Psychiatric disorders

What is your take on the huge number (1 in 3 I believe is the statistic) of westerners who are diagnosed and treated for psychiatric disorders?

My sister has depression and personally I have severe adhd. But my take is that much of the time these disorders are just a cheap way to treat people who aren't able to keep up with the demands of capitalist society. I think we've always existed.

I work maintenance and cleanup at a local pet shop and it's something I legitimately enjoy. But with this job I'll never be secure financially. I went to college for a short time but since I went off the meds, I wasn't able to handle it. I hate taking meds. I just don't feel like myself, like a part of my brain is turned off. I don't want to have to get used to it. Why the fuck should I have to? Fuck that

My sister is a very interesting case. She's a neet because every month or so she claims to really feel the blues and she doesn't want to go to school/work. She was actually the one who convinced to stop meds after she saw what prolonged use did to one of her friends

Anyways, sorry this is so long, but I feel that in society that doesn't put production ability above all else, maybe i'd be allowed to be this way y'know?

tl;dr I've read only the first
1. I believe disorders became simply more apparent and recognizable, but im sure they also increased in frequency to some degree.

Capitalism itself defines what insanity is to begin with.

I wish. Whenever he crashes a thread like this he causes massive asspain to everyone.

And you all should read Lacan.

Capitalism is responsible for depression, anxiety, paranoia and many other conditions. It generates these conditions and treats them as a random malfunction, rather than recognizing its source in the system. People become depressed when unemployed because they are disrespected and feel no purpose in their lives. They are not wrong to feel this, because that's exactly the condition of their lives, but we prescribe them medication to keep them compliant. Many paranoids are entertained in their delusions because these delusions make them manipulable and can lead to anti-socialist politics.

The arrogance of porky makes me want to kill

...

You wouldn't allowed to be that way, you'd not even be defined as abnormal. Capitalism attempts to severely limit how you live your life and only the accumulation of capital can free you. It's horrible.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest will never not be relevant.

Good!

I honestly kind of like this society, as long as you're a good little prole nobody really cares about you.

t. diagnosed with SPD

>And you all should read Lacan.
No.

generally yeah

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that Capitalism is wholly responsible for those things. It definitely is a major contributing factor to their ever increasing prevalence though.

It is in the interest of big pharma to generate larger number of diagnoses for profit

The spectacle has done it's part in making mental illness acceptable and - to stupid tumblr types - hip

Excessive drug use/medication can cause damage that will then 'necessitate' more drug use/medication

Pay attention of course, to who funded what

Being skeptical of 'psychiatric disorders' isn't a bad thing, but I am not versed well enough in identifying actual mental problems because I haven't done what everyone else should probably do.

I have dysthymia (incurable, constant, low-grade depression) and an anxiety disorder. While in high school, I very frequently experienced month-long bouts of severe depression and severe flare-ups in my anxiety disorder. I left high school last spring and have been a NEET since (in part due to the fact that I have very limited transportation options to work, but I hope it'll soon be warm enough to walk) and have noticed this is the longest I've gone since I was 12 or so without being depressed, and my anxiety has gotten far more manageable.

Obviously this is anecdotal, but the school system was designed to acclimate children to labor in a capitalist society. It's stressful, alienating, and restrictive. I'm very confident not only does capitalism create mental illness producing conditions (*cough* poverty *cough*), it exacerbates mental illness (whether any given person would have it with capitalism or not).

There's also PTSD from war and prostitution, the backwards family structure and restrictive gender roles that don't teach men how to handle their emotions in a way that turns them to violence (which fucks their whole family up), and black urban communities terrorized by gang violence due to the lack of employment opportunities (but the necessity of money to survive) and police violence for the private prison industry, among other examples.

Capitalism is a danger to the mental health of the proletariat.

How do you know your brain is malfunctioning and not seeing the world as it actually is?

You think that's a very insightful question, don't you? For future reference, that kind of shit can be pretty unhealthy for severely depressed people to hear.

Also, I'm unable to prove that, but plenty of reserach indicates depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. My dad has it, his mom has it, and likely their parents and grandparents. My dad is a bright person, as am I, but so is my mother and half a dozen comparably intelligent people I know and I, the one with a family history, am the odd one out on being fucking bummed all the time. So I'm pretty confident my chronic depression is genetics-based rather than some pseudo-intellectual, self-important conjecture that I'm just wiser or more aware than everyone else.

what is an appropriate chemical balance in your brain

I'm well aware of that. If I didn't have family I'd have killed myself already because I'm quite confident the world is just a shitty place. Hell, I'm not even sure the idea of the brain malfunctioning is compatible with the existence of free will or qualia.

One which will allow me to get out of bed without significant struggle in the morning, to shower at least every other day, to enjoy things like I used to, to read a book for more than 5 minutes, to not go into a panic when confronted with some vague threat of everyday germs. I could go on. That's more from the perspective of the difficult times but dysthymia and low-grade anxiety is my status quo and I have a hard time imagining life without it.

It probably isn't. But we know for a fact one exists, while the other has been a common point of debate for centuries, if not millennia. I'm not good with philosophy.

fuck yourself weakling

that doesnt answer my question

what is an appropriate chemical balance in the brain

whatever Chad/Beta Pajeet have is considered ok in Porkydom

I'm not a scientist, but there's a chemical balance that allows people to do basic, everyday tasks without getting exhausted. That's what I want. I don't have precise numbers or ratios to give you, only outcomes of those.

scientism

Probably the best way to look at it is that the medication actually makes the world a better place for you.

Jesus fucking Christ. Alright you fucking faggot, you've convinced me, I'm going to read Lacan.

Actually the only thing any of us can know for certain is that we are self-aware. We can't trust anything we perceive, but be can trust that we at least exist.

I'm going into psychology, and this is a perfect way to sum it up. It's become the individuals fault that he can't keep up or meet expectations of capitalist society. That type of thing in turn changes people's self-concept. Everything reflected to them shows they do not belong if they don't meet expectations. That can get to people who have a high need to belong and have no real familial connections because their parents probably had the same issues.

Yes, good worker. Do your therapy and take those pills! *oink*

these are accurate posts.

This. Psychiatric disorders won't all magically go away if crapitalism does, but will probably reduced greatly. Also it's in Porky's best interest both financially and in terms of neutering at resistance, to diagnose everything, and call anything that would reduce productivity a mental disorder.

I'm depressed and suffer from ADHD. Actually think ADHD is the main problem. When I went on medication for it my whole life started to "work" and I felt functional and semi-normal. Now I can't get my meds anymore because I tested positive for weed. ;_;

There is a well understood physical basis for many psychiatric disorders, although diagnosis is indirect and subject to bias (allowing influence by capital). Other than that bias, the main concern is more whether different neurochemical profiles actually warrant altering by pharmaceuticals, or whether the perceived positive life impact patients report after taking these drugs are only due to being able to better perform under the pressures of capitalist society. For instance, traits associated with ADHD underwent positive selection in the early history of human evolution because it allowed individuals to be able to better detect changes in their environment (the arrival of predators, etc.)

Regardless, suicide rates have been going up, so any method that has the potential to lower a patient's risk of suicide should be pursued. And unless you're the accelerationist type, there's no reason to oppose treatment of 'psychiatric disorders' that would gives workers a better chance to hold down steady jobs (except for the toxicity of the drug, of course).

No.

...

Hahaha no. Just because contemporary psychiatry is a porky tool doesn't make alternative psychology legitimate, any more than medicine for your body being a porky tool doesn't make alternative medicine legitimate.

These anti-science anti-medicine people are healing crystal tier and should be walled.

The world is shitty, and capitalism has a lot to do with that, but by putting all your problems on that you're keeping yourself a victim and preventing you from helping yourself. We have to learn how to maintain our happiness and mind even in a world that tries its best to take it away from us. I've found that Stoicism is very good for that and I'd recommend to all comrades to read the classics like Mediations and the Enchiridion.

You're just blindly agreeing with what the hijacked scientific community tells you is the truth, when the truth is they cannot prove that chemical imbalances cause mental illness, they cannot test for chemicals in the brain and objectively say which are low/high, they cannot explain why medication works sometimes and sometimes not. They'd rather sell you medication then actually treat you and when the meds don't work or you can't get to them you become powerless. Treatment is possible, so don't give up comrade; look up CBT and REBT, there's many books for just applying it to yourself. Here's one that was helpful for me and a lot of other people thepiratebay.org/torrent/7952789/Mind_Over_Mood__Change_How_You_Feel_by_Changing_the_Way_You_Thin

In socialism or capitalism?

Painfully reminiscent of how most critics of Stirner don't actually read Stirner, it seems you've failed to read even the Wikipedia page on Lacan.

Start with the PDF I posted. The best place to start.

I do CBT. I have OCD. That's my anxiety disorder. I haven't been on meds or seen anyone since I got out of school, since I've been doing well enough that I can manage it on my own.

My OCD was so bad, before I was diagnosed, that I was too petrified of food/drink to eat for a month, and relied on ER visits for dehydration until they admitted me. It was debilitating. I was so nutrient deficient that I easily could have died if I waited just a few days longer. Even then, the doctors weren't confident I'd live. Medication has done wonders for me, and gave me the support I needed so I could tackle it on my own. I'm not "blindly agreeing" with the scientific community when I have proof it worked for me; the before and after is staggering. I wouldn't have kept buying if it didn't do anything for me.

Neurotransmitter tests can be used to test for imbalances. Mountains of credible research has been conducted proving mental illnesses are material differences between the brains of mentally ill and mentally healthy people. In some cases, the brains are structurally different (ASPD, for example).

This is the case for nearly all medication. You can try it out with pain medication. I'm certain you already know what works best for the different kinds of pain you have, even if the drugs are meant to alleviate the same kind of pain. You can ask your friends and family what works best for them. People respond differently to drugs, and the root cause of a shared ailment might be different.

Please do some actual research and don't let your paranoid skepticism dissuade you from believing valid studies. Oh, and the profit motive is not much different between selling drugs and selling self-help books, if you think the motive alone discredits something, even if it's proven to work.

I know they were making money off me, but goddamn, their product worked and I desperately needed it. No different than food, or housing, or anything else. It sucks, but there's nothing I can do about it until we seize the means of production.

Marxism causes mental illness. It leaves it adherents paranoid, single minded, obsessive and neurotic, no longer being able to process information without framing in it their singular obsession: capitalism.

The rambling posts on this board, and the longer and even more paranoid posts called "theory" are exemplary of this.

Be it capitalism, jew.ry, the illuminati the patriarchy or the whites, the pattern of paranoid degeneration follows much the same pattern regardless of the subject.

Psych threads and Lacan spam remind that this place is relatively stupid, just not as stupid as most other places.
Not everything is capitalism's fault, good lord.

I'm glad it did, and it seems you used it as it should be used, as a step to real treatment. But for most it is the only "treatment" because they're they're problem if chemical and these chemicals will correct it. And it does nothing to cure them or to free them, and the pharmaceutical industry would prefer it to stay that way.
Source? Did they use one of those tests on you to diagnose your OCD?
Obviously the brains are different since the mind is different, there's no disputing that, but the real question is which causes which. If it's simply just failing at the genetic lottery and the cause is chemical, then why are the illnesses proceeded by trauma and why does talk therapy work?
That is true, but there's usually an explanation why it does or doesn't work.
The is a huge market for scammy self-help books, but I wouldn't put those on the same level as books written by the creators of the ubiquitous therapies that the books teach.

lol
