He's right in that a viewer shouldn't have to give a fuck about shit movies, comics, or shows. If you watch a good movie then it gets followed up with a shit sequel or there's a distant prequel that's ultimately irrelevant, then why should it matter? The writer however does need to care about maintaining continuity and story for the good of the overall series.
