Divisive Games

Post games that people will either hate or love, no middle ground. Some people like Sonic 3's focus on exploration and story while others like me hate it for slowing down the gameplay with oversized levels and various level gimmicks. Sonic 2 is best Sonic btw.

What? S3&K best sonic ever made.
What the fuck are complains are these? Later Sonic 2 levels are just as big and gimmicky as Sonic 3 levels.

Talking about divisive games, i guess oblivion fits great into that.

Marble Garden and the Casino/Carnival zones are some zones that definitely took too long imo. One could easily spend 7-9 minutes in those stages. On the other hand, Oil Ocean, Wing Fortress and even Metropolis zone can be completed in 3-5 minutes.

Oh, now I'm starting to get it. This is the "Post an extremely popular game you like, yet makes you feel like a martyr for no apparent reason" thread.

Obligatory

I've never played it

Most people that aren't normalfags just reiterating Sonic 2 for being an "iconic game" (along with Sonic CD) will say Sonic 3&K is the best game in the franchise.

Please don't tell me you got stuck here.

forgot pic

Also sage because shit thread.

The fuck am I reading. I haven't played the game (but I will after I beat Sonic 2) but this sounds retarded and I doubt it's true.

...

Nigger, I was 3 and I figured out how this shit worked. Are people memeing or just retarded

This shit took me an hour as a kid, with jumping.

Few years ago I decided to replay and figured out you don't really need to jump. It amazed me that I ever did it otherwise.

Sonic 2 was only great up to Mystic Cave, after that the game is down hill from Oil Ocean.

How did anyone get stuck here? If you wanted to go up or down why wouldn't you at least try pressing up or down?

Sonic 3&K have "cutscenes" that take 5-10 seconds to play out and the level transitions show Sonic actually getting into the next zone instead of just fading to black. That's it. OP is a faggot as always.

This was a shitty thinly veiled unpopular opinions reddit thread so I'm declaring this as a Sonic general. Who's looking forward to Mania?

It isn't immediately obvious that pressing up and down works, there's an obstacle earlier in the game where you have to jump to make it work, and jumping on the cylinder makes it very obviously go up and down. It's very poorly designed overall.

Only if Black Sonic is on it, he's my favorite character (pre-ShTH)

I didn't love it, but I liked it. Kinda tedious at times but it got to me. The finale was cool.

Picture not related.

This, personally I loved it.

Hello Holla Forums

ShtH is the game that made him stop being the edgy faggot that everyone makes fun of. Only people who never actually played it don't realize this.

Nigger, i got an A rank on nearly every stage, the game is edgy as fuck. What are you on about?

The plot is literally about Shadow learning not to be an emo faggot anymore, and this character development then carries over into Sonic '06.

Also, all A Ranks? I hear you unlock a cool Super Hard Mode that has you play every level in a single story mode, but I've never had the patience to actually try to unlock that shit.

You and everyone else who parrots this meme need to >>>/ovens/ for being so casual

Niggers Sonic only requires using the d-pad and one button input. At 7 years old it took me all of 10 minutes through trial and error to make the cylinders work. Kill yourselves.

All games were divisive I thought.

You best be joking, nigger.

But but but it's not arcade driving garbage! BUT!

I have a love/hate relationship with it

Definitely a lot better than GTA5. Online wasn't full of pay2win bullshit either.

I really dislike Sonic's sprite in Sonic 3, he looks like an inflated baloon, why didn't they use Sonic 2 style instead?

we all do

I think he means the true ending of the game.

Basically the ending is him deciding he's never going to do all the ridiculous edgy shit he did in the game ever again.

Nigga if you think you can't go fast in sonic 3 you're just shit at sonic games.
Same game design as all the rest
High path is fastest

CAN I TALK ABOUT A REAL PROBLEM THOUGH, IT'S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE TO ENJOY sanic GAMES WHEN YOUR MUSCLE MEMORY CLICKS ON AND YOU BREEZE THROUGH EVERYTHING

You can't?

haha, do you think sonic gets embarrassed when he gets blown up

just asking, haha

Technology.
Driving, when you get used to it.
Multiplayer freeroam with actual NPCs for the first time.
Little Jacob.
Shooting was a step up.
Police behaviour was an improvement.
Some characters were, by GTA standards, well written.
TLaD's story.
The whole interlinked plot thing was interesting.

Vehicles all feel the same, we can have variety and non-arcadey driving (bikes were improved with TLaD).
Missions scripted out the ass, normally you can't catch cars early during a chase.
Graphically poor, has the muddyness of console games at the time.
Unforgivably terrible performance in the PC port.
GFWL + P2P multiplayer: fun fact, higher framerates = your car going faster in multiplayer racing.
Items popping-in in front of you while you drive in all versions of the game.
City was bland and repetitive compared to previous games. 'Realism' is not fun.
Whiny main character.
Meh tier story, they added betrayals in at random but they felt somewhat forced as did the 'moral choice' sections.
Friend missions.
Gay Tony turned up the silly to almost Saints Row 2 levels as a reaction to people complaining about IV being to serious. This was worse.
Radio tracks were mostly shit.

Anything I'm missing?

At least it's not GTA V level of samey.

...

I figured it out to, but it is a poorly designed obstacle. The reason a lot of people have trouble with is that there is no animation that shows you imparting movement when you press up or down.

I agree with Oblivion. I love this game, its music, its generic fantasy setting. My favourite TES game.

You have shit-taste, son.

but user people have to actually love it for it to be divisive. SJW on tumblr trying to meme the "game" into popularity is just propaganda.

why can't you niggers come up with some OC for once? Why is it always habitually such low energy post?

Also MGSV TPP is the most underrated best MGS game ever made. Have you accepted your phantom pain today Holla Forums?

will never understand how people like this

It would have been the best if it was actually finished.

The only "divisive" Sonic game from the Genesis era is CD. Everything else is generally liked or disliked, with a few people leaning the other way.

That's still way too fucking long for how small and simple an obstacle it's supposed to be.

A few reasons. First, nothing else in it or any previous Sonic game has you use up and down to impart movement like that. Every other mechanic and gimmick in those games has you using movement and momentum in a believable way, which leads to the second reason. It doesn't make physical sense. Why would pressing up and down make it move? Up and down normally just make Sonic look up or duck down, and there's no visual indication you're suddenly in control of the barrel. Third, repeatedly jumping on it with the right timing works just well enough that it can appear that's the intended way to get past it, and the player just isn't doing it good enough. Basically, people who got stuck were people who didn't believe the game designers would put such a shitty, un-intuitive obstacle into the game.

Yes you can that's what all A ranks unlocks Expert mode. Super hard mode was the same thing in Sonic Heroes.

The pulleys in Mushroom Hill

...

...

That's not using up and down to impart movement.

Whatever, 5 or a gazillion minutes. Point is, it didn't take long and if you get stuck at Carnival Night you're a fucking casual who can't into basic ass trial and error in a game that uses one button and a d-pad. Kill yourself.

Go try it. This too.

Come'on Anons lets be honest with ourselves.

Sonic 2 is an amazing game. But 3 is better because of Micheal Jackson.

Nobody hates Sonic 3.

Sonic CD, on the other hand, is actually divisive. A lot of people love the solid mechanics, great art, fun levels, and creative music.
The time travel mechanic is an awesome idea. Unfortunately, actually time traveling is clunky, and you can easily end up fucked when you need to go to the past and can't find a post, or when you find one and don't know where you can build enough speed to travel. It's a game that isn't really very fun until you memorize the stages, and tends to be frustrating, confusing, and obtrusive on the first playthrough. My first playthrough, I ran out the clock at least once every couple levels just trying to find a signpost that would take me to the past.
I learned to enjoy Sonic CD, but it's pretty overrated, and the people who think it's the best Sonic game are up their own asses. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (or Sonic 3 Complete, if you're really a purist) is the best Sonic game.
I hope Sonic Mania can compare to Sonic 3. It looks pretty promising so far.

"Impart" movement. Up and down moves Sonic on those things, not the object itself.

Except it did. Ten minutes is a long ass time for what's supposed to be a small obstacle that takes a few seconds to get past in a platforming game about zooming through levels. You shouldn't time out on a level because you couldn't figure out one little mechanic that rarely appears in a level.

Who here played S3/&K on PC first?

my nigga

This is the definitive version since it uses MIDI music and you can set up a high-quality soundfont to make it sound even better than the original.

Not Sonic 3 but I played Sonic CD on this bad boy.
I'm little surprised pic popped up after just searching "packard bell windows 98"

Bullshit. 3 improved in every possible way and would have been a masterpiece if it didn't have to be split into into that and S&K.

I'll even claim S3&K being released complete as it was originally intended would have forced Nintendo to step up their game earlier with the sheer leap in quality and content as a sequel.

It looks just fine and great in fact, faggot.

Read my post again

I think your autism is getting in the way of understanding relative short lengths of time.

Glad to see another retard parroting the meme that Sonic is all about muh goin fast XD

And you shouldn't be playing video games because you fucking suck at them.

nope

Time to go back to grammar school.

short and sweet RPG, fun combat and neat music

This alone makes it completely retarded shit.

Yes, relative to the amount of time it's supposed to take to beat a Sonic level, ten minutes is long. If you misunderstand me, I'm not criticizing you for taking that long to figure it out, I'm criticizing the game design for causing you to take that long.
Sonic is designed like Mario in that you're generally supposed to have a constant forward momentum through the level. Some obstacles may slow you down or hold you for a few seconds, but the games aren't puzzle-platformers that expect you to take minutes for one small section of a level.
I'm not sure why I'm the one who sucks at video games when you're the one who took so long figuring out a single obstacle that you timed out on a level.

you can't use a ym2612 on PC, baby.

Why would I want to have that tincan sound?

this isn't a SNES thread

Are you implying that the shitty metallic FM sound of the Genesis was any better? Only a handful of games got it right.

Correct. But those that did were dozens times better than SNES.

you probably liked the "shitty metallic FM sound."
Don't lie.

I like that soundtrack and Time Trax but that's about it.

...

Let me reference my post for the second fucking time

>Whatever, 5 or a gazillion minutes
>5
>it didn't take long
I take it back, you're just illiterate. Even autists can read.

That's not the game's fault, that's you being complacent in expecting the games to be constantly similar. Oh poor poor baby, the mean old video game threw you a curve ball, he can't take 2 minutes to get past it. Someone get this faggot his bottle and strategy guide.

Because you seem to think the fucking cylinders that took most of us 3 minutes to get past are a travesty and ruin the game when they're a small annoyance. You sound like the fag who shut the game off when spent the full 10 minutes to get past them because you really are that casual.

what the MIDIs could have been, but weren't:

a lot of the tracks off the official OST CD have neat intros like this.

But you said you took ten minutes. Throwing out different numbers arbitrarily doesn't change that.
But it did. Saying that it didn't doesn't change the fact that it did. Ten minutes is a long time when it's all that you have to beat an act. Even five minutes is a long time, considering that's half the amount of time you're allotted to finish it.

I'm not exactly sure what your point even is. You keep throwing out random numbers of minutes that mean nothing, claim that even a "gazillion" of minutes wouldn't be a long time, and proceed to throw baseless accusations concerning my skill at the game, when the entire conversations is about your incompetency at overcoming the obstacle. Did something break in your brain? Are you getting defensive over your own skill when you were seven years old?

...

3&K isn't even a little bit divisive, you just can't stand any game that you personally consider below a 9/10, your standards are unbelievably retarded, you're the cancer

Okay do people not know that besides going fast Sonic also have the spin jump and gameplay that compliments this mechanic. Like when I first played the game as a kid, I didn't know about the go fast mechanic and got
hooked on the spin jump alone, even when I was going slow aka normal explorative platforming which the level designs complements on.

but it was "finished". It was finished along time ago. Kojima intentionally left the fan base hanging. That was the point all along. It was a huge "artistic" way of saying fuck you to the lore faggots and fanbois. Which is why its one of the best MGS game in my opinion also because the game mechanics for the most part are solid and its generally fun to play

shit wrong picture.

Only because of the fanbase.

If it took you more than a minute to figure that out, every single Special Ed student has full rights to call you a fucking retard.

Ghost difficulty, crank up spawns, and treat it like cyberpunk Serious Sam and you'll have a blast if you enjoy the horde shooter genre.

Anons meme about it being like Deus Ex, so then other anons go into the game with that mindset and fucking hate it. It's not like Deus Ex in anything but setting, it's a horde shooter with RPG-esque character progression and some story bits.

Good taste, fam.

Niggers, both of you.

True enough. My opinion on IV has softened over the years, originally I was very much against it in part due to the changes in driving. Something between IV and SA's style would be ideal (weighty cars but with variety).

As long as some essential instruments and capabilities are there, it really just depends on the composer.

Some chips are just too shitty to do anything listenable with, like the Master System/Game Gear, for example.

You do know that SEGA was aware of this so they released an FM chip for the Master System (that sadly was japan only) which was supported by several games like Phantasy Star and made the console sound a hundred times better, don't you? There's even a hackrom for the MS version of STH so it can support FM music. And several Master System games that were never released on Japan still supported this chip for some reason, you can use Genesis Plus GX to emulate it.

I didn't know that, actually. Wery interesting.

Every game that has this shit in it

Ill show you low energy post

This is one of the reasons why Demigod was the only piece of shit like this I could actually enjoy. Playing the exact same map with the exact same rules all day every day is pure madness to me.

Which only happens in the Last Story after putting up with those stupid aliens and the android subplot that was introduced in Heroes gets sidelined.

I did. First played R and 3D Blast that way too.

There's absolutely nothing that indicates you're supposed to solve it that way whatsoever. It makes you think you need to keep jumping on the worthless piece of shit that only appears that one time,

...

Wrong, those cylinders were sprinkled throughout the entire stage.

MORE LIKE TUMBLRTALE, AMIRITE?

It's actually fun, and the soundtrack is undeniably very good. Other than the gender-neutral shit grammar, it is a neat little game. Absolutely not the greatest game ever, that's ridiculous. But it's not bad at all.

I used to have the demo on my PC with only angel island. Think I played through those 2 acts hundreds of times before I figured out how to just emulate it.

10 years worth of mods later, I can finally stomach playing oblivion. Some of the work the mod autists have done is pretty good.

Unmodded oblivion, however, is a fucking mess. I could never understand why it was so popular.

In terms of having to get past it? Yes.

There is nothing that doesn't misrepresent to the player that they just have to jump on it.

It has a faux-retro soundtrack to compliment it's faux-retro artstyle. Same shit as all other pretentious indies, just done with some mild amount of competency.

Zero self awareness.

In a regular run of Shadow the Hedgehog you start at one level but every level has two or three missions, and you pick one to get a branching path, with a total of ten endings. Getting All A Ranks on every mission unlocks Expert Mode, where you play all the levels (not just 1/3 of them or whatever) arranged in a new order so it's all linear with a single mission in each level. Also it's harder.

I've always preferred the S3/S&K graphics because everything, not just the player characters, has much more dimension. It felt like it was approaching what Donkey Kong Country was doing.

This is why CD is good, it has things that encourage you to explore much more than the other games. Getting all of Eggman's machines in the past, and getting all the Metal Sonic Holograms, is a very different challenge than what you'd find in most Sonic games.

It's not sidelined. The game is largely about if Shadow is even the real Shadow or not. Like half the endings revolve around this, with a couple of them even leading him to the conclusion that he is a robot and not the original. But the real ending just has him realize that it doesn't matter, and he doesn't give a shit anymore.

The whole game is trying to do that faux retro shit that every other indieshit does. Don't kid yourself.

I don't see the need for them to have shoehorned the Black Arms into the games plot, that is. Maybe it's just me, but they should've shed more light on the Ark incident and was disappointed that they didn't touch the Biolizard and the Gizoid/Emerl from Sonic Battle apparently is non-canon. The non-true endings are unsatisfying as well and about half of them has Shadow ridiculously karate choppping Eggman to death following the Egg Dealer boss.

Emerl fits into the plot well enough, there's no reason to say it's non canon, but I also think it's safe to say that Sonic Team doesn't pay attention to games not made directly by themselves. Those spinoffs are largely ignored by them except when they bring over a character from them, and even then, they don't reference their stories from those games. Just look at what happened with Blaze once they used her in a main series game.

Shadow the Hedgehog is all about what happened on the ARK. There wasn't more that needed to be said about the Biolizard, it was just a failed prototype, but the game is basically all about justifying why Gerald would build Shadow if not to take over the world (Sonic Adventure 2 doesn't actually say why), and then goes on to explain the actual purposes of the ARK and even the Eclipse Cannon. Everything comes together pretty well.

I know people get mad about Shadow being edgy as fuck in some of the endings, but the idea of him karate chopping Eggman to death or shooting Sonic in the face is funny as fuck, and I don't give a fuck. That said, yeah, a couple endings are a bit too similar to each other, and a lot of the "last" bosses aren't actually that good. The Final Story is pretty good though, so that makes up for it a little.

Self explanatory

The only people who don't think it's at least good are mega casuals or idiots who are just completely taking the word of some idiot on youtube.

It sucked, deal with it.

I've never played it, I only know it becomes a 2D platformer instead of being an overhead view like the first. Is it worth my time, I need a good kick in the ass.

Absolutely worth your time, but go in to it knowing two things: 1, it's an NES game, do not expect anything more than that, and 2, it expects you to put in the effort to talk to townspeople to hear hints and clues and stuff. You know, real adventuring before the era of minimaps and floating waypoints.
Also, make sure to read or at least skim the manual first, as games back then put crucial information in there because there were no tutorials. The biggest problem most people have with the difficulty of Zelda II is that they don't fucking read the manual or speak to townspeople.

Yes, it's great. The combat is difficult but very fun and pretty fair once you get used to it. Some of the progression which is the main complaint of people. Just look it up if you really get stuck and don't know where to go on the overworld, where you need to go can have no or very few hints. Dungeons eventually also get complex enough that it's hard to just memorize their layout, you can decide what you want to do about that.

Thanks

Nigger how on a genesis controller

Pic related. Specifically, the difficulty.

Oblivion was xbox kid's first open world "sandbox" and first fantasy RPG game. It was also one of the first examples of modern hype machine of lies and unrealistic promises. Outside of that, Oblivion rode on coattails of earlier games when it came to PC player base.

Oblivion isn't even fucking divisive. Arena-DF-MW fans hate it because it was the final ruination of the classic series, and newer fans hate it because it's a shittier version of Skyrim.

This is hard? I would have remembered this part if it was hard.

It's better than V, but then that's not fucking hard. As to it being any good in another matter, the GTA3-associated games are hard to follow up though.

There's OPL emulation and soundfonts with OPL/OPN samples, so it is as available as you want it.

It's really more of a test to see if you're too stupid to learn how to parry

People who played it later could easily just look it up on the internet, or may have already heard about it from other people complaining about it. If you were a kid just trying to enjoy Sonic in 1994, there were pretty much no clues that this one obstacle made your controls different than they are at every other point in the series.

Sonic CD is best.
NTSC OST is best too.

I also prefer the NTSC OST due to growing up with it.

only way you could improve over the yamaha soundchip would be using actual top end yamaha fm synths from the 80s like a dx1 or tx816
