It's a decent tool when you need to "teach" the players things or dump exposition either through a tutorial or throughout the rest of the game. I won't say it can't be lazy, but if done right it's actually pretty good. Take Bayonetta for example.

FFX didn't just instantly drop you into combat in a large area with several doors to pick from immediately. Yes, it was poorly done and would have been better to just start with Tidus before the game, but at least the player knows which way is up so to speak.
1 - there's plenty of ways to drop someone into the middle of gameplay without the player wondering "What the fuck am I supposed to do now?" Dragon's Dogma comes to mind. Drops you right into combat in the shoes of someone you don't know in a situation you don't understand, but you don't feel lost because of the level design.
2 - you can fuck off to cuckchan with your hate of Japanese games.
