Japanese PC games and cool things you didnt know existed

So apparently there is a Windows 95 port of Clock Tower and it's really cool. What are some other cool Holla Forums related things that you didn't know existed? Cool Jap PC ports/games thread.

Oh, I really didn't know Clock Tower had a port for PC, I assume is a fan made port?

damn man, heaps of games got ported back in the day. I know metal gear games were ported but they were such ass ports it's better to just emulate em. Same for resident evil I think.

anything improved in the clock tower port?

Nope. It's official and even has a fan translation. Posting the Mega link I found of it mega.nz/#!Oh4E1B7B!9cbdclrtgEVhBtzI6O9WGzOqX4sQlMqFhCpn5hqvjvc

why do people like to pretend PC gaming isn't as big in Japan as it is in the west?

Because it's not. Don't kid yourself. I love Jap PC gaming but they are a country with a low power grid with one of the highest degrees of computer illiteracy in the world (excluding African and Middle Eastern shit-holes)

its about as big there as it is here. I'd be fascinated to hear where you got your ideas from considering that I actually regularly talk with Japanese gamers and plenty of them play on PC.

Anecdotal evidence is not evidence. Every normalfag and their mother plays PC games this day and age over here. For the Japs not so much, they're all still using Windows XP.

Ecco the Dolphin Fixed and Enhanced Edition:

web8.orcaserver.de/ecco/downloads/games/index.php

your anecdote is better than mine because?

no really, give me some proof. Less than 1% of all PC gamers use WinXP. You have no proof, you're practically parroting kotaku because they posted an article about how kamiya doesn't know/care about steam.

Sophie wasn't actually the first Atelier game on the PC.

Alone in The Dark trilogy was so huge in Japan to the point where almost all horror games are it's clones.

false. don't you know everyone in japan was running msx computers and sharp 68k's until windows xp was released, then they upgraded to win95.

There aren't a ton of notable releases for PC from Japan, that I can think of at least, eroge aside. 99% of Japanese games I play on PC are porn. I might just be ill-informed though.

They were ported to PC-98.

And yes, they run like shit. The FM Towns ports ran decently though.

There's tons of doujin (not just porn) releases, and there isn't really a big mainstream PC market outside of stuff like FPS, RTS, MMO in the west, multiplatform titles which have more recently involved cheaply done Japanese console game ports due to the reliability of steam. There isn't really a big dedicated PC market period except RTS and MMO and moba games.

The scenes are pretty similar, just different content from regions.

The PC vidya market in Japan was stagnant until like 5 years ago until Steam started gaining steam there what with home consoles choking on their own vomit this generation. Most notably because of Softbank essentially holding a monopoly on retail software distribution there. Falcom of Ys and Legend of Heroes fame were one of the few game companies that did PC releases and they had to stop simply because SoftBank decided to drop their distribution deal and it wasn't until XSEED's recent releases that they started doing PC stuff again.

animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2016-05-23/.102406

oh, that kinda of hell where games poorly run only on specific hardware

...

I wouldn't wish something like that on my worst enemy. Even with a big smartphone or table it's still uncomfortable as fuck to type shit out.

And then that backfired since XSEED couldn't fund day-and-date PC ports for their localizations, so a NISA-translated Ys VIII became a thing.

But hey, at least it's on PC! Nevermind Joyoland would've ported it anyway, like they ported MoC and 7.

That's even worse then knowing how they love playing Skyrim on PS3 in 3rd person. Disgusting, but now we know why Nintendo did the Switch. They're fucking married to mobile devices over there.

At least the Switch is quickly becoming the Vita 2 and is region-free, honestly I'm already in love with the damn thing - but that's just me.

how do you know when it barely has any games right now

They have been on the internet through their phones well before we have been in the West. For a long time they used emails to contact each other through their phones. The simplistic design of their image boards and other sites is partly because of the phone limitations.
The Japs had a real problem with PC. They were very slow at using them in offices too, though of course that has changed. It might have the most to do with image. After there is a set idea of what something is for they don't like to change it.

I could make a joke about that being the point, but nah Fate/Extella and Touhou: Genso Wanderer are both coming to Switch, Senran Kagura is coming to Switch (though that was already on 3DS), all the (((indie))) games that used to come to Vita are coming to Switch now… etc.

I might be jumping the gun a little, but it seems promising.

ok, let me ask you in 2 years whether Switch became a Vita 2 or WiiU 2

Fair enough. I feel like anything is better than the Wii U though, and I bought one at launch. Obviously I do not learn.

This outta be good
Capping this post for future reference

welp time to emulate

Admit you were wrong you coward faggot

This smh.

And before that most of them were using PC-98. They hang on to technology over there much longer than we do over here. Hell the Famicom was only discontinued in 2003.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Honesty if I could fax shit to my family members I would but none of those niggers even have landlines anymore (I'll be damned if I ever carry a mobile phone, fuck that shit unless I can get one of those dank Jap flip-phones, but even then I'm poor as shit)

so this is the only relevant line in the article

remember when I said PC gaming in Japan is about as big as PC gaming is in the west? I was right.

you're betting a lot here

most interesting line in the article:
the japs were right.

No you're not. Almost everyone has a computer here. Are you this fucking retarded? I passed highschool by changing the grades in teacher's gradebook and even I am more math literate than you are.

I had no clue Mega Man Legends had a PC port until a few years ago

Shit nigger, I still need to get around to playing that game. Is the port any good?

Is that windows 10?

At this point is probably better to emulate that old games as they probably won't run properly on a Win 7 or something like that. And that is without even including the resolution and even possibly control problems.

8.1 Embedded. This shitty laptop doesn't have drivers for 7 or Ganno+Linncucks. HOnestly it's not bad to tell you the truth.

What do you mean there are no drivers for W7? Is such thing possible?

My Stinkpad kicked the shitter so I'm using this underpowered HP piece of shit. Has good battery life though and it's too weak to overheat like the rest of their products do.

Not really, emulating it lets you have better controller mapping options.

MMX1-8 having PC ports is also not that well known ports are all shit outside of speed autism

S3&K has a Windows port but it's CPU timed so it's not playable on modern PCs

Its music is also inferior to the Genesis version.

I don't remember the name of the game, but there is an official porn Megami Tensei published by Atlus for Win95.

They upgraded to Windows 8 a while ago, user.

...

does it fix taking damage from running when you aren't being chased, forcing you to slowly walk everywhere so Jennifer doesn't get oneshotted the second Scissor Man pops out?

Suikoden 1 and 2 got PC releases in Japan, China and I think Korea as well.

MGS2
I knew about MGS but I though the sequel was PS2 exclusive, same with Silent Hill 3.

Probably Sonys marketing, they've been trying the same fucking thing with Ace Combat and Nier Automata as examples.

what? how? too many old people?

He's not fucking with you; the OECD found that Japan has one of the lowest computer literacy rates in the 1st world.

I've read the article where you got that quote (but I can't be arsed to find it back).
Some weird shit there, don't recall the reason for it but I think price and tradition played a role there.

Basically, Japan is at a point where companies have a hard time hiring anyone that understands Computer. Even sending a mail is more than university-tier for them. Only people that actually use computers are enthusiasts for them.

This is also one of the reasons that casual markets especially for phones are quite the success there or why consoles get more attention than PCs or even why the Switch is what it is and why casual grindan MMOs are what they prefer in general.
Japs are pretty casual when it comes to videogames.

There's no way this is real, right? The japs don't resort to this to install a mere OS, right?

Well, it's the right icon. And it says "Internet Explorer 11" so you know it can't be a very, very old version of Windows like 3.11

Holy fuck. Reminds of the time I copied Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis from one PC to another using floppy drives. Damn thing was 11 MB, so it took about 9 copies.
Later, when I found out about Winzip and I could do the same with just 6 copies, I felt like an 31773 haxxor.
Being 8 was fun.

How can I unsub from your blog?

You forgot your face.

I dont know why but the fact that this obscure piece of shit has an even more obscure pc port is kind of fascinating.

The playstation/saturn ports of Wizardry 1-5 got Windows releases. Its the best way to play Wizardry, and is in English as well. Good luck finding a download for it though.

Chinese using bootleg JP disks actually.

Iirc this was only very recently discovered, the 3DO version was never thought to have had a port of any kind.

That isn't really proof that PC gaming isn't as big there. It just means more people browse facebook on their phones than on their macbooks. You have to find a study explicitly dealing with PC gaming and clearly defines what it considers PC Gaming to prove your opinion as fact.
I can't say if it is or not, but what I do know is that they have clubs formed solely to develop PC games, conventions to distribute those games, retail stores dedicated to PC games, some of my top favorite PC games are Japanese, and my physical PC collection is about 40% Japanese games, none of which are VN's. I am inclined to think that PC gaming isn't as popular there as it is in the states, but is certainly close and significantly healthier.

hey ever hear about this obscure japanese gem called cave story xD

firedrop.com/df183f02fb895e46

:^)))))))))))))))

why she look like jennifer connelly i thought she was supposed to be a nip

There's this cool free game called Dōkutsu Monogatari. Apparently it was made by only one person!

If you exclude doujin games and visual novels, then what is left of Japanese PC game development? Not a whole lot. The doujin scene is great and all, but it's hardly comparable to American PC game development in size and impact.

Ikr? I'll probably be sticking to windows 10 for 15+ years at least…

Western ones are superior

You mean European
Barely any Americans making PC focused games nowadays.

If you exclude indie games and visual novels, then there isn't that much for American PC games, and the only thing those games impact is your wallet.

There are the Lodoss Win 95 games, and there's also Giten Megami.

Also Shadow of Memories had a PC port

Also that Legend of the Galactic Heroes RTS.

Normally I would agree with what you said but as far as MGS2 is concerned it is better to play the PC version than to try emulating it. Someone even released a fan patch that fixes stuff to coincide with the game's 15th Anniversary.

Yeah, SH2, 3 and 4 had PC ports and for some reason the last SH game didn't. Not that anyone wants to play that crap anyway.

Whatever happened to those yellow label releases of Resi that came out on PC a while back, were they ever released outside of Japan?

Also, PC gaming was kinda popular in the 90s, there were ports of tons of games like MGS or Persona. Then cellphones happened and normalfags stopped using desktop computers, just like in America. Most college students barely use a shitty laptop to write Word documents and make Powerpoint presentations. But all entertainment comes from consoles, cellphones and even tablets. All those devices that could be replaced with a single computer, which allows you to do way more too.

Starcraft, Myst, The Sims, Doom, Quake, King's Quest, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Diablo… and maybe some of these are actually Canadian or something but the point is that there's been a lot of major PC games developed in the US.

I don't think people were commonly using desktop systems to begin with.

When there were tons of PC exclusives we didn't get any ports.

Now that we get all the ports we barely get PC exclusives (that are not indie).

It was way better before, now we're just playing console shit everywhere.

It's a joke some guy made and posted on Twitter. He also made a fake Windows 8.1 cassette install. Japanese link to the Twitter pics: internet.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/yajiuma/620204.html

...

Because that is certainly a good measure of current trends and popularity.

Problem isn't popularity, problem is quality since the majority of people in this godforsaken globe have low functioning brains.

I was just listing famous games that came to mind, and Japan has barely anything similar anyway.

Jesus christ, people are really hell-bent on pretending that Japan is as much into PC gaming as America.

MSX was a flop in Japan, it's why Microsoft feigns any connection to it and most of its relevant releases are from Konami and Hudson.

I did not know that it wasn't all that successful in Japan. I just took it for granted that it was based on the titles from Konami. I know it was quite popular in Europe.

It did alright business in Europe, but that's the same market that ate shit up like the ZX Spectrum or the Amiga.
