I don't think any part of BOTW or Xenoblade X was procedurally generated, there's too much detail and the environments are clearly engineered to prevent you from ("officially") getting certain places until you acquire different abilities and upgrades.

The games are layered between procedural generation and hand crafted experience, I didn't really think that was the difference between these games though, I think it was Breath of the Wilds approach to open world design which gave it it's strong reviews, also the fact that it was obviously better than HZD so reviewing it lower or equally to it would kill the journo scam.

I don't think I've played another open world game where I had to actively navigate and not just follow the marker, and the way that Breath of the Wild expects you to jump off the beaten path and carve your own, it's just good. The open world is the gameplay, not just a space where fragments of gameplay exist for the player to find.

I guess you had to navigate in Morrowind, but it was more about fighting the horrible map design and the low draw distance.

as someone who has done both many times over for pen & paper RPG campaigns, I can assure you that randomly generating a pattern and then crafting the world around it is so, so, so much less work than creating it whole cloth, and you end up with a more natural, organic end result doing it that way too
