Didn't some Nintendo rep said this was a spiritual successor to Punch-Out? and Nintendrones are eating it up while shit eating casuals either don't care or want more of the same shit games that aren't from Nintendo.

ARMS is the only Nintendo-developed Switch game they've shown that I have absolutely no interest in. Just not into boxing games; didn't like Wii Sports Boxing nor did I enjoy Punch-Out.

The interesting part about ARMS is that it appears to be the only Switch game announced that is strictly for TV play only. You might be able to play it on tabletop mode, but handheld is a no-go. It begs the question as to whether or not there will be games that will be handheld only (actually I think there's one on the e-shop already, some rhythm game you need the touch screen for). Would it surprise you if, say, the Pokemon Switch game forced you to be in handheld mode?

With ARMS, I can understand that there will be some games that you simply can't take with you on the go, but how long will it be until third party developers start abusing the various modes of play?

Yeah, or just implementing a touch-screen based mechanic that completely removes the option for you to play in TV mode. Pokemon games have always been very "social" games that made it necessary for the franchise to stay on mobile consoles. Trading pokemon, walking around with the pokemon pedometer thing, local battles, etc. If (or when) a pokemon game hits the Switch, they might make the decision to make the game handheld-only, since that's how the franchise was meant to be played.

That's just my speculation. They would definitely have to put in more effort to remove that option, and it would piss a few fans off, but they would just rationalize it with whatever new game mechanic they invented or just push for the social aspect of the game.

Arms can be played with regular controls, motion controls are not the only input method so yes it can be played in handheld mode.

Pokemon Switch won't force you to run it in handheld mode.

I wonder if Nintendo will allow companies to make games for one mode specifically for anything other than input limitations.

The introduction of a new character doesn't interest me half as much as finding out about being able to customize which arms you bring in to battle. It makes it feel like a spiritual successor to Custom Robo, which could be great. But I'm not going to preorder it, I'm going to wait and see if it's any good before I decide whether or not to get it.

I would not be surprised if ARMS gets a massive info reveal Direct next month similar to what Splatoon got in May 2015 and that is still one of the highest viewed Directs.

I think there was an interview confirming the team had been playing a bunch of 3D brawler/fighting games. Can't remember if they mentioned Virtual-On or Gotcha Force as one of the games they played.

Just like on its reveal, it's still a multiplayer game on a platform with online play behind paywall and extra joycons for local multiplayer costing a ton, so I have zero interest in it.
