Horizon: Zero Dawn

I beat this a couple days ago. Can we talk about how fucking awesome it is?

Here is a list of things I liked (not at all comprehensive).


>Aloy being a female is used very, very well. They don't shove it down your throat or try to make it a token thing about her. She is an amazing person and her femininity is really well-explored. I absolutely LOVED when you talk to Arad and he wants to like you like he liked Ersa, and you get to call him out fairly but firmly. It didn't feel like pandering, just Aloy being Aloy as a girl. Games have a hard time if writing that kind of thing correctly, and HZD just NAILED it so well.

>The fact that the more expensive weapons get new ammo types to make you truly powerful is an excellent addition. It gives so much more incentive than just a stat boost. It's also nice that the best armor and the best weaves greatly complement each other in the late game.


>Removing the turret off a Reaver and then decimating it with it never gets old.

>Shell-walkers appear pretty boring and docile but once you engage them they are really intimidating. I liked that.


>I ended up loving Elisabet, absolutely HATING Ted Ferro (fucking piece of shit!) and grudgingly accepting Travis Tate. And NONE of these people are someone you ever directly engage with. Just amazing.

This is hardly a comprehensive list, but man I loved this game. Very much worth every penny.That doesn't make it perfect though. Next post is my cons.

I'd say the above are only nitpicks, really. This game is a solid 9/10 for me. I had a lot of fun playing it, and I'd say it is very good.

Honestly the boss fights are the greater creatures like the Thunderjaw and the Stormbird. There are a couple side missions that feature more powerful versions, and I believe one story mission with a truly powerful thunderjaw. Also the Deathbringers, if you ever run into them.

I'm glad you're getting so much out of the game. I only had like 2 or 3 story missions left by the time I hit 50.

Hmm other games similar to Horizon? Not really. It does a lot of things with its setting and story that feel very unique. That alone is worth buying it new IMO. However, on top of that it has genuinely good sidequests, and it saves the best of those for the late game, which was nice. The combat is tight and pretty tactical. I would DEFINITELY pick this up over Destiny 2. That said if you're a social gamer and that's why you'd want to play Destiny 2 then I can understand why you'd want to play it. I am not at all a social gamer, as the aforementioned autism makes it hard to be okay with having to adapt to another player's pace. I like well-crafted single-player experiences, and I'd say HZD did a great job with that.

I am in general a sucker for the open-world genre. By far my favorite game in that category is the Witcher 3, which if you haven't somehow played, you really, really need to rectify. I got FFXV for Christmas and I thought that was pretty good, but definitely has flaws. I'll be interested to see what that's like when I come back to it.

I did pick up and get Dying Light the Following Enhanced Edition a few months ago and had a pretty good time with it. The story is pretty fucking awful and I hate the main character's voice actor (he wasn't good as Chris Redfield in RE5 and he's not good here), BUT the world is a lot of fun to get lost in.

Bloodborne was another game I recently played through for like the fourth time and I still love it. They added a lot of NPC summons so boss fights are much easier than before. I did also get the DLC and that was fun, but it coulda been better.

I also replayed through Dark Souls III for the second time, and had a pretty good time with it. I did a playthrough with the Dark Blade and it's honestly stupidly OP. Makes for a pretty easy playthrough and I actually liked the character quests way more in that one compared to other Souls games.

That's what I've been playing recently. I'm a bit of a poorfag at the moment. Right now I'm playing through FF7 with mods and it's a lot of fun.

It's a shit game no one gives a flying fuck about. Everyone (and by that I mean the paid shills) stopped talking about it two weeks after it launched.

I pity whatever moron fell for the hype and gave Guerrilla money thinking he would justify his purchase of the PS4 this way.

It matters to me because I've seen other open world games create their own societies through using different speech. A good example is the Trolls in the Witcher 3. They are, in my opinion, fucking hilarious because they're dumb and they talk pretty funny. It gave them a lot of character. But in HZD this was managed to be done with human characters, which I don't think has many good examples at all in other games. In most games I've played everyone seems to be pretty similar, as far as having a culture. I thought HZD did a really good job of managing to not do this. That's the best I can tell ya.

Alright man. I understand after seeing what BioWare does with ME:A or so many other games. But for me HZD was the first game in my memory from a western developer that presents a female character well with a lot of depth. I thought Lara was decent in the 2013 Tomb Raider, but I think she lost a lot of depth in the sequel. I feel like HZD took that a bit farther.

Hm. Well, early game your options are very limited in different ammo types. As the game goes on with each better bow you get you get another kind of arrow. The sniping bow starts with high damage arrows, that are good for fleshy enemies and some machines, then you get arrows that make it easy to tear off different machine parts specifically. THEN when you buy the best tier you get arrows that will cause machines to fight other machines if they take enough tick damage from that arrow. This added on top of being able to override machines as you unlock them through side areas gave me a lot of options. I like that.

I will concede I just used the first word that popped into my head. Like I said, stream of consciousness. Really what I meant is that as you progress and get better armor and weapon options the enemies get less difficult to take on, although I'd say even at the endgame half of the enemies can still kick your ass if you're being lazy. Some are just much better at it. One of the great tank ones, I doubt I'd ever have been able to take down if I didn't get the ability to tear off turrets that are on it and turn it against it. But I think with enough time and effort you could learn to take them down even with the base stuff. Essentially what I'm saying is that the enemies aren't locked behind gates at any point where it's just not possible to fight them, except for one enemy type that only shows up in story missions, but the game explains that pretty well IMO.
