash Royale? This game looks p2w because of that unless they make max level cards easy to get (and Clash Royale cost 7k usd to get all cards max level)

...

I imagined DSP doing this

...

What happened to Gearbox?
They made the best Half-Life game but have only gone downhill since.

"It didn't tell me I had to read the instructions, how was I supposed to know what to do?"

That's even more lame than I thought it was going to be.

Nigga fucking what?

Every single good game happened by chance, not skill or craft.

That theory is bullshit considering that we'd have a shit ton of better games if you look at what we have now because the odds would be good. If it were true than we'd have a shit ton less to play than we already have.

It's not like the food industry isn't filled with pretentious shitheads who wank themselves over aesthetics over taste or actually having filling portions

Who says the chances have to remain consistent?

I actually laughed.

That second one is literally a single bite

Sure, it's better than making another TF2Watch clone, but there's already enough arena shooters out there. Some of which are old but still hold up and have many mods, some of which are recent and don't have any loadout shit, and many that are free-as-in-freedom. Creating more arena FPS only shrinks the playerbases by splitting them onto a million games.

Brilliant!!
Bravo Pitchford!

Is that cherry tomato filled with cat vomit topped with some grass and with bread crumbs on the plate?
what the fuck were they thinking

Those are not very good at all. I enjoy high cuisine, but it really pisses me off when they charge a fortune for simple shit like that.

He's referring to the rocket jumper, a launcher that deals no damage to yourself or anyone else

It definitely looks like the game is going to use the exact same card system as Clash Royale. There's 6 slots for chests on the loot screen and keys. So I'm betting it's going to have the same chests open after X amount of hours or you can open them immediately with keys that will cost you real money.
Also I just had my first match where I totally dominated and ran into my first meme spout. At 10 kills with not death the announcer says "You mad bro?"

The fucking irony.

wew

I'm not defending them, I'm pointing out that if you willingly go to one of them expecting to be well fed you're a fucking retard.

Does the people that make these decisions don't think?
Are they vegetables?

Even the card game/FPS from Warframe's developer didn't have the gall to copy the card level system from mobile games.

This just in increasing your player/account level gives you damage reduction.

I didn't think any modern company could fail anymore

quality gearbox gameplay

Why would anything nice ever happen?

This at least is in the realm of possibility.
Maybe if we believe hard enough we'll make it happen

...

That makes no sense. So for the first few levels you can use your weapons and play the game like a shooter than after that your playing knock off UT4 with kingdom hearts chain of memories gameplay limitations?

this sounds like a recipe for disaster
BRAVO RANDY

That's because he did.

but they have no money to fund it

If I'm going to give Gearbox the benefit of the doubt, what I think they were thinking is "As you level up cards you gain damage, to counteract this why don't we make so you get damage reduction as your account level increases so that they go back to the initially balanced form of the game."

Also I've unlocked most cards and I'll give you a general breakdown of their usefulness. Remember that all guns have infinite ammo and don't need to reload. Also I haven't managed to get a single gun to alt-fire, I think alt-fires need to get charged by hitting the enemy a few times, which makes them pretty useless overall.

Weapons:
Bit Blaster: A run of the mill assault rifle type gun. The spread is awful. Probably the worst weapon in the game.
Rocket: It's a rocket launcher. There is no splash damage from your own rockets so feel free to spam. Best weapon in the game.
Shotgun: Can one shot when you're point blank, usually just going to whiff half the pellets and end up running like an idiot with the long downtime for the reload animation. Probably the second worst weapon in the game.
Tesla Coil: It's the Lightning Gun with infinite ammo. A good secondary weapon to clean-up, but not a good primary.
Railgun: It can one shot with headshots, but does about half health on bodyshots. Ultimately it's just a rocket launcher without splash and slightly more damage.in this game. I think it gains more spread as you shoot, but it's not that noticeable.
Detonator: It's a grenade launcher with infinite ammo and no need to reload. Probably the best weapon in the game, but I don't have it yet so I can't confirm that.

Then why stat mechanics at all? RPG's are about increasing number values, but they want their arena shooter to have consistent damage numbers so higher level players aren't unstoppable? If this system was PVE and didnt have the damage reduction it'd be logical; but then it'd be borderlands without the "infinite" guns. This is reeking of wanting to seem like its being clever but this is just bad game design.

...

Onto the various other cards in the game.
Adrenaline Rush: If you stay airborne for 1.5 seconds you get either some max hp or move speed that lasts for 8 seconds.
Air Jump: Gives a double jump with a 5 second cooldown. One of the best mobility skills.
Bubble Shield: 2 seconds of invulnerability and you reflect any damage you take during it. It's great against new players, but against people that know that it's invulnerability and not health it's only good as a panic button.
Cinders: .You go invisible, but still appear periodically. It's shit.
Human Flame: A dash that gives 50% resistance while dashing, and when you hit a wall you explode and do some damage. I would never use it as an attacking skill and as a mobility skill it's not great.
Meteor: It's rocket barrage. The only reason to take it to get the one of two pick-off kills by camping a corridor and pressing it as your opponent walks in.
Phase Reverse: Literally Tracer rewind, there's not reason to not take this.
Recall: You throw a teleporter on the ground and then press the button to teleport to it. You can hold the button to throw down a new teleporter. I assume that like the mine it can't be broken.
Sentry: You put down a sentry and it has like a 2 second lock-on timer before it fires. It's garbage.
Vampiric: You press a button and after 30 seconds you permanently gain 50 HP and it replaces the skill with the same dash from Human Flame, expect you have 100% reduction and don't explode.
Excalibur: You throw a pedastal on the ground and after 20 seconds it spawns a sword that you keep for 30 seconds that one hit kills and makes you invulnerable.
Mines: You throw a mine on the ground that can't be broken and is invisible. Though instead of damage it slows and wallhacks.
Codebreaker: Each kill drops a code piece after you collect enough you can activate the skill to wall hack the enemy for half a second. I don't have it and I've never seen it.
I personally run Phase Reverse, anything, and Air Jump.

To force people to spend money to buy boxes and upgrade their guns to maintain the baseline of damage? I can't defend that one.

It happened, I lost my first match. And it was against someone with rocket launcher and grenade launcher.
The match was literally just waiting for one of us to get bored and push, since we both just camped and lobbed explosives to hold each other in place. I have to say since there's no ammo and only 2 health packs on every map there is zero reason to fight anywhere other than the healthpacks and even then they take ~45 seconds to respawn so it's fight when they're up and then camp while they're down.

Okay, but that's not the same thing. That's a joke/training weapon that's not supposed to be used in actual gameplay

It's one of those things where it isn't so fucking stupid your brain can't even comprehend the depths of dumbness involved, but it is so absurdly stupid you have to just sit back in awe at the fact someone thought this was a good idea.

Isn't this just Paladins?
A ripoff of a ripoff off a rippof?

The Paladins card system is closer to the League of Legends rune system than an actual card system.
This is just the exact system from Clash Royale slapped onto a 1v1 arena shooter, instead of RTS.

This is how Clash Royale is designed. You pay or grind for ages so your cards have higher level than the enemies you face and your base have higher hp as well with each account level. However this game looks like it will stand no chance against The Amazing Eternals because that game dont look p2w and have a more liked team behind it

Fucking wew, good goy.

How do you fetishize skill?

Isn't valve's garbage a legit card battle game?

No. In Warframe you still need to sink trash mods into the mod you want for it to be good and it costs tons of credits and mods to do so. Or are y you talking about something else.

Why not have all the cards just be this stuff except less shitty.
Also it seems insanely intuitive to utilize a CoM like system for this since you burn through all your attacks before having to reload your deck.
Actually they should have made it just like CoM, minus the card values, and made it so your ammo was cards and you could autistically organize them into a set deck. Like have a card representing cryo rounds followed by explosive rounds for a combo. Fuck even rip of the sleight system and combine those ammo types I mentioned with another attack card or something to make frost nova rounds.
Godfucking damnit Gearbox this shit isn't that hard to brainstorm.

Actually, you faggot, in Warframe you burn cores or copies of the same mod in order to increase its level. If you burn "trash mods" you are the one who is trash, because that costs more credits and is exceedingly slow. But uh, I think he's talking about something else.

Actually, you faggot, technicalities aside I'm still right since that's how the overwhelming majority of mobile shit works. However even including technicalities the thing you describe is still wrong because they switched to the Endo system a long time ago so you now burn mods for currency to rank mods meaning there's no difference between burning trash and burning, say, Redirections to rank a Redirection. As an aside Cores don't really exist anymore and you now just get the corresponding amount of Endo as drops.
The fact that you don't know this means you quit a long time before me and therefore get the moral victory this time…

As another aside they also added these stupid statues that have a chance spawn in the same places as faction medallions, sometimes right on top of them, and can be socketed with orange and blue light bulbs that randomly drop from crates and need to be manually picked up. All of these things can be exchanged for varying amounts of Endo or traded to other players for Plat.

gj user

I think those are just leftovers from the greasy spoon next door.

That's how capitalism works. You only lose when retards stop paying for your shit

He was spectating that match
