I keep hearing conflicting opinions on what I'm supposed to use to repair the control sticks.
Am I supposed to use Lithium Grease or can I make due with vaseline?
What sort of string is best? Wool or simple nylon?

Buy a third party replacement part and swap it out. It's pretty easy to do.
The original stick wasn't exactly made out of Nintendium, but can I really trust that chinese plastic shit?
Well i believe using Lithium Grease is for preventing any damage if you have a good stick. If you have to put some in the white bowl looking thing.
The one I bought feels fine.
I'll bite. I could always go to a flea market and experiment with some other chewed up joysticks.
I had a 3d party control back when the n64 was out that was higher quality than the base controller. They' re out there. I can't fine a picture of mine. It had 2 prongs instead of the usual 3 and was crystal clear, no fog on the plastic.
found it, it's the mako pad
Jesus christ I remember that pad from my cousin's house
What a dream
The Superpad's decent. The stick was made with metal parts so it wouldn't degrade as quickly.
Whatever you do, don't replace it with a Gamecube stick or anything that looks like one. I thought it'd be a cool idea and tried it, and while it functions and it's a much nicer stick, it's extremely sensitive. Every move in Smash Bros becomes a smash attack no matter how gentle you are, and F-Zero and Podracer are near impossible because you overcorrect like a madman.
Supposedly the Hori controllers Japan got played like a dream. Too bad they're expensive to get now
It's great for Star Fox.
I imagine those are a nightmare when trying to play Virtual Pro Wrestling 64.
No, because the thickness or other things of the 3rd party sticks widely varies. This causes problems in games, such as being unable to quickspin in Zelda. If you find a good one, then go for it.
Which superpad, btw? The "Plus", or that green stingray looking one?
Use your own, natural lube
Superpad Plus.
Well, I guess we've at least figured out why the N64 has three grips like it was made for some kind of three-armed alien.
Turns out we were those aliens all along.
The replacement sticks I'm aware of need a mod board to function properly. I'd know more about the process, but having a day job kills my motivation to fix anything.
Someone post the turtle
Really? I used to see them all over ebay. Fuck, just like that GameCube GB Player pad they made.
