I went in expecting furry homestuck/undertale cringe. But really its mostly just an early 2000's "i miss the 90's and my freedom" indie movie style thing.
The biggest problems it has are its constant attempts at "whedonesque" quirky dialogue which rarely works and the fact that part 4 feels like its setting up the second half of the game but just falls apart like they ran out of budget.

Its not some grand autismal nightmare like undertale, its just an inoffensive game with some okay ideas that falls apart by the end.

From what I understand about the game I have a feeling this is a coming of age type story contained in a very weak game. The story and character study is fine and all but gameplay sucks. Except catcher in the rye with an eldritch abomination that creates an obvious political message with the cult worshiping him. Honestly I think the imagery of anthropomorphic animals honestly is just there for cosmetic reasons. Probably worth it for the "games are art" crowd but not to worth it for the regular person.

There's a new social commentary that originated on this board after tumblrtale threads came and went. It deals with how anything remotely emotional in media, such as certain video games, are used to force a narrative.
In other words, people are using video games as a way to control the masses by creating a false argument. The idea that the characters and world in the video game don't exist is supposed to stop people from taking too much to heart; however, in Undertale– the world was presented as a separate entity. Game mechanics became world phenomena, and there were some characters that outright broke the fourth wall to speak to the player. Some of them even begged for mercy from the player themselves.
This led to people becoming attached (quite a few becoming overly attached) to the characters as though they were in some way real. Evidence of this is posted every time the

poster comes to visit a thread even mentioning it in passing. Himself also being evidence of emotional attachment. Hate is an emotion.
This leads to the correct assumption that the game is attempting to push ideals on the player through emotional manipulation. The problem is the assumption can then be applied to anything that illicits emotional response. The commentary that now exists due to the Undertale threads forces one to apply that assumption.
Earthbound was a manipulative MK-Ultra experiment designed to make the populace love their friends.
Dr. Strangelove was fake-news to instill doubt in humanity's ability to play God.
Romeo and Juliet was a false-flag that attempted to undermine society's disdain for unwed lovers.
Catch-22 was a conspiracy theory created to manipulate millitary law into something that makes sense.
And so on.
It isn't wrong.
But it also doesn't make you into a sheeple for experiencing the emotion you were meant to experience. Be glad you can still feel anything at all, to have any sort of motivation or reason for anything; because out there, there are people that are truly alone.

The game does illict emotions, but these are unrelated to the central theme and main plot of the game. It made me feel comfy dispite knowing this game was sjw garbage. However, emotional maniplulation has to have a point.
If your character feels betrayed, you should make the player feel betrayed. That's how it should work.
This game has no segments that make you identify with the character, since the mysteries aren't mysterious enough and there's not enough conveyance to make you project to your character. You're questioning her motives at every step, not understanding her logic or decisions.

The game didn't emotionally manipulate, it emotionally comforts you. It lulls you into thinking "well a game with this much comfy has to have SOMETHING to it", but it doesn't.
The most emotionally "manipluating" parts are the sections with your family and outside of main plot points like with the Roof Rat. It lulls you into playing the game more, surely there's something to this game, yes?
When tumblrtale emotionally manipluated you, it had good reason to. It was discussing the central backstory to Asriel, the reason the way things were the way they were. When Bastion "emotionally" manipluated you, it did so very well, with you throwing down your weapon and carrying a traitor back to safety, your enemies realizing what you are doing and ceasing to attack you. When this game "emotionally" manipulates you, it does so to show nothing.
