What you have with Universities is socialism/communism working within the bounds of a (mostly) capitalistic society. Now, the system has been set up and been going on for too many generations for people to really see what happened or even know that it is happening, they can just feel the brunt of it.
So what happened, exactly?
The student loan.
Yep, it is that simple.
And not only just the student loan but the federally backed student loan.

What does that mean? Well, as a university I no longer need to consider my prices in terms of what a person seeking higher education might be able to afford because they can just go get a loan for it. In fact, like health insurance, it is expected that a student get loans for their education before they even start to consider taking part in the university's services. So prices drive up.
If I am a supplier of university stuff (text books and the like) I can also drive up my prices because the university is going to buy those books to sell back to the kids at an even higher price and again, it doesn't matter because from the point of view of the university and all the suppliers tied to the university, they already have their money.
In fact, they were guaranteed their money pretty much by the federal government of the united states. Remember, a student loan backed by the fed can not be defaulted on. You can't get away from it by declaring bankruptcy. It is with you for life and may even transfer, as debt (because debt is an asset lol) to your next of kin. And let us not even get into the fact that on top of ALL of that these universities still receive out-right federal grant money for things anyway.

So you see what is being played out here, then?
The University and all of its tie-ins are guaranteed paid by the government backed loans and they are using the citizens as the wallet to port that money over.
Because of the push of the idea that higher education, a degree, is a path to a better life more and more people go into universities from all economic classes, especially the middle class and the poor who are now tied down with this loan debt.
Because of so many people leaving colleges with degrees (useful or useless, doesn't matter) the expectations of the job market are raised to the point where a university 4 year degree (bachelor's degree) is needed for ENTRY LEVEL work. It is essentially the new high-school diploma. Now you need a degree, any degree, just to get a job, any job.
Now you've created a cycle where everyone needs to go to university after highschool to have a remote chance of being successful in life.
Now you must saddle nearly everyone with massive loans backed by the federal government. These loans can never be defaulted and they can just garnish your wages outright if they want to so they can get your money back.
Now you have an entire workforce saddled with debt they can't get rid of so they MUST find a job and most importantly they MUST keep that job.
The money needed to pay back the loans keeps you living paycheck to paycheck, not able to save up for anything, really.
Employers exploit this by heaping large workloads on these debt-controlled workers because if these workers don't perform they can be fired and now this person who has been made to live paycheck to paycheck has no means to support themselves while looking for another job. This also lets employers abuse employees (unpaid overtime as expected working hours is the biggest one.).

Do you see it? You are being made into an economic slave under this system. Ultimately, a slave to the state. You are being turned into a socialist worker in the only way that can be done in a capitalistic system and that is constant and unending debt.
The only way out of this system is to somehow be able to go through it without engaging in the debt. Pay for college courses outright with no loans which is what I did. I found out very quickly how odd of a case that was and saw how my contemporaries in the same line of work were complaining about being broke all the fucking time while I was able to stow away like half of my month's pay in savings.
I am living out most of the "American Dream (tm)" as it is sold to people on the front of the box and they are living the nightmare that is actually in the package.

This also helps secure a massive amount of direct government workers. Don't want to take a government loan? Sign up for the military for 4 years and then you'll have the government grant you the money to go to school. A reward for being used to secure oil and opium.

The difference between a loan from a bank (or any other non federal entity) and the loan from the government in this case is that you can not default on the federal loan. If you declare bankruptcy they'll tell you "tough shit, now go get a job so we can garnish your wages up to 15%".
The university is getting its money and you are enslaved, through debt, to the government. Under an outright socialist/communist nation it is a given, by default, that you are a slave to the state anyway so they have no need to build this mechanism to create that outcome. In a socialist/communist nation you own nothing, not even yourself. You work for the state, get educated by the state, and everything you think you own is actually owned by the state.

With a widely capitalist society you have to create that in another way. Hence the system of control I described previously. It is NOT capitalism but it is a government leveraging the mechanisms to create the socialist control.
You are indebted to the state for your "education" and as a result are stuck in a sort of slave-labor situation with a majority of jobs you enter into fresh out of college. You can't negotiate higher wages effectively because of the over-abundance of the same sort of serf labor and what's more you could just be replaced by an import (H1-B) or an export (ship job to china). So you have depressed wages and on top of that you have a massive amount of loan debt that is sucking on your paychecks leaving you with no ability to pursue ownership of things. Stuck in a constant state of renting. That constant state of renting is still a capitalist thing but the effect, the result, as far as the government entity is concerned is the same. A worker who owns nothing and owes everything to the state.

Because what are they told by the universities themselves (which are the financial beneficiaries of this system) is that the cure to your debt-slavery is to have the government pay for even more of the college! Just pay it outright! of course they'll never say that the reason why they jack up prices so high is because they CAN do it because they EXPECT to be paid by these LOANS anyway.

Oh, and it isn't the rich that are going to bear the brunt of those taxes. No. they never ever do. Because they're in that upper crust of the whole deal they will have their loopholes. Nope, it is going to be the middle class that takes that and for a very specific reason. For the same reason the loan scheme was devised they want a whole class of people they can control through money flow.
Keep you just rich enough to feed yourself and your family but too poor to do anything worthwhile to help make the transition into higher classes.

The real reason why the internet upsets government entities and even corporate entities is that it provides (or it did provide anyway) a means by which people can actually transcend into those upper classes. Where they can create ways to essentially work for themselves and be financially viable and independent. In some cases, become super wealthy. So they want to lock it down because it destabilizes their control.
Where they can't do it outright they are using the media to stir up shit to have the private corps do it for them (daily stormer and hatreon, for example). While I don't agree with the views of the dailystormer I do recognize that what happened there was test-fire to see if they could get private corps (that are now big and centralized the internet, essentially) to get rid of anything they don't like.
