The relationship between Russia and the EU is already shaky, and those former Communist countries are really just authoritarian capitalist countries now - or whatever word's been thrown out to describe it. Their model is shit, and Russia is poor and hostile. Both already participate in international imperialist ventures, they just aren't as powerful as the USA yet. They wouldn't serve as a political counterbalance, just competing empires.
