Well It's not based on the Company of Heroes faction, I choose that name since I am not very creative when it comes to thinking up new names and during my older development I added a lot of crazyish tanks such as a flamethrower tank with 3 weapons; Flamethrower, Incendiary/Flameball shell, Incendiary Bullets. Plasma Tank with similar armament as what the flamethrower tank, Nuclear M1Ax Abrams and so on.

Oh yeah and speaking of units first I want to finish the ground combat before I move on the Air/Sea part, they will definitely play a role in the future but the next one will be the Air stuff since it can be built anywhere where the Sea units are well limited to water area only for obvious reasons.

Oh boy,my task will be much easier if I can use a 2nd diffuse texture so I can use it for turrets or so. Anyway as I wrote before I will later salvage parts from other mods anyway since I can't program for shit.

I have seen on the RTS thread that most of the anons where bothered with poor/weak AI and seems to rather prefer Singleplayer stuff more then the Multiplayer part if I am not mistaken. Right now RAI should work with my mod but RAI is not maintained anymore and it is easy to beat it since it doesn't do any advanced stuff, luckily alternatives exist such as CRAIG which Spring:1944 uses and Metal Faction has a custom AI too that I could take so I am not completely lost on that one.

What language and platform? You really have to use an engine or a library of some sort, unless you're doing all your rendering in software and blitting it to your framebuffer directly, and I doubt you're going to implement all your rendering routines from scratch.

Honestly if you can achieve your original goal of making the alien faction really synchronize with the AI it would be killer; although, yeah, AI is definitely one of the biggest factors for an RTS game/mod being top tier.

Depending on how you plan to texture this, it makes sense to either make them two objects or two separate meshes within one object. You have to decide what works best for you.

Yeah I need to play Spring:1944, Metal Faction and other such mods a bit and observe how those AI's behave and then build a faction around those styles. If I recall it correctly Metal Faction AI plays a bit more tactically so it might suit for a Alien race that is rather intelligent and has thus more skirmish units and other support units. I don't remember anymore how Spring: 1944 faction behaves nowadays.

For the aliens styles I know where to look from, Serious Sam/Doom has those bio-mechanoids things (Spider master demon, Arachnotron, Laser/Rocket biomechanoid), Tridonis, Dark-Colony and the X-Com series have those alien stuff as well, so I can use them as inspiration and of course the Alien race should look as it's name implies alien and not a reskinned human, honestly the Nali alien from Unreal 1 looks more alien then that garbage Autism Effect: Andromeda is.

I had the same exact issue when I initially started.
I made a few bases, and finally settled on the one you're seeing there; it really helps to have a silhouette tbh.
I'm going with the same style as deadbolt for characters (same base, just different palettes/animations).
Took awhile to get the proportions right, and to finally settle on "just enough details"; as I'm use to doing concept art for a 3D detailed game setting so it was really tough.

I was working on a 3D game for a few years, and decided to go with something smaller scale; that's more manageable for a 1MA (this was very tough to do, but the 3D project was taking too long, as was too stressful).
So atm just learning pixel art, and learning enough to be able to implement my combat mechanics w/animations for a single character (proof of theory really).

I'm trying to give more shape to the overall identity of my game - and aesthetic as well. Something to give it more personality, and make it more edgy and sexually charged

Thus far, I've really only come up with a single important decision:

Newspawns have shackle-style collars fitted loosely around their necks. Removal takes , and having it on gives . The purpose of that is to kill off people's tendency to kill themselves to gain health, regain stats, remove debuffs, and also serves to remove spawnscumming that is so fucking frustrating in Rust and similar games.

It has an added bonus of looking sexy on naked characters.

Character's life isn't worth much if you can just respawn and pick your inventory stuff up. Basically what I'm taking away is the ability to remove debuffs from yourself for free.

In Minecraft, Rust, and similar games it's always been the primary method for replenishing hunger before Minecraft added XP. In Rust, there's still no punishment for it - and everyone still types "kill" in console to respawn in their bed with 1/4 hunger bar full.

One theme in particular I've been toying with is falling in love with a sex slave. Finally seeing yourself as a disgusting creature when the gods shove the divine in your face. After what you've done, could they, the slave, ever love you? Could you live with yourself? Would the doubt, never knowing if they're lying in such a world, drive you mad?

There are also the consequences of defecting from degenerate comrades, like being thrown in a rape dungeon. They already hold their dindu rape dungeon over our heads everyday. Would you defect for somebody you love? Obviously not your family in such a world, but some random person. It's complicated.

They did ok creating a feely connection in Deadly Premonition, but it took the length of the game to do it. I wonder if such a thing could be condensed to create actual feely motive for a player.

I'd just make the living worthwhile. Like there's always something to get by going just a little further. Games like Diablo and No Man's Sky thrive on this very tight cycle, and they have random maps with little story content; I believe your game is in a similar boat. I'd get them into a very quick reward cycle as quickly as possible, not a cycle of pain and fear.

Like maybe dash through shitty danger area to more fertile area for gathering. Another dash to other supplies. Fucking africans roaming, raping, and eating everything in their path. Another dash to safety, or something. I don't know how much space you've got to work with.

The point is the player should be competitive and never really punished. Maybe a checkpoint system or something. And a map/scouting/note system. Get them engaged in the reward cycle.

Yeah, it is a per-object outline shader, I wanted to recreate something similar to what I had in the prev pic. I'm using it with a glow shader for the textures (depending on the model) so the texture doesn't get affected by the lightning on the scene.

To get closer to your old pic, you could try looking into normal based edge detection and/or depth based edge detection. I'm trying to get all three of those working together nicely, but dealing with a lot of small problems.

Ideally (in my own workflow at least), I make it so there's nothing concave, everything is convex, so that I can easily make box or near-box collisions for them. Sometimes I do export multiple objects in one mesh, especially if they require vastly differing materials, as long as they can form a single cohesive collision mesh.

Believe it or not but some devs on Patreon worry that their income can be pulled out from under them any time, and would rather have stable storefronts for a rainy day income… basically if you have a back catalog like a decent indie dev, you can survive on residual sales without having to pretend like you're making progress every month.

Some games are made for Patreon, while others are made to be finished and put on Steam. Mine is the latter.

The top right is just for the shirts. I can't decide if it's worth having separate graphics for male and female or not. I designed the female torso to basically be a smaller male that still fits the same proportions so clothes could be unisex. Fat and children need their own though.

I think I will cut the female stuff. Note that there's still going to be gender specific underwear though, this is just for the modular shirt design

I'm doing webassembly, so that stuff doesn't really apply. I could do it with websockets though, but am avoiding it. Still Minecraft and Runescape did it in Java somehow.

Java isn't part of the browser, it can do a lot of things you can't without it.

Webassembly is experimental so good luck with that.

Decremental game where it's snowing and you're snowed in, and you have to click to remove snow. Removed snow works as currency to buy shovelers, salt throwers, snow trucks etc. to remove it faster, and when you get rid of all the snow you win.

I know Godot works on BSD, but I'm not clear on whether it can actually export to it. There doesn't seem to be a BSD export template.

i haven't decided on the color for the base model, and the dark yellow/dark red was easy to make look nice.
I tried doing a white'ish base model but that's really hard to make look nice without a lot of anti-aliasing which would be difficult to animate without a lot of touch ups everytime

It's not a linux template, it's a template for X. Which just happens to be a very common window system that both Linux and BSD use.

That's my point. When exporting, it says "Linux X11" with a pinguin logo next to it. But as you said, it's not a Linux-only template. Hence, confusion.

Left click object goes to left hand, right click to right hand, left click on right hand object exchanges it with the left hand slot, left click on left hand object tries to put it back into inventory.

To be fair, for most people (I would think) would be used to Left Mouse = Primary Fire and Right Mouse = Secondary Fire. Since most people are right-handed then, the assumption is going to be that any weapon in the right hand is the Primary one. It does throw things off, though, once you start duel wielding or switching to holding the main weapon in the left hand. While yeah sure it's unintuitive when you think about it, but I can see where it got its start.


Do what KoTOR did. Select spot to be filled, select item from menu. Or what Dark Souls did, if I remember right, where its pretty much the same but you fill up more slots in those spots with potential items to be carried, and then press a certain button to cycle through those slots while playing.

That's pretty good. I like the variations in tone and arrangement, not so much the riff or melody but that's a matter of taste. I think without the variations it would have felt too repetitive. look if you've got attention problems, try to use that to your advantage. For example, I'm sure there are various areas you'd like to learn or practice in. So besides modelling, you probably also are interested in animation and texture making. So instead of trying to practice modelling for two hours and letting your attention/focus problems get in the way, divide up your time between those three things and go back and forth with practicing each thing. That way you can focus on each thing and still be efficient with your time. Also try not to use Holla Forums during this time as you'll just get sidetracked.

This is the rifle enemies are going to be using and it will be in a lot of different places. If there's a marksmen in the level they'll have this rifle. The player can pick it of up and use it or course, but it's not supposed to be a personalized gun.

If you aren't picky you can just use the loop. Anyway, here's how to make a song loop, presented in way too much detail.
Steps 1-24, listen to the file as often as you can, especially the point at which it loops.
1. Download the file
2. Open file in audacity something, then select about 5 seconds past where you want the loop to happen.
3. Delete that
4. Duplicate the track
5. Move it so that the start is about where you want the end to be. If there is a similar section go to that part, if not try to pick a somewhat quite part.
6. Zoom in to do the fine detail work
7. Remove everything past the point where you want the loop to end.
8. Listen to it and realize it's shit
9. Move the bottom track to a new place and select everything past where you want the end
10. Delete that
11. Select the ending part and use a crossfade out on it.The beginning of the loop is silent, but if it wasn't you would want to use a crossfade in to avoid popping.
12. Duplicate the end and move it to a new track
13. Remove the ending part from the original top track.
14. Select the top track
15. Duplicate it
16. Remove the middle, longer track
17. Listen to it and admire your work
18. Remove the bottom two tracks and export the audio, if you save it wont give you a music file, just a project file. This will be the part that is played at the start.
19. Export as flac for the placebo effect and to pad the size of your game
20. Enter in important information.
21. Ctrl+z your bottom two tracks back
22. Remove the top track and move the bottom two tracks to the beginning
23. When you export you will get this warning, this is ok, it's what we want. This will be the loop. It just so happens it loops at the beginning, but it doesn't have to be this way and usually isn't this way.
24. Enter in important information, this time try to piss off genre purists.

Your done.

With shaders how can I draw one texture over another like a decal, randomly onto an object.

Like when a blood appears on a wall or an explosion mark appears on the ground in a game, how is that done?

AFAIK decals are usually done by placing an additional mesh where you need them. So you'd place a correctly scaled quad with your decal texture on the ground/walls/whatever. Getting decals onto complex surfaces is a more involved process, as it requires you to calculate a mesh for your decal that fits the ground. Pic related shows one approach.

eh sorry wasnt trying to be cryptic, i mean im still learning too, but in my experience its not about drawing circle 10.000 times, i think drawing and modelling in general shares the same concept really, you just have to feel the shape and look at a lot of references, i usually can open up to 5 different references for a pose. So browse a lot of different arts, pose, try to feel them and finally incorporate it into your drawing.

I dunno. On some level, I consider you all to be friends on a philosophical level, even though I've never met, and probably never will meet, any of you.

re-creating the HLD sprites, but with slight recolors.
i like this style, but not sure yet on what I'll go with…

user having a simple stylized style that isn't trying to be perfect art is fine, but without the fundamentals you get from practicing figure drawing and such you're going to find yourself unable to create a simple stylized figure that appeals to people unless you resort to either the smallest of pixel styles, or low poly 3d models(the 3d doing the job of consistency for you).

There's nothing wrong with exaggeration but a number of artists think they can just throw random exaggerations down on the paper and it'll be fine because "it's my style" but the exaggerated simple stylized art people claim to want to be like knew how to figure draw that allowed them to create consistent anatomy for their simplified style and consistent perspective. Otherwise you will have perspective constantly shifting and arms randomly changing lengths and facing the wrong directions. It's not the sort of thing people look at and go "wow what a unique style" it's the kind of thing people tend to look at and go "This person doesn't know how to draw" But you do what you think will work best for you user.

Over the past year I've tried to move away from just like make game and instead spent more time on planning features out and designing systems and always results - for me at least - in killing my momentum and enthusiasm. It seems like I just work better when I smashing features out and then tidy up later. I'm not used to being daunted by a long list of features but on the flip side I know having no design doc to adhere to can be a slippery slope. Anyone have insight?

i did learn the fundamentals, but i can only learn effectively if i apply it to actual work i care about. If i approach it like in academic way, well..according to past experience, it will go very very slowly and just ineffective. Since i'm actually planning to make game dev as a job, i'm really planning to make my development time as short as possible, so i took every shorcuts that possible, time is really really important for me.

humm, to my brain it makes it look cleaner, and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
For actually drawing it, it's really nice for shading, and doing details; so I'm definitely going to stick with that part.
It'll probably look cleaner when I actually do aliasing n such, as for the HLD style sprites I posted conforms to their style (gradient shading); as "working within limits" is really the TL;DR of the pixel art style.

I don't like the 1 pixel limbs either, I really like the RoR/deadbolt, and glauber kotaki style; so I will go with slightly more detailed limbs so u can see the calves/feet (one's brain fills in the rest really).

I'll most likely do additional details when it comes to limbs, but anymore details for the rest and it becomes a huge pain to animate (1MA here, not a studio with dedicated animator(s) heh).
Really all my decisions are driven in the direction that avoids, or mitigates feature creep due to said strain on resources.

imo just have the core idea, and core mechanics written down.
implement those, make sure it's fun, and later work on extra shit.
As otherwise you may fall prey to feature creep, like I did, and that's no fun to realize; after a few years of repeatedly falling prey to that beast.

Looking at the fundamentals and learning them is one thing, and not to attack you but you still have some practice to go before you''ve become competent at them. That said if you're practicing regularly that's good, keep it up. And it's understandable to want to work on projects rather than do nothing but practice for 10 years as long as you do both.

I almost never get sick either, less than once every two months. There's some kind of throat cold or strep going around, and I think I got it after everyone else did. Granted, I think I'm mostly over it, but I felt kind of awful last night / this morning.

lucky u, I've got a lung infection I'm still getting over, not fun, very painful, and to top it off I still have2 work bcs bills suck I get a day off soon though

most annoying thing, its not dangerous but it makes you so uncomfortable that you cant focus on anything else. I usually drink water like crazy whenever im having the symptom of it, and just sleep a lot try to sweat everything out.

No, these models are from Lost Planet.

I'm trying to do what the guy who made the Monster Hunter mod for Ark did, and bring the Vital Suits into Ark: Survival Evolved.

It is now looking like my friend is going to flake on me, or at least he never replies when I ask him about going forward with the project, so I may need to find someone else.

I figured out a program that can open and edit the .c4d files, and it also allows me to export them as .obj and other formats so they can be used in more common software.

The Vital Suit models do not come with weapons on them as I expected, so I will either need to find a way to attach the guns to the VS in game and have them fire when you left or right click, or just have the VSs spawn with pre-set weapon loadouts.

hey you could actually make it a gameplay. why not let the user dress up their employee whatever they want, as nazi or gommie or whatever, and it will attract customers that have the same point of view. Tumblr will praises you for letting them make a sjw store, 4chon will praises you for making nazi store. Win win. Also a relationship meter with these type of people, relationship with nazi people, the degenerate and so on, and putting certain banner or ad on shop will increase or decrease their relationship meter, which in turn will affect how often these type of people will come to your store.

I had a rough idea of this, actually. The idea was that each character would have a religion, race, and ethnicity, and then their personality would just determine the weighting towards each factor, so that when they look at a product, they'd determine what is most desireable for them. Like, someone with Islam as their religion would strongly gravitate away from products that were not halal, or whatever.

At one point, I was actually researching the population breakdown by race and religion per US county, based on census data, but there's just so much I need a good plan and can't just do it in one sitting. There's fucking 3,144 counties.

Just pick one region, or hell just a district, and emulate that.

A couple several suggestions: Emergen-C (3000mg of Vitamin C in somewhat tasty fizzy orange mix package); Throat Coat herbal tea; really any herbal tea for that matter, there's plenty to choose from that help with relieving symptoms and relaxing mind/body at just about any supermarket; Honey Lemon Chamomile tea is also pretty good and it helps you fall asleep which you probably need; also, Vitamin E really helps your immune system and they're usually in tiny-ass gels that are easy to swallow; and if you don't want to feel like crap in general, try St. John's Wart, you can take it as a pill or break it apart and drink it as tea.

I don't have to necessarily go to the county level, of course, but that would be my ideal; I can always just keep it to the state level and use their metrics instead.

Like if Indiana has 86% whites and 9% blacks, then I can use those as weights when making random shoppers. (The only potential issue is if I have repeat visitors and have to save their data; it could bloat the save considerably, but just making random incidental people is no people)

I can also look at historical populations to see how populated a state was per decade, use this to determine density, which could determine how often new shoppers appear, etc.

well theres always an option to go full fantasy, you dont have to make actual representation of these various groups but just making something as a thinly veiled reference to them. And then just have these 5 main group populate your game, and at the start all of them have equal size, and as time passes their number will increase or decrease depending on your action.

You could instead make it so that each generated person has a binary flag that could be set, given a small chance or thru an algorithm, that states whether that customer claims to be a Repeat Customer. Or alternatively, have a limited array of preset size that saves the last R repeat customers, doing so by adding that customer's data to the list if their RepCust flag got set to TRUE during their visit. This way the amount of data bloat can be modified and limited during testing to determine what feels best (or even add it in the options menu, so toasters dont get impacted as much).

Any OpenGL fags know if glMapBuffer is worth using? I have a lot of dynamic models that can also be static, so I was thinking of just pulling them off the model list buffer, computing their transforms on the CPU, then pushing them onto the static buffer. Also shrinking the static buffer by pulling it on the CPU and cutting out part of it if static geometry gets deleted somehow.
