Ugly Games

Are there any games for you guys that are just too "ugly" for you to play? Anything like art style, animation, music and other none gameplay related stuff that just turns you off it to the point you don't want to continue even if the gameplay is fine?

team buddies
psychonauts
oddworld
gta games in general
half life games

i need to think of more, these are just out the top of my mind.

...

I find it hard to play games with unappealing protagonists. There was a sequel to Bubble Bobble but the MC looked like a complete faggot and he wasn't a dinosaur so I hated it.

Almost everything by Platinum, and the old Viewtiful Joe games too.

No man's sky. Ugly graphics that also lag as hell.

nah, change 'bad graphics' to 'unweldy controls' instead and then i've got quite a handful of examples

LA Noire
I hated it when it came out and I hate it now

Huniecam Studio.

Butcher and Super Time Force ultra I dropped because they look like puke

Literally any pixelshit platformer.

Keeping in mind, I grew up playing 16 bit era vidya.

Funnily enough, that's the problem I had with when I tried it at a friends place. I also didn't like how everything was very small.

I'm still amazed that they dared to release it in this state. I know from the start it was going to be trash but it surprised me.

I definitely feel like people tried harder with pizel art back then, shit like has gotten much more common. Or do you mean pixels in general bother you?

Risk of Rain

Anything that's a "indie pixel" game. Instant garbage.

Any early access title that uses Unity and shitty prefabs that don't mesh well with one another.

I hope you're not including games like this in that description.

Indie pixelshit is a strange mishmash of graphics from different eras, and anything with reasonable detail is a reworked asset from another game. You'll see people put games like Axiom Verge on a pedestal, yet it's made from assets ripped from Metroid, Castlevania, and Blaster Master. A chunk of these games have graphics that make Atari look amazing by comparison, plopped on top of a pastel colored, 16-bit background that took more work than the actual sprites.

I couldn't touch Oddworld or Psychonauts for the same reason. I'll also add Final Fantasy 9. The character designs were this strange amalgamation of chibi cartoonishness and semi-realistic CG that was really off putting for me.

Machinarium.

The fact that all the interactive objects are the same brown muddy hue as everything else doesn't help.

For me it's anything that describes itself as "Metroidvania" or anything that's "inspired by Earthbound".

Metroidvanias are the most overrated, overused genre of platformer ever at this point, and "Earthbound inspired" always means that it has a bad attempt at a cartoon art style, inane writing, bad gameplay and attempts at humor that only a huge weeping 30 year old manchild wearing a striped shirt would find funny.

Thats a pain to play because the camera zooms in too close or too far and theres jaggies everywhere. Its a shame since it has loads of charm.

Its not that it looks ugly but GTA5 has some of the most obnoxious camera bobbing I've ever seen. I never had this issue in GTA4 but when you run in 5 even in third person the camera bobs up and down like your on a boat and it genuinely makes me motion sick, its even worse when you want to have fun with a jetski.

Also Battlefield 3, theres a pretty game underneath sabotaged with the blue filter, lens flares and bloom out the ass, and whenever you get shot at your screen gets blurry for no fucking reason

The ugliest game I've ever played is Sniper Ghost Warrior 3. I'd never heard of the series but a friend gave me a key for the beta so I gave it a shot, and holy moly. Insane view bobbing, the strongest chromatic aberration I've ever seen, and a helping of motion blur in there too. And with no options to disable any of it, of course. It was the first time a game physically pained me to play it. I think I managed about 20 minutes.

Wasn't there a mod for BF3 to disable the post-processing? If I remember correctly EA started banning people for using it because muh artistic vision.

Funny, I'd personally categorize AoW3 as fairly pretty but dogshit tier in gameplay.

Yup, and if I remember right the BF3 Alpha didnt have that filter. At least they learned their lesson with BF4 somewhat.

I don't like things that try to be "quirky" or that constantly break the fourth wall. Humor is okay - I don't like grimdark, either - but constantly going "Look how wacky we are" doesn't appeal to me.

This is one of the reasons why I don't like Sheogorath from Elder Scrolls or the Old World Blues DLC from New Vegas.

Nice try randy

It was ugly on release and it's ugly now. Artists are complete trash and the game looks like the inside of a crayon eating babies diaper.

the gameplay is shit too, sorry OP I didn't see that part of the post.

The character models are ugly but everything else is fine.

Any early 3d game that went with "realism" when the technology wasn't there yet.

Anything by modern Blizzard and anything that apes that retarded super colorful, particle effects up the ass, action figures with oversized and pauldrons style.

...

Runescape is an ugly as shit game, with everything looking like it's made out of play-do. I still sunk many hours into it though.

Satellite reign. I know its meant to be a spiritual successor to syndicate and judos for that (its not even that bad) but god it looks and runs terrible on my toaster. I thought games like that are supposed work decently on toasters…

Guild Wars 1 looks like korean mmo trash, so anything will look better than that.

...

I used to play civ 4 a lot. Like, a LOT. But when I eventually stopped and started playing civ 5 I just couldn't get back into civ 4 anymore because it looks so fucking dated. Even though I know I had tons of fun in civ 4 and it's the superior game, it's just too fucking ugly to play now

I wouldn't say anything but yeah the vast majority are total shit low-effort productions. Those guys aren't retro just to be hipsters or have fun nostalgia. They are retro because they suck at drawing and think they can disguise it as pixel art when there was lots of gorgeous pixel art back in the days and today's indies are just awful shit made by talentless hacks.

FF IX looks very uninspired and bland, which sums up most of the content of the game as well. It's about as "safe" of an RPG that's ever been made. Agree with Psychonauts too and there other similar games that scream "hipster" in the design choices. I always loved the look of Oddworld though, it always gave me a spacey alien feeling.

That's because back then, pixel art was made by artists. Here, have some pixel art circa 1992.

I can't handle this bait, tbh.

What the fuck this game looks better than 7/10 games released today

But Sheogorath is mad.

Deus Ex Invisible War instantly comes to mind. I loved the first one obviously but after playing half an hour of IW I just uninstalled it. The consolized interface, the inventory, graphics, visual style, facial animations, my god.

The lazy uninspired cartoony shit artstyle. It's a cancer spreading all over games since developers have discovered that doing that is a lot less effort than actually doing something decent. Examples include , , Overwatch, LoL, etc. Don't want to think of a coherent colour palette? Hate trying to get anatomy right? Loathe making shapes that aren't retarded? Forget all that, make a horrid butchered mess, and call it cartoony. Bonus points if you add zany Sunday morning cartoon "humour" to it, epic 4th wall breaking so it never takes itself seriously, and diversity (basically the three pillars of numale culture).

mount and blade is such an ugly piece of shit
still love it

As far as indie pixelshit goes, for sure, gen 4 has a ton of gorgeous games. The problem with modern pixel art is that 90% of the time it's lazy as fuck and completely misses the point. They're using it as a cost-saving measure (any asshole can churn out dirt-tier pixelshit so you don't need to hire a good artist) and playing up the nostalgia angle with "ha ha isn't this so retro XD?" despite the fact that retro games didn't look like that at all. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Rogue Legacy and Shovel Knight are a few that actually do a good job with it and are pretty good games.

I was never able to get into World of Warcraft because it was so ugly and cartoony.

Mind you, there are a lot of 'ugly' games that I'm okay with. Games with an aesthetic where things aren't attractive, that is. I'm fine with most of those.
Likewise, games with cartoony aesthetics are usually fine by me, too.

WoW just put the two together in such a way where I never enjoyed looking at anything. It was like they took this massive world filled with all sorts of different outfits characters could wear, but it was all horrible and I was just never able to immerse myself in it.
The game itself wasn't my jive either, but I could have forced myself to play it if it was pretty.

Those fucking faces, facial animations and voice acting, it makes me want to puke.

All these games like H1Z1 and The Culling, where they have these fucking unity vaseline ass lookin' graphics that just make me think "wow i bet they spent a whole day on these." It doesn't look that bad in screenshots, but in motion it definitely isn't great.

...

STALKER, in-game graphics

i dropped the game so quickly after the first area. i don't care how good the game is, it looks awful

Oh this, million times this

I'm totally with you on that, but I'm pretty sure it also helps in 'optimizing.' After all, you don't have to worry about computers being able to handle a certain graphical fidelity, if your game doesn't have any graphics to speak of.

I can't play Arcanum, it's so fucking hideous. I know it's good.

This is bait right?

Haven't run into it for games, but I won't watch Code Geass because of the art style. Honestly I'm pretty content with FEAR and STALKER graphics. I don't really appreciate massive textures and so on. Hell Oblivion only needs Qarl's texture mod to pass my low graphics standards.

It was alright in some areas but the artstyle and animations really fucked with me. Especially the humanoid and dragon units. Christ the Dwarf Firstborn is one the worst things I've ever seen done to a old idea. The hero portraits were just god awful. The monster were alright though. I'm neutral on the gameplay, I just really like that the different races could have different type of leaders. (The idea of going deus vult as a goblin is just hilarious to me)

I remember having a lot of fun with Warcraft 3, (and I still enjoy playing it from time to time) and when I finished the Frozen Throne campaign I thought "Boy, I wonder what happens next!" and checking and out WoW and thinking, "This is what they decided to go with?". And I didn't mind how warcraft 3 looked. But what really stopped me from getting into it was the monthly fee. Good thing from what I heard about all the lore rape.

I rarely seen a instance of quirk humor or 4th wall breaking that didn't make me cringe. It's the laziest fucking type of writing you can go with and it's overused as hell. I didn't like the Deadpool movie

Too bad most of those games still run like shit. Pixelshit and flash tier games needing 4 gigs of ram is unforgivable. being a example.

Nope, W101 is one hella ugly game and so is Viewtiful Joe.

That looks fucking awful and I know it would somehow manage to look even worse in motion.

Thief
Deus Ex
Most other Western PC / XBox games.

u fuckin wot m8? Machinarium is gorgeous.

The developers are faggots, aren't they?

More of an insult to the series legacy than a tribute.

To be fair the last time I played it was with that mod that triples the amount of models per unit on average so shit animations were probably less apparent. And yeah, the hero types were a cool idea but they fucked with too much shit.

In AoW1 you literally had to expand or die, and by expand I mean conquer since cities were often limited in size and one capable of producing top tier units was a proper prize. Terrain was also something you needed to account for; base accessibility, racial morals or everyone's favorite chokepoints. The walls (and even basic watchtowers) were something you had to compensate for, elemental type of any kind was a major buff, obstructions reduced the chance to hit as opposed to flat damage reduction (and the favor they show to debuff inflicting units). Goblins, for example, while being a tier 1 race still remained effective and weren't a one trick pony shut down by poison damage reduction.

Be glad you're not a WC2fag.

it's because the CRT/SVideo/Composite/RF Filters mask away the majority of pixels. those CRTs own screen door was used by developers to their own advantage.

Why are TORposters always so cancerous ?

i have lukemia you insensitive cunt

Dishonored 1/2. The characters look so fucking ugly.

I haven't played RE7 because of how ugly the outdoor area looks and how all the characters look. It all looks so plastic like and fake.

You're not missing anything. There's barely any enemies to fight besides the bosses, and the puzzles and cutscenes are there just to stop you from breezing through the game in 5 minutes. Not to mention the classic horror writing

I also really, really liked the cop.

Dragon's Dogma, 100%.

The gameplay is fantastic. Really, everything about the game is awesome, but it's probably one of the worst looking games I've seen in a while.

The game is like having an ugly girlfriend who just happens to be incredible in bed.

Must have played it on consoles.

PC version, actually.
Everything is maxed, the game just looks like ass.

Guess you've just got shit taste, fam.

Most early point and clicks are a bit much for me.

That barely applies to like 10% of the areas in the game, most of it is green grass and blue skies
Do you even know the first thing about magical realism?

Heroes of Newerth failed to succeed on the sole basis that it was ugly as fuuuuuck.

Not necessarily fidelity. Just pure style.

>>>/reddit/

My taste is fine. I'm just not blind.

Even the fields and outdoor areas are gray and drab looking, what are you talking about? Even in full sunlight, everything looks like it's delivered under a layer of ash.

I know magical realism doesn't have to be bland and boring. Why be an apologist for uninspired design?

Get a quality monitor, and then color calibrate it.

Knights of the Chalice. Even though I love the concept the prospective is weird and hurts my head to look at.

You should probably have called it "green and brown and blue" or something because there was literally green everywhere in that game.

You missed out, faggot

Have one, not necessary.

There was green, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a drab game. It was fucking depressing to look at, even at its best and brightest.

Maybe the Witcher 3 spoiled me.

No, you really don't if you think DD is "gray and drab looking". You're the type of faggot that uses those disgusting sweetFX configs that super saturate and darken the image to compensate for your shit monitor making games with normal colors look washed out.

I don't use configs. If the game doesn't look good on its own, then that's on the developer for making it look like shit. I'm not about to do the legwork for them. Get your Bethesdadrone shit out of here, fuckboy.

Post your speccy and prove you have a quality monitor, nigger.

I hope you realize this makes every other cancerous "triple a game" released from 2012-today 50% uglier, to 150% . There a millions of modern high budget trash that are way uglier than DD in all respects, but I guess they're not mentioned because nobody plays trash

It's opposite day!

Okay. Have fun sorting that one out.

Of course there are lots of shit looking games. DD is still one of my favorite games, but I'm not blind to the fact that it's still awful to look at. Thankfully I'm not a graphics whore, because the gameplay makes up for it in spades.

Ayy, called it. Anyway, go look up some color calibration guides for each of your monitors. There has never been a single monitor in history that has acceptable factory settings out of the box, and your shit-tier monitors aren't helping things. Also go enable full dynamic range in your nvidia color settings while you're at it, and note that you'll always want to tweak the brightness/gamma settings in-game to achieve an ideal image.

Even a game like DD which has a relatively neutral palette will look good when you fix your shit and are viewing it as intended.

I'll check it out.
I have a pair of Predators coming in next week that'll be replacing two of my old monitors, so we'll see how that does.

Kingdom Hearts

The mixture of Disney and FF is too cringey for me, I can stand either of those separately, but not like this.

this

/thread

any game that looks like it was made in flash

im talking about shit like bastion for example

doesnt matter how well or if the art is handwritten or whatever, those weird flat shapes scrolling against each other is so fucking ugly i cant stand it, feels so cheap, feels like cardboard cutouts

Agreed, I never got into WoW cause the graphics looked so damn cartoony and "funny". Even tho I was actually looking forward to it when I was a lil shit reading about it in a magazine first in 2000.
With that I hated the graphics in starcraft 2, I still played it, but it just seems to have the same style.
Overwatch is a lil better, but its not my kinda game so whatever.

One of the reasons I quit GW2 was because of the graphics, no matter what direction you faced the lighting on your character would always come from the right.

Not really ugly, but just jarring.

FE4 had a lot of same face and men that I constantly mistook for women.

FXV had an uncanny look to it because they tried to blend fantasy, modern, and futuristic aesthetics into one.

Yeah what this user said. It was one of my favorite PS1 games until my brother went and destroyed most of my old games.

most blizzard games, the gameplay is bad too though.
I cant even enjoy overwatch porn for the most part.
I dont know what a blood elf is but I wish it were dead

Am I the only one that can't stand hex-based games? I can handle tiles just fine but something about the hex shape triggers my autism. It just doesn't look right to me.

Psychonauts and FF8 turned me off due to how they looked. I played a little bit of FF8 because I just wanted to see if it was any good. It was ok, but it played a lot like FF7 and I was fatigued from FF7 at the time. I might give it another shot sometime. As for Psychonauts, I've heard good things but I've been to busy to play it.

I couldn't stand to look at Terraria long enough to know if I looked it or not.

The new Shantae game is super guilty of this. They overuse the 'squish' effect in flash for a lot of the animations, and I can't unsee it. It looks/feels/plays like a fancy flash game.

Any game that has a CRT filter. It hurts the eyes.

Factorio

Stopped reading there.

this
usually if gameplay is good i can ignore everything else altogether
with this game its not the case

It's the character design, isn't it?

Webm related. I just gave up when this happened.

Yes, it's fucking deformed.

That reminds me. The Bloodline Champions remake called Battlerite went full WoW shit.

Somebody doesn't like fun

The gameplay is just fine but the characters are ugly as sin. Can you even read?

You should have used the unofficial patch. Works perfectly with that.

I can read where neither you nor anyone said that in this thread, yeah

They are ugly, just like you. Nerd.

I was never going to play Dragon Age: Inquisition, but even if I was a retard, I still wouldn't have been able to play it because the way the hair looked made me nauseous enough to dry heave. It literally looked like all the people were wearing wigs made of sculpted, dyed shit. There was one character with a brown handlebar moustache that looked like he rolled up a turd and stuck it directly under his nose, and when he was on stream I almost threw up.

Ah. Is it worth it?

It's not like it's a huge time investment, the game is like five hours long
