No, it's got portals that enemies come from when you get close so you can technically anticipate most encounters, and for the latter, it depends on the location. Field portals can be avoided, but if you enter a dungeon room with portals, you're stuck until all the portals are opened, and the monsters killed. Admittedly going in with two Twinblade characters might have been a mistake. At least Natsume still had Thunder Coil, which helped with the dark types.

I have an idea for you. Give .hack//Sign a try. It's a prequel anime that started airing at around the same time Infection was released. It's a hit or miss series too; oddly for a vidya oriented anime, there's not that much combat, but rather a lot of character dialogue and interaction (which is, or WAS, and big draw for MMOs), sets up some good background information and world building for The World R:1, and has really, really good music. The characters and their dynamics with each other were also of interest. I watched that first and it drew me in, and I feel that my experiences with the games are better for it.

It's useful for both trying to find a higher quality image, as well as source series/artist/character.
