Even in the tribes that weren't horrid miniturized military despotism, and you weren't a slave (yes, muh tribes did slavery too), you were mostly "free" to live out some short, wretched existence as a dirt farmer until your inevitable murder in some tribal feud.

And I wasn't defending Roman imperialism, I was saying the one good thing that came out of it was the death of European tribalism. Remember, Spartacus chose death in Rome over "freedom" in tribal Northern Europe.
