I've studied Japanese for 7+ years so I actually play all my games in Japanese nowadays.
Loved Splatoon1, loving Splatoon2.

Notes on Splatfest so far:
- Lots of other non-Japanese players on here.
- Your colour scheme is not fixed! While Splatfest still has the cool glowing ink effect, each team has two different possible colours for more variety.
- Good GOD pressing B is gonna take some getting used to. I've already died at least twice from accidentally bringing up a map when trying to jump. And it doesn't help that the twin guns make you do a weird little dash instead of jumping.

Nice! We're on the same team. I'll try not to drag you down too much if we end up playing together.
My kanji skills are still appalling, but thankfully Splatoon you can get by with just the kana. It's interesting seeing what's different from English (like Pearl and Marina's catchphrase.)

I was an S ranker in Splatoon1, but having trouble getting used playing with Joycons…I wonder if I'd be better off if I invested in a Pro Controller. They're so overpriced tho…

Because Fire Emblem's changes were incredibly stupid and changed the meaning of entire scenes, as well as cutting out content. Whereas Splatoon generally just has different names for things (because they were retarded Japanese fish puns that were replaced with retarded English fish puns.)

I have the controllers mounted on the dog-thing, so it doesn't feel that different from the original - except that Jump is the wrong button and I keep finding myself looking down at the controller to see how we're doing, and being briefly confused when I see a derpy dog instead of a map.

Maybe I'd be less confused if I tried the controllers seperately.

Already used to the jump button change, they did it to keep jump button close to right stick. (On WiiU right stick is above buttons, on Switch it's below)

Oh shit - correction: I may be wrong about the multiple ink colours. Turns out I'm getting in a lot of same team battles: looks like Team Rock has a LOT more members than Team Pop.

Yeah, it's a change but I'm getting the hang of it after several dozen battles in a row. Even the map isn't too bad - I wasn't sure how they'd handle Super Jumping, but aiming at your teammates using the motion-controlled cursor is pretty good. It still feels less fast than the touch, but with practice it gets easier.

(Lying down, it's a bit problematic, as it seems to not want to let you calibrate the gyro to such a steep angle)

I'm pretty baffled by it.

Thinking about it, having an Icecream vs. cake splatfest during summer is poorly designed. Assuming people choose their answer based on what they actually prefer, instead of their favourite character, it's only natural to prefer something nice and cold in the summer heat. The season will probably influence a few answers.

Team Ice Cream wins Europe. I couldn't even find a Team Cake party to fight against, I just got another Ice Cream.

I'm just astonished they're able to make it that good. Granted, the Splat2 drawing tool is a huge improvement from the Miiverse one - notably because it has a "zoom" button - but the fact that the screen doesn't let you use a stylus is a massive handicap. (Someone was saying earlier that tablet pens might work, but none of my Wacom ones do.)

Also, it's a damn shame there doesn't seem to be any way to save people's art. You can still "yeah" them, but since there's no Miiverse integration, there doesn't seem to be any way to actually go back and look at the pics you favourited.
Which sucks. Someone did an amazing picture of Pearl wielding a roller in a Dio-ish fashion, with "Rock n' Roller da!" speech bubble, and I'll never see it again.

At least there's lots of excellent Japanese fanart outside of Miiverse, too.

The matchmaking seems a bit weird. I thought it would be that situation in Japan - literally more than half the matches I fought were against other Rock teams - but it turned out the split was pretty even.
I'm guessing that ping might be factored in to matchmaking now, which would explain why so many of my Japanese splatfest matches had obviously non-Jap players. (If someone's account is named "Japan", they're probably not actually Japanese.)

If so, that would also explain why the game's performance seems to have improved so much since the first one. I didn't get a single disconnect the entire splatfest, and Japanese players have stopped teleporting all over the place and shooting me through walls or after dying.

Also, tip about the twin guns in case anyone tries those and can't figure out the pattern: it's shooting. If you're holding down the shoot button and you try to jump, you'll dash instead. Anyone (like me) who used Aerosprays in the original and is used to hopping around constantly while shooting is going to have a bad time.

I'm sure they'll be back - for the demo they just stuck to the most basic of basics.
You'll probably be most comfortable with the Charger - feels like it's been buffed a bit since the original (as if snipers needed to be any MORE dangerous), and the special move is a bit like the gatling (if the gatling could shoot through walls).

I liked splattershot Jr, but .52 was my go to for splat zones and rainmaker, .96 gal for tower control. Shit can two-shot and has crazy range. Loving splatoon 2 demo so far, dualies are cool but I need to adjust to rolling. Hoping that there's a dualie set with splashdown on release. Also, if you push buttons or waggle the sticks when sitting in a lobby you can fuck with the music.

managed to reach around 1850 but then i decided to re-learn charger. ended at about 1760

is allright. my main concern was that the thing was soo small, my hands would hurt after playing a long time. also if the gyro was gonna be bad. but in the end it was allright.

the skatepark is a real fun map. also i really like nu moray towers. the zip lines add a ton of options. you can even hide in the little nuts and get the drop on people in the center arena. the other two maps are pretty nifty but very basic and small.

the dualies are real fun but the missiles leave alot to be desired. either way, its a pretty mobile kit and i like them. the fast fall is really good on moray tower (and i assume any tall map.) and the water balloons are good for climbing and killing.

the thing i dont like is that damned charger special. its not very good. you're more effective just shooting people than using that stupid shit. it dont ink good and it dont kill good even if you can aim the stupid thing (by throttling the trigger). i want the killer wail back.

I'm not really digging the music. Part of what made Splatoon so great was the tunes, shit was great. The splatfest song is alright but doesn't compare to the originals splatfest, the plaza music is complete trash and irredeemable, even the plaza isn't as nice as the original. I've only heard 3 songs but they were all shite. Other than that I don't see how it could be worse than the first, although I feel some of the maps may be too big.

didst anyone jam thy roller? they seemed a bit uncomfortable. maybe the starting set was too technical for what most people want out of a roller. how are those curling bombs used? ive been hit square in the face with them without anything happening. they seem really difficult to get practical use out of aside from maybe quickly painting a path..

Curling bombs explode after a delay and not beforehand. I thought you could hold them to "cook the bomb" a little, but I may be mistaken. I mostly used them to get around or bounced them around tight areas I was about to leave as a lingering hazard.
I tried the roller out a bit towards the end, I personally felt like the new vertical flick had he same killzone as the old sideways one, but now I can paint up walls and make getaway lines. I can still jump while sideways flicking by starting a swing and then jumping, so I can still get just a little height to paint an area rather than a line, but it's hard to remember to do in the heat of battle when all my instincts make me jump.
The big thing I should have used more was Splashdown. I wish I had remembered to jump to teammates in advanced positions when I got it charged so that I could get more out of it, but still, it was a very fun special

I tried the roller. Only conclusion I came too was "they suck unless someone else uses them"
I can't hit people for shit or even get close to them, but everytime some other fag has it, he spams jump and dive to come out of hiding, splashing me and then diving again for safety, giving me no time to shoot him.

Also the sniper rifle disapointed me. I though I could overshoot people and still damage them with the falling ink, but that failed everytime, I guess only direct shots are damaging.

In the end, the only thing that felt comfortable was the assault rifle and even then, the worst part was the control scheme. That motion scheme really doesn't help the game at all, I wish we had Wiimotes to aim again…

I turned my nose up at the roller until I started playing ranked. Before then, in turf war, I would frequently use n-zappers and splattershots. This last weekend, I was drunk for two days and played nothing but tower control. I was shocked by how many kills I got simply by mashing ZR constantly. I was borderline passing out for maybe two hours, and it was the most no effort experience I've had in the game thus far. I'm pretty new still, though.

I really can't stress enough how easy it was to use rollers when I was drunk as fuck. I seriously put maybe five hours between the days doing ranked, and my kill.death ratio skyrocketed, despite being surrounded by extremely experienced Japanese players and being extremely drunk the entire time.

Please user. You're making me feel terrible. I kept being shot by other people since I couldn't close the gap fast enough, while also being killed by rollers that came out of nowhere or spammed dive+jumpattack.

couldnt you detach joycons? or do you mean to point with? you wouldnt be able to turn as far with the old sensor system so flanking would be even deadlier which might be cool in some senses but it might slow things down too since you would have to be more cautious as well as throwing 180 dives out the window.
but maybe by now they would have cooked up something more advanced that worked in 360 degrees if they chose to go that path.

the impression i got was that they were trying to push the roller as a technical specialist weapon instead of just a short range clobber stick that they have the reputation of. although, its worth noting that the 'starting' roller was a little complicated set to play with in the first game too. i dont fully understand rollers, but it seemed to encourage a zoning play style as it had suction bombs and a killer wail. both great tools to force an opponent to make or pay for a mistake, or just to get them the hell off the lawn for a moment. but at least thats somewhat intuitive, and you had more control over how you used suction bombs because they were thrown through the air unlike these battle roombas. maybe theyll get a buff for a larger explosion radius at some point? although suction bombs are in the game and they probably still have the large explosion trait to call their own. in the weapon select you could look at a list of sub and special weapons. i shoulda took screenshots but you guys have probably seen it before in a video i havent watched or whatever.
and the splashdown had such a huge delay and small radius for a point blank aoe that it just wasnt all that scary, and while i could see it being used to finish off a cornered opponent it had such poor range that it seems it would be faster to just smash them with your roller. i dont think it does anything to tie this weapon set together. quirky sets are inevitable and okay but as a starting weapon its just so weird.
is there something about this one that i dont understand. can you aim or otherwise influence the landing zone even a little?

i have a feeling splash down isnt going to be very popular in general outside of certain maps in certain modes or tower control because its just not scary enough to stand on that thing. id bet we will see a lot of use in teams with voice communication and it will be glorious.
or maybe people just need to get used to checking the map and super jumping to allies. it would really start shaking me up if i didnt know if someone was jumping in to die or to punch my shit out.

Fast turning speed could come from the right stick, while precision aim could come from the aim reticule. That'd likely be a perfect scheme.
Hell, Link's Crossbow Training was just moving around with Nunchuck and aiming with Wiimote and it was really fun even in the open areas.

Dualies is another I don't actually see the point. Juking side to side seems usefull but as your oponent shoots you, he'll cover the area around you with his ink so you'll be juking right into enemy ink, reducing your mobility.
It seems quite counter-intuitive, which is why I stuck to the default assault rifle. Not gonna trade firepower for a gimmick ability I can't use well enough.

I ended up having the best success with dualies and roller. Granted I'm not in a group of serious friends to play with so I'm shit. For dualies I have to master the dodge roll and kill. They seem more like an ambush or counter attack weapon to me since you have to keep still while the reticles are synced. Pretty sure once you get attack up dualies can kill like anything else.

For roller I was verticle splashing and riding ink to get to vantage points to paint. I also found out you can still wide splash and jump by firing while on the ground first, then jumping. Seems the wide splash's damage power has been nerfed in favor of verticle splash which seems to be the main gimmick now.

Will we see sloshers and brushes again?

its not supposed to be a safety dance. if the dash isnt enough to save yourself or get the kill then thats just how it is, making it count is up to the player. youll have plenty of time to wash their ink away if you kill them.
if it were just outright amazing in all aspects it would be impossible to play against and the only thing you ever see.
in the first game we had splattershot jr which was largely the same but without the dash and some crazy people still found themselves a niche with that weapon. dont think of it as something to 'fix' that weapon type, but something to give them more opportunities. dont get me wrong, youre absolutely right in that its suicidal and the enemy is at an advantage if you dash into enemy ink but the option is there.

i dont think splatoon 2 will have attack or defense up badges. there was a menu to check and read up on stats and the only things like that i found were special weapon effect+ and blast defense.

thats good news, the amazing coverage it provides was a huge part of their worth as weapons in the first game.
so what does the long splash feel like when you get used to it? a huge delayed slosher?

im curious what you did to make the default roller work. are you the bomb curling world champion? i know in the first game plenty of people just 'got' the roller and i never did, i was half passable with the carbon roller which i imagine anyone could claim.

The Jumping Wide Splash is extremely useful if you use it right before a Splashdown. Even though it's no longer an instakill, it inks up the area all around your opponent and prevents them from being able to get out of the blast radius fast enough.

Dualies are absolutely lethal at close range. Probably a lot of people didn't realize that as it's a counterintuitive way to use a gun, but if you get shot by a Dualie at point blank it's pretty much instant death. When combined with the ability to dodge roll forward to put yourself right next to your enemy, they're pretty efficient murder weapons. And yeah, great for ambushing.

As someone who "got" the roller in the first game here is my problem with the new roller.
-runs out of ink way too fast.
-flicking ink only covers only a small section
At that point I dropped it in favor of the regular rifle, a weapon I never used in the first game, and went from 1600 to 2000. I mean I just kicked ass. It was weird.

Long splash kinda feels like a slosher, but it's weaker and less concentrated. Still covers enough distance if you're going to rush. Still it'll suck if the vertical splash is going to replace the slosher.

Which is why dualies are ambush weapons. We'll see them more in use via ranked battles. At least until a long range variant is revealed.

I noticed rollers don't have as much ink as they used to. Or they go through it quicker. Which is why I used vertical splashing more than rolling. Rolling seems to only be good for insta-splatting other players.

sometimes kali is seen as a preserver of nature. it wouldnt be too far fetched given the setting.

< the space I'm jumping into isn't a bottomless pit, but instead has other enemies in it, who splat me the normal way
