Does anyone realize how fucking unacceptable this is? Two hundred fucking raiders at once. Five frames per second. It took two minutes for the game to even initiate the raid. I'm only on ROUGH, for fuck's sake. I've had to turn down the difficulty multiple times just to get THIS manageable.

Are there any mods which create a mod menu that allows you to edit the attributes of any of the storytellers? I know there are mods that add NEW storytellers, and maybe one of them has this, but for the love of fuck, I can't handle this anymore. Raids have to be limited in size, because eventually you just hit a C2D even on the easiest fucking setting with the easiest fucking storyteller. The game is 100% broken.

Game starts out ok, put up some buildings, learn about zones and various game mechanics, create refrigerated storage zone, etc.

Suddenly, Kalistra's ex-husband shows up and joins. He is a fat rancher named Ruiz. Eventually Kalistra breaks up with Byte to hop on Ruiz's dick again. Kalistra gets in constant fights with O'Brian. Ruiz can grow things but is otherwise a drag. A few other motly jokers show up including a old man who is a drug addicted, nudist, doctor.

Eventually rescue a escaped test subject named Larry from a couple raiders. Take the downed raider bitch captive (I think her name was Erisen). Strip Erisen naked and have Ruiz try to recruit her.

AND THEN ONE DAY!

Erisen makes the great escape. Ruiz runs away and cowers like a faggot while Erisen tools up at the armory that was conveniently located right outside her cell (a slight oversight on my part). She equips some frag grenades from a dead raider, proceeds to start chucking them everywhere. Byte the only person with any shooting ability and courage enters the room and blasts away at Erisen while dodging frags. Byte gets blow to smithereens, Erisen escapes the zone. So pissed that I crank up the random events and let the remaining colonists battle it out against a bug infestation.

Start a different colony.

Putting the resource bar into categories is a vanilla thing, its one of the buttons on the bottom right, the one on the left in the row of only 2

Pretty sure there's only a handful of things that determine the raid sizes: your pop, wealth, and time. Raid "size" isn't really quite right either because it's closer to a point value relating to the amount they have to spend on gear and soldiers. You can get some small raids of really well equipped bionic druggies around midgame instead of the usual hordes. Your wealth reflects how much you have to defend yourself with so it makes perfect sense to use it as a gauge for how much to throw at you. You're just so far beyond expected values the game isn't designed or optimised to scale that high. What the hell is your wealth, anyway?

The guy wanders into a settlement with an imouto, an onee-san, and a milf, and immediately decides that's not enough. I set a couple other animals to be tamed, like a boomrat or two for the neutroglycerin, but he completely ignored them in favour of collecting monster girls.
I think this playthrough will be about making the biggest, most complete harem I can for him.

Then her mother joined. Very young, petite and smart. But not fully stable. She went berserk and I arrested her. Then designated her as a comfort slave for the heck of it.
The big daughter immediately barges in and rapes her.
Turns out mommy is a masochist and perfectly happy to spend life in a superbly furnished prison cell, eating fine food and getting raped by every girl in the colony and her two-dicked daughter.

Bare minimum would be less arbitrary surgery, prepare carefully, and expanded prosthetics and organ engineering. You might not need to use prepare carefully for anything other than to save you clicking reroll on your colonist choices but the other two are very important quality of life things. I've heard good things about psychology but haven't ever really tried it myself.
There are shitloads out there though. Most of them are on the game's forum but if you've played around in vanilla enough before taking a look through you should have an idea of what you want to add to it and makes searching much easier.

The devs don't seem pozzed. There's some cancerous Kickstarter stories that you can't remove cause they're hidden in the DLLs but otherwise no drama or politics

As far as I know the dev has tended to resist the cancer.
I do know the usual suspects (Polygon et al) wrote a bunch of attack articles on the bigoted misogynistic romance system (female pawns go for older males and males go for younger females, and females have less rigid sexualities than males), and I'm pretty sure he stood his ground on it.

Good start. What's with the ground? Are those puddles of water?
Also that massive patch of fertile ground to the right of your base is screaming for corn and healroot crops.
Electronics can reach 7 tiles to a power cable. You don't need to make one right the way to the lights.
Also dumping stockpiles for your chunks if you want them to actually haul them.

in winter connect that geyser to your base to get a ton of free heating.

deconstruct ruins and remove floors you start a map with to remake them into walls you actually need.

make a point of getting fire walls on the outside your base, made from stone to protect from the inevitable firestorm coming your way.

Put a roof on those batteries, even if you don't completely wall them off, to keep them dry.
If you've got sunlamps you should probably wall and roof those fields too. Do that, keep them warm, and they'll still keep growing in the winter.

there have been improvements. But i'm gonna throw another suggestion, and that is that not every single room needs a heater. You'd easily make due with about 5 just so long as they're evenly spaced and rooms have ventilation. And it saves a lot of power.

So, how do you make a proper killroom or any good defense against invasions? I saw some damn invaders mining the mountaint I was hiding just before finding the wall, so they start attacking it.

This setup is the most efficient tiling.
Also, I recommend rice over potatoes. Potatoes are good for poor soil or even gravel, since rice is sensitive to soil fertility and doesn't grow well there, but in rich soil or hydroponics that's not an issue and rice is objectively better.
In hydroponics and with proper temperature control, rice gets a 230% growth rate, versus potatoes at ~150%. Taking into account yield size, that means you harvest an average of 3.8 potatoes per plant per day, versus at least 4.4 rice (probably more, not sure of rice base growth time).
An alternative worth considering is strawberries, which are also quite sensitive to fertility, but aren't as efficient as rice. But rice needs to be cooked into meals to avoid a mood malus, while berries don't, so if you find yourself bottlenecking on manpower instead of raw production (which is likely in smaller colonies) then berries may be a better option.

How is raid frequency determined? Is it just the storyteller throwing them at you when they think you need to be attacked, or are there more in-depth calculations like faction opinions and geography?
An idea I've been considering has been to make my colony very close to a friendly faction, then once I'm well-established to attack a caravan of theirs and turn them hostile. If I'm only a tile or two away, my hope is that raids would be relatively frequent, allowing for more efficient slaving.

i've definitely sunk at least a hundred hours into it, but i don't think it's worth that much money. i've played more of mount and blade and i only bought that for like 2-4$

If you do buy, do so from the dev's site instead of the Steam store. You get a Steam key anyway, but that way you also get the DRM free version, don't have to give money through Valve, and often pay a lower price.

I'd personally say worth a purchase. It's early access so that's obviously subject to personal taste, but in my opinion the game is complete enough that I'm satisfied buying it as-is and not based on promises of what it might become. And since I use the DRM-free version I don't have to worry about Steam insisting on an update so I can at least keep the current version if development somehow goes a direction I dislike.
As usual, if in doubt pirate before buying; at the very least it's worth a download.

A wall to hold up the roof and a heater. Anything else you want in the other two. Maybe fermenting barrels?
If you have fertile soil where you're planning on building your hydroponics I'd recommend not even bothering with the hydros and just plant straight into the ground with walls+roof+heater+sunlamp set up as per usual. If the power goes out (like with solar flares) plants in the hydroponics start dying but in soil they don't, even if the sun lamp is off, assuming the temperature doesn't get too low. Pic related is my staple for year-round growing. The thermal vent puts out a lot of heat and keeps things warm too.

I find you really have to micro combat, the ai is terrible in that regard.

There are a bunch of presets. I can't tell if they're the creative rewards characters from backers or if the dev just made a shittonne and called it random.

was great until a thrumbo revenged the first taming attempt, 'tore apart' my lab, downed the other lab and 3/4 colonists [no turret killbox lyf], bitch panther ran away (because tamer/owner was downed) and bled to death in bed.
the last colonist was nonviolent, so i led the thrumbo into a room, circled around a table and locked it in there
was a good idea until i realized mr.non violent was a shit doctor and the 3 downed colonists, dog and panther were goners plus the thrumbo

Is there a limit to how many mods you can install?
Every time I try to activate a new mod, I get an "index out of range" error when I try to load my saves. If I deactivate an installed mod and replace it with a new one, then I can load the save, assuming the removal doesn't cause normal errors. I've shuffled around several different mods and as far as I can tell the only thing consistent about the errors is the number of active mods, regardless of which mods are actually installed.

There isn't any way of protecting against them. Pretty sure it's only wild berries and devilstrand that aren't affected by blight. There's probably a mod out there but I don't know of it.

All those hydroponics could fit under one sunlamp with room to spare. Colonists can walk on them; you don't need to leave aisles.
Sunlamps use 1600W while hydroponics use 70W each. You've got 20 hydroponics and 2 lamps for a total of 4600W, when pic related has higher production for only 3280W.

Build your outer walls out of stone instead of steel so they don't burn. You can put low things in front of your windmills like solar panels and crops.build your crop-houses over fertile ground so you can get that growth bonus year round. Rough stone walls have -2 beauty and so do rough stone floors. Having really nice bedrooms and dining rooms will give lasting bonuses to mood. Don't bother using graves for anyone that isn't a colonist. Just make a corpse freezer and let your dogs eat them. Corpse freezers allow you to store corpses in one tile rather than two and don't stay there forever. Also holy shit do not build graves over fertile ground. That's such a waste.

The bases look good though. I really like the look of metal walls but jesus they're shit stat-wise.

Another tip that I have found to be really useful when you have shitloads of people: make stockpiles of the materials needed right next to the place the crafter is going to stand and change in the options to make them just drop their things when they're completed. If the stockpile isn't at their feet also, someone who hauls will come and deliver new materials and take away the finished ones without the crafter having to be interrupted by moving around to go fetch things. In yours they'll have to walk through the dining room and brewery just to get new components. That's a lot of time spent not making things.

Build walls in stone. Build initial structures in wood til you get stonecutting going, but wooden walls can make circuitry failure fires very dangerous and hard to put out, t. guy whose workshop walls went up halfway through replacing and took all of my colonists firefighting the entire day + several burn scars and burnt workbenches to extinguish.
Wooden doors are still fine as they have the fastest opening speed (both vanilla and autodoors) and are infrequent enough to be negligible in a fire. Stone doors open extremely slowly.

Wood is 100% flammability, metal 20%, plasteel 10%, steel/jade/uranium 0%.
Don't build walls of steel. Steel is too valuable and steel's structural stats are trash.
