Yakuza Games

Been playing Yakuza 0 without having never play any of the Yakuza games before and I feel realised how much I was missing out. Other said that you don't really need to play the previous games to start out but I feel like I'm left out of all the references and the little details. So I've been trying to get Yakuza 1 running using PCSX2 but can't seem to get the settings right so anyone mind sharing?

I'm also interested. I started Yakuza 0 before Persona 5 came the other day, so obviously that got pushed to the backlog (though it's definitely next on the chopping block right after Persona)… but I'm thinking the first Yakuza might be a good idea to get out of the way first, since otherwise apparently going back to it is pretty hard?

I've been wanting to finish Yakuza 1 before I get Zero but it went into the backlog because of it not working properly on PCSX2. But after playing Zero I felt like it was a mistake not playing 1

I guess if all else fails we can just play Kiwami?

How does Kiwami differs from the original?

There's going to be an English subbed release of Yakuza 1 called Yakuza Kiwami in the summer so you can experience the first story with better gameplay when it comes out. It's also been mentioned that Sega wants to remake Yakuza 2 and port the other games to the PS4 meaning that the entire main series will be on the PS4. It think depends if Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6 is a success. Yakuza 0 has seemed to have grabbed the west's attention so we could see the series start to do well over here at last.

It's in the Yakuza 0 engine, with the same combat as 0.

Would that be a good thing? I know I like zeros combat style but is it a good thing to replace the original's gameplay? I can't compare with the originals since I wasn't able to play it.

I kinda regret not playing the Yakuza series back in the day now. Also, anyone got settings for Yakuza 1 for PCSX2?

I don't know, I'm just making up my mind from reviews I've seen from the likes of HyperBitHero and Yakuza Fan because Yakuza 0 is the only one I have played. One of the problems (if you can call it that) I've seen with Yakuza Kiwaki is the Majima anywhere system. This appears to be optional to the main story so it can skip it if you want to but you lose out on getting the Dojima fighting style. The other which comes off as a grind is the system where bosses can regenerate their health and the only way to break this is to have the correct heat moveset. I know I will be avoiding getting the Dojima moveset as I already got that in Yakuza 0. It's a good fighting style but the main three are good enough for me for Kiwami.

On one end you never got to experience the series at its start since future games improve upon it in every way. On the other the combat controls are so shit compared to Yakuza 2, the english dub is practically so bad its good tier at times, really the only thing its got now is the soundtrack being better than Kiwami.

He did nothing wrong

It is good in theory, 1's combat is extremely rough and clunky compared to any other game in the series, even Yakuza 2 which is 10 years old still holds up great today, 1 doesn't.
But for me, having more than his classic style (the Dojima style in 0 for those of you who just started the series with 0) kinda breaks the immersion, but in the end I had so much fun switching up styles mid-fight in 0 that I don't really mind it.

I like how he changed his tune after finding out that Kiryu isn't just some power-hungry prick.

It's because Kuze has too much pride to be completely sucked into the whole power politics. He still hates Kiryu for smashing his pride, it's just that he also highly respects him because he's a stubborn ass like him.

That and his two boss themes really solidified him as my favourite character in 0 (and I feel that's saying something since it's got so many fun characters).

Embed related, this track and the fight it plays in were so good.

Not only that, but along with his pride he has honour and this is the other reason he respects Kiryu in the end. Kiryu is prepared to do the right, honourable thing rather than just do whatever is going to improve his standing and power in the underworld, Kuze did the same when he started to go after Kiryu. And well, to be honest 0 also shows how Kiryu's personality changed from some young cocky prick to the yakuza saint he became in the later games.

How the hell do you do "protect the civilians" quest properly? I'm trying to complete the stadium jumper strut but it's insanely hard because whatever moves you do it only focuses on one guy. And by the time you're focusing on the other, the one lying down gets up and starts beating the civvy up. This shit happens with miracle too. Fuck shit

I remember doing it easily with the Slugger style, try that.

How do you get that style?

Its Majima's baseball bat style, you get it early on as him. On the plus side there's no rush, you can do side quests any time you want.

I don't really know what you mean by

I played through the first one using PCSX2 with no problem, put basically everything in Emulation Settings at defaults, just change your resolution. Go to Config/Video/Plugin Settings: use Direct3D11 (Hardware) and change some things like FXAA if you want.

The first one I emulated without trouble… the second has a serious ghosting problem. It looks like I'm playing with my glasses off.

I think I remember having a similar problem, and using those settings solved it, it was an issue with the scaling, did you try with those settings ?

Playing through Yakuza 0 now myself, and I'm getting really put off with all the memes and internet slang that's being tossed around in the side missions. I get that they're supposed to be more light-hearted and silly, but holy shit does that break immersion and just feel cringey. Who fucked up the translation that bad, and is this a problem with the rest of the franchise? I mean, maybe it wouldn't even be that big of a deal in later games set in a more modern era, but it's all the fucking worse since the game is set in the goddamned 80's.

Also, I just finished a side mission last night where you have to stealth your way around a bunch of judgemental women in order to buy a porno mag from vending machine for a little kid. Good times. I'm still smiling from that.

...

Sega did the translation themselves.
Sega will put whatever they think the Gaijin want into Yakuza.
How do you think they made Dead Souls?
"Hrmmm, what do the Gaijin like this week?"
"Ah ha, Zombies!"
I did like them taking the piss at Dead Souls in the Not!Micheal Jackson substory.
I have only played 4,5, and 0 so I have little more experience than you.

Ah that one. It doesn't work that well for me since it's so damn slow and I get stuck at that nunchuck combo while the goons just up and attack the fuck while Im there still spinning the bat

There have always been over the top silly shit in the Yakuza games during sidestories, but 0 is the only one where they put actual memes in that I remember. I remember they quoted Yugioh Abridged series during the finance king substory. There's also one substory in 4 where you meet an otaku and he says that 2Ds are better than 3D women.

I'll give it a shot when I get home. I used some settings which worked, but IIRC they didn't look too great.

I did it with the breaker style. Just stand on top of him and start spinning.

There's a side-mission in 2 where you get a text with '1337speak'. It's aged about as well as you can imagine.

The breaker moveset is OP as fuck. Just get Majima spinning on his back and watch the enemies fly everywhere. The speed you move around and the speed you hit enemies plus the fact you're on the floor makes you practically invincible. I used to think the nunchuck baseball bat was OP until I spammed that breaker move.

While Majima has some incredible movesets the mad dog moveset is a bit shit, plus the heat move for it is repetitive to watch.

How do you get the breaker moveset? I'm already past the part where majima accepted the hit at the hawker stall

You get it a little bit after that part.

Keep playing the story.
You unlock the first three styles just by progressing the story.
Stick with that hostess shit, you want Majima's fourth style.
Nothing is more fun than playing through the last couple of group long fights and bosses as the God damned Mad Dog of Shimano.

Select software mode. It's not rocket surgery.

Forgot to ask earlier, are there alternate costumes in 0 and if so how do you access them?

The mad dog moveset is underdeveloped though. If you could switch out the mad dog moveset on the fly like you can the others then it wouldn't be lackluster to use as you can then use the other styles to build up heat and then switch to his run attack in mad dog mode. Switching between style or consuming something that fills up your heat meter isn't a solution because it breaks up the flow of combat.

You need to complete the game first to unlock a new mode before you can use alternative costumes. I can't remember what the mode is called off the top of my head.

I would just pirate on an actual PS2. It's a ridiculously common console. Can't be that expensive. I haven't checked.

I just got a new computer, so maybe I should test the emulator again, but on the old one it was absolute shit. At least it was 7 years ago. Has it really changed?

Basically Yakuza 1, but it plays like the newer games, therefore it's a different game, therefore you should play both.

Just fucking play them all. Learn Japanese and play the Japanese exclusives too. Unless you hate fun.

It's Premium Adventure.

I beat it a few days ago so I have access to that mode, just checked. Thanks anons.

I feel the same way about that too, and god damn, it shouldn't be that hard to reference American 80s slang/lingo and implement it into the translated script.

Finished the game months back, but seeing the ending made me tear up a bit

You can also do all the side shit and challenges you didn't do in Premium Adventure, then when you feel like you're done, if you want to you can make another Premium save and start a Premium New Game on a higher difficulty. Kiryu's and Majima's levels and every item including reward items transfers to your new game and you can do all the side shit again if you want to.

Stupid question but how do you start one of these? I started one with only the dance battle quests to do (and, subsequently, Amon) but I'd love to leisurely redo some of the others.

Still need to finish Yakuza 5. That freakin' game makes Witcher 3 look short…

Have you started Premium Adventure yet? If you haven't, you can use the Clear Save you got from finishing the game and go right into Premium New Game, if you have, go to one of the business clubs depending on which character you picked (Real Estate or Cabaret) and you can create another Clear File with your any progress you gained in Premium Adventure. After you've done so just go back to the title screen and start a Premium New Game using the file you've just created.

I already started it, yeah.
So, make a new save file in the "hideout", then? Thanks.

...

What do I have to do to finish maxing out Haruka's trust level in Yakuza 3? I'm a third of the way to SSS and she doesn't seem to want to do anything around Ryukyu or Kamurocho.

Does the JP version of Yakuza 0 on PS3 have ENG subtitles?

Like Metal Gear Solid the best way to play through them is release order

No

So, unless I speak moonrunes, I am forced to get a PS4 in order to play this?

No there are walkthroughs

That hardly counts.

No and there's no Asian English version that I know of (God knows I looked fucking everywhere to import it, but I couldn't find it).
