Post war immigration in Sweden started with a need for labor which also drove demand and expanded the economy. Likewise these immigrants also propped up the ruling class thus allowing them to remain in power, thus continuing the cycle (just look at the history of the Swedish Social Democratic Party).
Once again, liberalism and liberal democracy was and is the problem. Without porky there is no demand for immigrant workers because it inflates the labor pool and puts pressures on the wages of existing workers (when is the last time a majority of the working class in the west voted for mass immigration?). And without a liberal democratic system there is no need to import third world voters to stuff the ballot boxes.
