Well it is pretty nerve wracking being put on the public stage of discourse and you're trying to defend a complex series of economic and political theories while your opponent can just gas light, accuse you of socially ostracizing thing, and smirk knowing most audiences agree with him by default.

I think it's because the most effective tool propaganda has is little urban legends that are known to be untrue but "close enough" to reality that people will just accept them. Same thing as "the ocean is blue because it reflects the sky" or "you swallow 8 spiders a year in your sleep". No facts to back it up, pretty easily debunked, but for some fucking reason they proliferate throughout the public consciousness, and unlike internet memes, they seem to stick around.
