Imageboards in general, such as ours, may naturally seem like rude and disgusting to people who aren't used to the culture.

This is because of the absence of the name. You may notice that there is no name associated with this post, it just says "anonymous".
This is to ensure that people will only care about the content of the posts that are made, not the background of the person. This is useful in keeping free speech free.

Many things that are said may also seem offending. Please understand that most of the time, the words stay only words, and people often don't mean what they say.
Often, people just say outrageous things to elicit a response from others or as an inside joke.

An example would be the advocacy of gulags. Although there are people who genuinely believe Stalin did nothing wrong, most people just say it as joke, or to pretend to be a stupid person to "bait" people to respond.

You can go a little further than that. The allure of anonymous discussion is for arguments to be judged upon their merits rather than the person making them. In addition it encourages people to truly speak their minds without fear of judgment from others. Often, this results in what appears at a surface level to be brazen incivility or an inability to have a serious discussion among all the tongue-in-cheek, ironic humor, but with enough lurking one can tease out the serious from jokes.
