Meta Horror Games?

I don't know if "meta" is really the right term here.
I'm searching for games, that don't necessarily start scary, but slowly devolve into a horror game or have sudden shift in tone,
Maybe even involving shit that goes beyond the game itself like fucking with your desktop, creating new files on your computer or taking control away from you

Irisu Syndrome. Don't google gameplay footage before you start.

...

There are few, but just recommending any of them there will basically ruin the entire exercise, since you're not supposed to know that they go into horror territory at some point.
Fuck I mean you can google them, but then again it will just defeat the entire point.
I dunno man.

Sad Satan :^)

Glittermitten Grove

The only horror here is that waste of trips. Undertale actually does technically do spooks right, playing on the fear of unknown rather than jumpscares, but it's only for one ~20-minute segment, and it's all ultimately family-friendly haunted house shit anyway. He said he wants horror.

Wew

There is one more horror in that game. The concept of Flowey.
Too bad he ditched the entire fucking character after he made the demo for "le funni skeleton pun man XD."

i don't know if it counts because they were horror games to begin with, but fatal frame 3 and silent hill 4 do something i really like with their "safe room" mechanics where over the course of the game they get more and more fucked up until they're just as dangerous as the outside world, if not more so

But the pic is bait for the "BAN TUMBLRTALE" fags

Wasn't it banned tho?
Stay mad tumblr.

like Eversion?

Even threads that talk about it eventually get bumplocked by lime.
we did it reddit

Spec Ops: the Line gets to be a pretty creepy psychological horror title throughout the later half. Just try and ignore the "too deep 4 you" meta gamer commentary.

Metal Gear Solid 2 can also be pretty damn creepy at times.

I wish there were more military/political horror games.

Take a game like Aliens : Colonial Marines. It's got the military aspects but none of the horror stuff despite being based on a film that pulled it off brilliantly.

What's the safe middle ground? A game like F.E.A.R.? Where guns can only do so much against a supernatural threat? Or how about a game based on something like Dog Soldiers?

I'd say what's better are games that can really show you how fucked up the powers that be can be. How being a soldier in the middle of a fake war can fuck with you when you get to close to the truth. How the world could be nothing but a show held up by loose strings controlled by certain groups. Things like that.. of course, I'm guessing stories like this really can't be told in vidya any more seeing as developers are so one sided with their politics. I'd imagine it would just degrade into biased lies and some "rage against the system" message. What was nice about games like MGS 2 and Deus Ex is they merely presented you with horrible truths in those worlds, but didn't tell you if those truths were good or bad. They gave you their point of view and the opposing, then it was up to you to figure out how you felt about it.

Upper cathedral ward was neat but not enough to qualify bloodborne as horror. Even Irythill Dungeon works better in that regard. Besides the beasts are arguably creepier than the kin.
t. bloodborne machine haver

Done, I cant understand people who feel anything playing the games hamfisted story. How am I supposed to feel bad for going along with the on rails story where I'm forced to do "bad" things?
I might as well feel bad for eating meat. Its retarded.

The people who feel stuff from playing these games are emotionally undeveloped.

...

This, it's a tricky puzzle game that adds or changes things in the game folder the further along you get. You might also want to try Ai To Yuuki To Kashiwamochi by the same creator. It's harder and subtly punishes you the more you fail, but for the most part isn't blatantly horror.

Beat me to it, it's exactly what OP is looking for aside from the desktop stuff.

I want to fuck spooky.

Who doesn't?

you'd better not alt-tab, mother fucker.

I'll be honest, I really wish that that game had just stayed a straight-faced parody instead of turning into an SCP Containment Breach clone. At least it would have had something unique going for it if it had.

Yeah the fact that he did fucking nothing after the intro until the end was a huge disappointment.

Also, I'm pretty sure there wasn't any file fuckery in the final version. The demo came with a PDF manual, and when beat it, that manual would change. If you went True Pacifist, he would disappear from the final page of the manual, replaced with a simple message: "Don't get too cocky". If you went Genocidal, the entire manual would be replaced with images giving the message "That was fun. Let's finish the job.", except for the final page which still featured him, but with no face.

I never played the payed version of The Stanley Parable, but I remember that the free version was kind of meta-horror.

It's hard to get spooked by horror games when you want to fuck the monsters or the haunted house or your own fear.

Arx Fatalis had this bit in the Dwarven Mines where it briefly turned into a survival horror game.

Anyone have a good LP of this game. In the mean time I am going to fap to a ghost.

Is that still going? I know the wiki got co-opted by politically correct faggots revising the autistic lore left and right, but what about the game?

Spooky porn is what I came here for. I knew someone would bring this game up.

The game itself it fairly good. A lot of trial and error to get things done right, models and animations look stiff (I didn't mind this), plot is, well, SCP foundry. But overall it's a good spoopy game.

I've played i before user, you don't need to sell me on a free game. I'm wondering if they're still updating it. When was the last time they added something new? Did updates stop before, after, or during the SJW takeover of the wiki?

Ghosts, slimes, and shapeshifters. You can fuck them in literally any part of their body. Though some monster girls are even better for not being fuckable anywhere, but instead having a specific unusual place they can be fucked. exhentai.org/s/29ae450ea6/527596-1
Anyone know that gallery about the semi-ayylmao monster girl with the gem on her forehead and the mouth on the back of her head? I think she had octopus tentacle hair.

Dog Soldiers could have been made into a fun AVP style game - imagine a co-op multiplayer with soldiers & marines duking it out.

I'd buy it.

One day your DS has a new game loaded onto it that has no name. It looks like a cute little dragon warrior 2 style jrpg.
But as time goes on its clearly broken and corrupted, so you get rid of it.
But its back the next day, with a message. You are cursed, you are going to die.

You have to explore the game and the world outside it to survive 'Nanashi no Geemu' - The Game with No Name.

What does japari have to do with this?
Also nanashi no game is neither unknown on Holla Forums or relevant to this thread, it's pretty damn upfront about being horror.

Try nomad soul.

Would this count?

Who said I felt bad? At its core the story is just about a man who wouldn't stop and kept trying to do the right thing but went crazy in the process and did the wrong. I can't even remember if it was the writer who inserted that "gamer narrative" or some random youtube personality spouting out a theory. It's more or less what the story of MGS V should have been.

It has meta scares, but as OP stated, meta doesn't really express what he's actually after.

Some of the Myst games can shift into an unsettling tone in places. There's something else I'm been trying to remember but it may have been some random gamejolt thing or something.

isn't asking for games like that essentially spoiling them for yourself?

The first two Doom games can be scary on the first playthrough. The level design is sprinkled with traps and secrets that fuck with your expectations. Some segments are bright with somewhat upbeat rock music. Others are very moody with dark rooms, strobe lights, and demons that you can barely see but can hear very well.

that's sadly the problem. But how else will you ever find stuff like that except for random recommendations?

Spec Ops: The Line has the slow devolution you're looking for, down to a T. Some of it is meta, but nothing like fucking with your save file or desktop.

Pic related or not?
I tried the first couple of levels some weeks back but figured the game's brand of physics-based gameplay wasn't my jam. I might reconsider if it has a tonal shift later though.

Nope, its just a fun little snek game.

You're supposed to feel bad because your'e a fucking retard incapable of distinguishing the character of Walker from yourself, even though walker got an extensive backstory and to clarify confusion you control him form the third person perspective.
Story is very simple, about a glory hound who jsut can't stop in his quest to be the hero doing everything wrong, an edgier story than in LA Noire where phelps was comparable in his quest to be a hero but at least Phelps accomplished some good things while on the police force.

In an interview dev sarcastically said, to mock journos and gaymurrs offended by Walker doing bad things and the game addressing him about it "if you don't like it you should've turned off the game"

The opposite would have been surprising, but that raises the question - why post that picture in this thread?

I've seen several posts across different threads with an off-topic snake pass image attached. I suspect he suffers from autism.

...

Careful, you're starting to thread into autism territory.

Once something designed to invoke horror has a qt representation it loses all of its terror qualities. Which is why there should be a series about a heroic artist who defeats monsters by drawing stylised, cute versions of them that replace their current forms.
