Everything about Cruncyroll as a service is bad. Anime is by far the easiest kind of video to compress yet they over compress everything to the point it looks blocky to save on bandwidth. The translations are also subpar given the dual release. They often shit out something terrible and fix it a week or so later if you're lucky. Worse part is it killed the fansub scene, very few good fansubs groups remain. Most rip their material from cruncyroll and re-release it. Almost no one hunts down a decent raw, does a fan translation, type sets, encodes, and distributes true fansubs anymore. There are maybe one or two groups that still do it the old way last I checked.

A part of me wishes that maybe they'd be doing this sort of thing for older good but under-appreciated shows to give them another chance. On the other hand, I'm not sure Crunchyroll's viewerbase ought to be given more of a vector into the fanbases for those series. Regardless, I suppose services like this are more prone to stick with newer shows for marathons, or at least ones being brought overseas just recently, to capitalize on them being new or even ""first time in English" series, depending on the circumstances. But I don't use them, so I'm not sure if a marathon like these are par for the course, or if they also do so for older series.

There's a handful English anime dubs that I'd say are actually pretty damn good. Hellsing Ultimate, for example (which also has the benefit of being set in Europe anyhow). But yeah, usually Japanese audio with subs are going to be better quality, though of course, even then it's prone to varying quality with subtitled translations, both from official releases and fan-subs.

I meant more for anime that had already been brought over in English years back, but hadn't gotten much attention, either due to how they were distributed here (compare airing on a regular channel, to a special subscription one like ADV used to do), or bad airing frame with more popular competing shows. They could likely ask whoever's holding the rights currently to borrow the series for marathoning, if they don't already have distribution rights for it to begin with. I'm just saying since usually, unless the original English version was considered very poor in voicing or script, usually shows aren't prone to see an official redub, so they'd be stuck for better or worse with what already exists for those.

There's certainly an issue to be had with anime, and games as well, reusing the same English voices over and over, as well as pigeonholing them into particular voices/tones (despite some offering a decent range of what they can do) just because a prior character voice they did was popular and that's the only voice anyone hiring them wants. But there's also the issues of poor direction and poor budget. Poor direction can make otherwise decent voices flop at properly expressing the scripts for the characters. Poor budget can result in a "you get what you pay for" dub, as I recall was the issue with the Wii game Arc Rise Fantasia (something about whoever was in charge of money only budgeting a couple grand for the English voicing). Granted, that latter point's not to say that voice actors ought to be paid as much as if not better than the developers themselves, or whatever the VA strike has been about, but merely that money involved is still a factor towards effort put out (and there ought to be balance).

And then there's cases like Prison School and Dragonmaid up there where it's not just the English voicing that might be a problem, but also the actual scripts the voice actors are having to read. What should be a proper translation, hopefully as accurate to the original in script and voicing tone as can be managed, just becomes a vector for whoever's translating or editing for it at Funimation (or other studios) to push their liberal agenda onto the viewer.

That's still around, kind of, it's been split up into multiple companies, but the most pertinent one would be Sentai filmworks, Tokyopop's kinda still around, they've been trying to get into a resurgance for awhile, but it hasn't really happened yet, lets see, there's also Viz, and Ocean Studios, which has been working with Viz on some shit, and a random jap card company to produce a dub to this really boring card game, what's it called, Cardfight vanguard, i think. Crazy thing is they for whatever reason only air it on youtube and skip certain seasons for no reason, other than i guess they weren't paid to do so. A big up and comer, i think, would be Discotek, they don't really do dubs too much, they generally tend to pick up licenses and do reprints with dual audio whenever possible, but they have dipped their toes into that shit, with the Lupin series, hiring an original cast for a movie, then getting back a good chunk of the Geneon cast for a TV series.

for games, aside from the normal bunch you have Gaijinworking designs, but they've been slipping HARD, like, aside from the script shit that makes weebs do an autistic screech without fail, they can't even produce a decent sounding dub to save their lives, if they even include a dub at all. The insulting part though is that they still charge people 5-15 bucks more than retail for that shit.
